Eris wrote: Mon Mar 24, 2025 7:52 pm Donovan and Sigrun chat about dreams as they walk toward the air/lock where they find Zaki already waiting for them. The small screen shows that a pair of Port Authority officers are waiting outside on the tarmac, at the bottom of the gangway.

OOC: Flighty has finished shutting things down on the Bridge and is free. Doug has gotten the ship's system switched over to ground operations and could deal with the Utility folks as they hook Dealer's Choice to Shore Utilities by exiting the aft air/lock. Karcsi is free from any immediate responsibilities so could do whatever. Where are Flighty, Karcsi and Doug and what are they doing?

Behind them lounging against the side of a utility vehicle are three more people in coveralls. All five are wearing filter masks and another glance at the screen to see the readings from the sensors shows an abnormally high level of Sulphur in the air outside. It is going to stink like rotten eggs outside, and from the levels you see you'd probably be knocked out in under an hour and dead in three if you run around outside without a working filter mask.

One of the Port Officers reaches forward and presses the button on the bannister of the gangway and you hear a woman's voice through the speakers, "Jenghe Port Authority requesting permission to board."
Helvorn hasn't logged in since March 15th. I hope everything is alright with him, but I think Flighty will have to sub for him this time.

"Donovan had a sudden stomach upset. Nothing big but he's in his cabin. I'll be the face this time it seems."

If Zaki has filter masks at hand, Flighty will slip one on. Or they might be standard at the gangway. One way or the other, he'll open the gangway and welcome them aboard.

He'll stick his hand out. "Hi. I'm Jamie Quinn, the pilot. The captain is under the weather and our doc has him on bed rest, so I'll be your point of contact today."

Sigrún commits to a smile and adds "I told him he shouldn't eat the whole jar of Vargr spices! Signe Valdis, co-pilot. Tell us how we can help".

She will make herself useful while Flighty and Zaki perform their Captain and Medic roles.

OOC: I hope so, too! :(
"Donovan had a sudden stomach upset.

OOC: No filter masks for you! :)

The two Port Officers remove their filter masks as they cycle through the air/lock and when the inner door opens you only catch a whiff of the stinky atmosphere that is outside. It's bad, even when it's already been filtered by the air/lock.

The lead Port Officer is a 40ish woman wearing the pips of a Lt Commander. She is tall and slim with a hawk nose and a saber scar running from her chin to just below her left eye. The other is a older man, probably in his 60's, short and running to fat wearing the twisted vines of a Medical Officer.

"Sorry to hear about your Skipper, Mr. Quinn." says the woman of the pair taking Flighty's hand, "I'm Lt. Commander Dooglass (she pronounces it Doo Glass) and this is Medical Officer Winn. Welcome to Jenghe."

Sigrún commits to a smile and adds "I told him he shouldn't eat the whole jar of Vargr spices! Signe Valdis, co-pilot. Tell us how we can help".

Lt Commander Dooglass smiles at Sigrun and chuckles, "He's probably on the head rather than the bed, then."

Dooglass glances at Karcsi standing behind the group and then at Zaki who is holding a slate with data on it and says, "Let me guess, Doc and Security. Am I right?"

The Medical Officer Winn shakes hands all around and says to Zaki (if she confirms that she is the ship's Doctor),"Let's adjourn to your Sick Bay, shall we?" as you walk he continues, "Have you got passengers aboard? Any Low? Any illnesses to report other than your Captain's upset stomach?"

Dooglass says, "I'm going off duty in about 30 minutes, so let's make this quick. I need to see your papers, your manifest, and do a scan of the cargo in your hold. I also need to tell everyone aboard about the need for filter masks if you go outside the ship for any length of time. Law Level here on Jenghe is low, open carry for anything short of machine guns or plasma rifles, but don't use them because everyone here will shoot back."

"I also need to collect the docking and utilities fee.", she says, "It's 200 credits a day, minimum 5 day stay, here on Jenghe."

"If you're planning to bunk off ship, I recommend the Octagon Hotel just outside the Port Line. It's in the old Octagon Society building, you can't miss it." she stops and adds, "Any questions for me?"

Sigrún hands over her Signe Valdis ID and "papers" stating her Flight and Pursers qualifications.* and then keeps out of everyone's way while she checks out local gun dealers on the Jenghe datanet.

When prompted for questions she asks Lt Commander Dooglass "I think the Skipper wanted a quick turnaround must we stay for the minimum five days?"

(OOC: * She is not actually qualified as Steward (who knew! ;) :P ) but these papers say she is... ).

Also I'm delighted to report a helvorn sighting today! 8-) He may well be reading in / catching up... ;) :D

“We’re expediting our turnaround, so we’ll be staying on board. We have low passengers, but none awake.”

I can’t remember if any are getting off here.

He’ll let Zaki handle the passenger related questions while he handles paperwork and pays fees.

