OOC Discussion
Re: OOC Discussion
Are magic users permitted to memorize multiple instances of a single spell? (e.g. Dancing lights, shield, shield, shocking grasp?)
Re: OOC Discussion
Two new topics for discussion as Stirling rolls up a character:
(1) The current party composition is interesting. A C_ elf magic user, a N half-elf druid, a CN dark elf cleric, a NG dwarf thief, and a LG human paladin. How did this mixed group end up adventuring together? Why are a druid, a CN cleric, and a paladin working together?
(2) You might want to look at your equipment lists and remove some redundancies. For example, I count about 250' of rope all together.

Re: OOC Discussion
Perhaps it's a long-running confidence game ... after all the paladin can't detect any of us as definitely evil!

Re: OOC Discussion
Are we going to roleplay out meeting each other and the buildup to the adventure?
Re: OOC Discussion
The party has been adventuring together for some time. But why? How did such an odd group come together?
I thought I'd have the party already have been adventuring together a while so that you could build some group history & backstory, have a reason for everyone already being together other than meeting in a pub, and hopefully expedite getting the adventure under way. If you all want to play it as midlevel well-equipped adventurers who happen to meet and decide to adventure together...well, I still wait eagerly to see how this group gets together.

Coming soon:
"From the journal of Tumbler Metalcaster, locksmith and current adventurer..."
Filled with a skewed account of how the group came together.

Re: OOC Discussion
Something to think about with a druid and paladin, maybe something super-evil was threatening forests and that's how they ended up adventuring together.

FYI, we're waiting on one or two people to roll up characters, then we should be good to go.

Re: OOC Discussion
From the Journal of Tumbler Metalcaster, journeyman locksmith-
"Innkeep asked me today how our group came together. I was going to tell him to get stuffed when I though about how bizarre a bunch we must seem. A righteous human, a bunch of mismatched elves and me traveling together makes almost as much sense as a lock without a spring. Well we might seems a strange bunch but we all just kind of fell together somehow. The true elf and the human needed to get in somewhere, but legally, which is how they met me. The half breed we ran into while on the road one day and he stuck around. The darkie gave us all a fright when we got into where we needed to, but he turned out to be alright, for a loner. I dunno why but for some reason we didnt split up after we was done, we just got involved in some other crap. Helped each other out a bit and bam, here we are at this inn for a rest.
When I set out I didn't expect to be hanging around with a group like this but it hasn't been too bad. I guess. For a bunch of weirdos."

Tibbius knows about the dwarf's journal writing and had occasionally snuck a look over the shoulder. That entry makes him chuckle.
Re: 1. Prologue
Please let me know when your spells are set for the day and you've adjusted your character levels if necessary. Once both are done, I'll post the next move.
Re: 1. Prologue
One more thing: please list weapon proficiencies as a section under "Special Abilities." As a reminder, the number of proficiencies per class at 7th level is:
Cleric, Druid: 3
Fighter: 6
Paladin: 5
Magic-User: 2
Thief: 3
I'll assume that you've chosen proficiencies in the weapons you've equipped, but some of you have more weapons listed than proficiencies.
Thanks.

Re: OOC Discussion
I've updated the character thread with some basic stats and status. If you get a chance, please check the list of saving throws and let me know if there are any bonuses I've forgotten or if anything else looks out of whack.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: OOC Discussion
I'll amplify something I mentioned in the house rules: casting any spell will probably be seen as a hostile action. Suppose a guy in star-spangled robes and a pointy hat who you just met starts waving his hands at you and speaking in pseudo-Latin. Do you stand there and wait for him to finish, or do you put something pointy in his gut to make him stop?
Spell casting is an obvious action to people around the caster. They may not know what spell is being cast, but they'll know a spell is being cast. People will usually assume a casting action is hostile.
A charm person, if successfully cast, fixes part of the problem by making the target of the spell the caster's best buddy. But anyone else who is around at the time may not be so sanguine.
I would handle casting any spell in a social situation as an attack: you'd have to roll for surprise and initiative, with the target of the spell (and anyone else around) getting an attack opportunity.
Furthermore, I'd say that charming a person who is not actually an enemy is a morally questionable action. A neutral or chaotic character might do it, but a lawful good character certainly wouldn't!

Re: OOC Discussion
What level does a cleric have to be to have the ability to bless water and make it holy water?
Re: OOC Discussion
From what I can find on the Internets, the only 1e rules for creating holy water came from add-on sourcebooks or Dragon magazine and involved two or three clerics of the same deity gathering in a house of worship for their faith around an expensive font consecrated for the purpose. They cast the spells create water, purify food & drink, bless (or maybe protection from evil), and possibly chant and prayer. The clerics must spend eight hours praying and meditating before casting the spells.Computer +1 wrote:What level does a cleric have to be to have the ability to bless water and make it holy water?
In other words, it's not something easily done when on the road.
http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewt ... 4#p1338708:
http://www.datapacrat.com/Art/Games/RPG ... 0SAGEA.TXT:TSR #2156, DM's Option: High Level Campaigns goes a little more into detail:
'Any cleric or specialty priest with access to the required spells can create holy water once a week, provided a suitable font is available. The required spells are: create water, purify food & drink*, bless*, chant, and prayer. The spells marked with an asterisk are used in reversed form to create unholy water.
The priest must spend at least eight hours praying and meditating before casting the spells in the listed order. Any delay between finishing the casting of one spell and starting the next ruins the ceremony. The character must maintain the chant spell for one turn. Afterward, the cleric must rest at least eight hours before casting any spells. If forced into combat during this time, the character suffers a -4 penalty to all attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks.
A font is a specially blessed (or cursed) basin made of precious metals contained inside an elaborate case or pedestal fitted with a cover. A particular font can be used only once a week, and a temple or other religious building can contain only one font. Particularly large buildings might contain one font per wing or floor, at the DM’s option. A font’s maximum capacity for creating holy water depends on its cost; the more rare and expensive the font, the more favorably the deity to which it is dedicated looks
upon it.
Dragon Magazine #200 Sage Advice wrote:According to THE COMPLETE PRIEST'S HANDBOOK, three priests (or clerics) of the same faith of at least 2nd-level must get together in a temple dedicated to their deity and pray for a full hour. At the end of the hour, they must cast create water, protection from evil, and purify food and drink. This process creates a half gallon of holy water (16 four-ounce vials). Any extra water from the create water spell must be channeled off before the ritual is complete, or the DM can assume that the extra water simply disappears during the ritual. For every two priests added to the group, an additional half gallon of holy water can be created, up to a maximum of four gallons of holy water at one time. I strongly suggest that you require holy water to be held in specially blessed vials (cost 2-5 gp each). You might also require an expensive font and basin (value 100-10,000 gp, depending on capacity) to hold the holy water while it is being created and dispensed into vials. If the DM wants more control over who creates holy water and when, it wouldn't be unreasonable to add extra spells to the ritual. I'd suggest chant (to be maintained the whole time), bless, prayer and possibly combine. The required vials can he blessed in a similar ritual, which is required to make the blessing permanent.

Need an expensive font, takes an entire day, quantities limited based on materials used to make font, may only make once per week.