"No, you don't have to stay 5 days, but you gotta pay the 5 day minimum, sorry." says Dooglass, "Rules you know."

When Sigrun gets around to it, she finds Yggs Gun Range located about 2 kicks from the Port located at 116 Minor Way in the port town...which is called Jenghesburg, btw. That appears to be the best bet to get the more specialized weapons and ammunition she is after. On the Port, there is also Davis Chandler's & Goods for Starship related items, but whether they have weapons or not, she can't tell from the advertisements.

Nope, all booked for Regina.
He’ll let Zaki handle the passenger related questions while he handles paperwork and pays fees.
Zaki and the MO head for Sickbay while Flighty leads Dooglass, Sigrun and Karcsi to the cargo hold.

The Port Doctor checks the paperwork that covers their stop on Extolay on Zaki datapad and takes a quick look at the low berths and nods saying, "That'll do!" before putting his print on the computerized forms and transmitting a copy to Zaki's data pad.

"That's it for me." he says, "Hope you enjoy your stay on Jenghe."

Meanwhile in the cargo hold much the same is taking place. Dooglass checks manifests and takes a cursory glance at the labels on the outside of cargo containers, commenting, "Radioactives, eh? Check with Dix Brother's Mining. They might be your best bet selling that here."

In fifteen minutes both Port Officials are satisfied, have signed off on your cargo, health and safety, and collected 1,000 credits to cover your stay and are bidding you a good day.

At the back of the ship, Doug is helping the Port Workers hook up the ship's utilities to shore lines. One of them asks, Doug, "So where you headed to next?"

Doug looks at worker and smiles and says I'm just the grease monkey with the engines. I let the flight deck worry about that. As long as I'm getting paid it doesn't matter where I'm going.

Once the Port Officials are away Sigrún declares "If we are expecting trouble to catch up with us... which, in my experience, it always does..." after a moment's thought she shows her teeth in a feral smile "...and because fate is inexorable". She adds "We face professional opposition and so need better armament. Put bluntly I have been in better defended public saunas. So, I am going gun shopping to Yggs Gun Range. It's 2 kicks outside the Port at Jenghesburg. Local hired transport there and back and so no sight... uh... smelling. If anyone wants to come along they're welcome".

She will set about hiring a cab for the trip.

(OOC: Good job we're not going to Jenghe's gun shop in Yggsburgh - we'd have slipped genres! ;) :) ).

“I’m no expert, but I can hit what I aim at. I have a standard auto pistol and a body pistol. I like the sound of military loads. How will extended magazines affect carrying and using the auto pistol?”

As I have significantly more experience with firearms than Flighty, I can tell you that extended magazines are good to have but make the weapons more unwieldy. You don’t want to have one in a holstered weapon as that makes the draw problematic. They’d go in the pocket for extra firepower.

Sigrún replies candidly "It makes the draw awkward but I prefer to switch weapons rather than combat reload". She eyes Flighty levelly "You know that if they catch us we're looking at a boarding action - no time there to run dry or reload. Try one of the boarding pistols I've made - they're good for close in. If it comes to it you'll have to hold their second wave off".

As I have significantly more experience with firearms than Flighty, I can tell you that extended magazines are good to have but make the weapons more unwieldy. You don’t want to have one in a holstered weapon as that makes the draw problematic. They’d go in the pocket for extra firepower.
I must confess I'm mostly theory (and game mechanics). I have shot .38 revolvers but if I really had to hit something the Mk IV Lee Enfield is the answer. :)

Doug looks at worker and smiles and says I'm just the grease monkey with the engines. I let the flight deck worry about that. As long as I'm getting paid it doesn't matter where I'm going.
The worker nods and says, "Above your pay grade, eh?"

The workers continue to get the lines set up and start to depart. Doug walks along behind them to the edge of the ship then stops. He notices that the one worker who asked you where you were headed next detours from the others. It appears to Doug that he is trying to get a look inside the cargo hole through the open cargo bays on the side of the ship.

Karcsi, standing in the shadows behind the open cargo bay doors is keeping an eye on things. He watches the Port Officers head back to their utility vehicle and sees the Utility workers heading around from the back of the ship toward the vehicle. Then he sees one of the Port Utility workers veer off and move toward the ship as the others walk away. It looks like he wants to get a look inside the cargo bay, maybe even enter it.

While this is happening aft, Donovan, Sigrun, and Flighty get word that two of the freight owners are coming through the Port gates and will be arriving at the ship in just a few minutes with large lorries to remove their property from the ship.

(OOC: Good job we're not going to Jenghe's gun shop in Yggsburgh - we'd have slipped genres! ;) :) ).

OOC: Since Donovan wasn't there earlier, he probably isn't there now unless helvorn moves him into place, don't you think?

Flighty will get the paperwork for the cargo in order and wait for the freight owners' arrival.
