June 7th 1066.

After breakfasting in the common quarters, the group head out towards the ruined Moathouse. Golgarth, Gunter & Sidkrake ride their horses, Johka, Dalin, Cloverfield & Knatchbull take to the draft horse pulled wagon. The route is not arduous but long, initially following the northeastern trail from the settlement over the Old Dwarf Bridge and then past the crossroads junction south of the citadel towards Helix in the west. The Druid's stronghold off the beaten track on the banks of the Moorwash River.

A market day and traders pass you on the road, a caravan of wagons filled with local fayre, fur pelts, and specialised hardwoods. Militia patrols vanguard the route thus limiting bandit raids and Froglings. The group make it to the stone bridge by early afternoon.

On the near side of the bridge is a small militia group. They have a road block erected and hold up your wagon and those of a few other traders from crossing. You can see that in the middle of the bridge another militia group is erecting a scaffold that appears to be very much like a gallows platform. Cuffed and restrained among them are a couple of dwarven prisoners, though you cannot identify them as they are hooded with sacks over their heads.

One thing you do recognise though, at least for Gunter and Golgarth, is a mangy mongrel dog that barks profusely at some mistreatment of his master. The hound is subsequently kicked and two crossbow men take potshots at it, causing it to run at full pelt, away from the scene but towards your end of the bridge.

The militia near you see the dog and bored of their duty, load up crossbows and wager who might "finish the flea ridden critter off."

The dog is Kolt, animal.companion to Froed who assisted the search for elder Barraclough and is a rogue intermediary between Bogtown & Ironguard Motte.

Gunter Red-Shirt "Ah fookin’ hells…”

All business, the former mercenary scans the bridge and militiamen milling about and tries to quickly assess the situation militarily.

As he approaches, Gunter notes how many men, their arms and equipment and general state of readiness.

Dalin: feels sorry for the hound as it kind of reminds him of the one that one of the other hired mercs lost on one of his expeditions. The dwarf squats down and whistles to the dog patting his leg hoping that will coax the critter to him.

actions for Golgarth and Johka please.

in answer to your observation. The road blocking crew at your end of the bridge are a sully group of ragtag conscript Duchy militia, in basic uniform. Half bear crossbows, other have a typical pike or halberd. There are six men here.

In the middle of the bridge, a similar number with a group of labouring carpenters. They are led by some provost Sgt-at-arms and one young man acts as a standard bearer with a Duchy pennant on his held polestaff. You could expect another road block of conscripts perhaps holding up traffic passing across the bridge way over on the other side.

Johka approaches the nearest group of militia. He quickly looks them over for the youngest, most inexperienced looking of their number, thinking he might be more open to questioning.

"What's the story with this lot?" he asks, indicating the hooded figures about to be hanged.

Golgarth

you have to know that despite being a cleric, wisdom is not one of his better attributes.

I figure if that is Froed, a dwarf who helped us defeat the drow priest then I at least owe him my loyalty and would not want to see him or any other dwarf swing from a rope, dangled over the bridge. Besides he was a link between Bogtown and Ironguard rogue guilds so may be holding information relevant to Renata, the Masquerade Ball or the cult.

I cast Sanctuary upon myself and urge my mount and the other riders over any roadblock to ride towards the middle of the bridge.

"Gunter, Sidkrake , with me. Dalin get your men to hold these militia. Any resistance, throw them over the bridge!"

With that, I ride towards uncertain doom.

Dalin shrugs and moves towards the militia folk not really sure what to say or do. "You lot look like ya could use a stiff drink." he says not really sure what else to say.

"Gunter, Sidkrake , with me. Dalin get your men to hold these militia. Any resistance, throw them over the bridge!"

Gunter hesitates only a second then clicks his tongue and vaults his horse over the barricade following Golgarth.

Heart hammering thinking of all the ways this could go wrong, he rides just behind Golgarth’s left flank while Sidrake takes a similar position to the right in an arrowhead formation.

Trouble on the Old Dwarf Bridge.

June 7th 1066.

Driven by a righteous indignation not to see a man strung up, Golgarth looks to intervene in the gallows justice, riding over the barricades towards the central group of figures. Sidkrake & Gunter just behind.

Startled by the sudden turn of events, it takes the road-blocking crew a second to figure the trio of horses flashing past. Their barricade some ad-hoc branches. Dalin seated in his wagon tries to engage the militia in conversation, small talk to while away the time or cause a distraction. Johka asks regarding the prisoners.

"Brigands I hear. Caught them on the road associates of a brigandine. Gaffer's been told to string up high as a warning to the Bogtown bandits that the Duchy won't tolerate their thriving ways."

He would go on but those who gallop past halt further conversation. Two of the militia, crossbows loaded to potshot at the dog, now take aim at those in horseback. Before they can take aim, some of the assembled guards collapse, overcome by a deep drowsiness caused by the spell craft of mage Cloverfield.

Dalin and Johka suddenly find that the two guards they are talking to bring their arms to bear. Knatchbull jumps off the wagon to back them both up.

The other traders in the caravan behind begin to back up, not wanting involvement in the conflict, watching things develope.

Galloping along the bridge, about a quarter of the way along, Golgarth is challenged by a duo of pikemen who brace themselves across his path, hoping he will heed their demands to stop.

Beyond them, the militia are putting finishing touches to the gallows. The structure built on the side of the bridge must be continually built as from time to time people are hung there or at other times, the gallows are burned away as an act of defiance.

Despite his warding prayer, these guards are veteran jobsworths, giving heed to no man or beast save the Sgt and his orders. As Golgarth heeds not himself, barrelling past them to challenge the Sgt-at-arms, one of the guards takes a swipe at him while the second tries to halt the others.

"Damnit fool, I said halt! This be Crown business you be interfering with." the pikeman shouts. The action causes the other militia to prepare for any trouble and seeing a quartet suddenly fall prone by the road block, the veteran Sgt-at-arms begins to rally his men.

The two hooded dwarves are shepherded to a wall and watched over by one the standard bearer, two crossbowmen climb the gallows platform so as to get advantage of height. Another begins to advance with the Sgt-at-arms.

A quarter of the way along, two pikemen militia have injured and unhorsed Golgarth. Gunter & Sidkrake are free to act.

At the near end of the bridge, a quartet of militiamen are under a sleep spell. Two others are engaged with Dalin, Johka, Knatchbull and Cloverfield.

Gunter Red Shirt

Time slows for Gunter as he watches Golgarth struck full on and flung from his mount. Gunter spurs his horse directly into the pikemen for a trample hopefully before they can maneuver clear for another attack.

He strikes a shield bash on the nearest for good measure as he rides into the pair, then grabs the reins of Golgarth’s mount and breaks both horses into a full galloping charge towards the center of the bridge. He yells over his shoulder as he breaks away.

Sid get him to safety! I’m going for Froed!”

He tucks low in the saddle as he races towards the two dwarves and the standard bearer.

“Lord Cromm if you’re listening, your servants could really use some help here.”

Golgarth

As he falls to the ground, the verses of a hymn go through his mind, "Nearer my God to thee."

Rolling over on his back, he gathers his thoughts and next to last breath to cast Command upon the veteran pikeman and tell him to "Jump!" gesturing over the side of the bridge (rather than up and down in the spot).

From the description, I'm assuming the branch barricade is close enough to Johka that he can do this

Johka steps away from the guards and his companions, as if caught off guard and as fearful as the other bystanders.

Any kind of test required for this?

Once he is several paces away from, and hopefully out of mind of, the guards, he produces a torch from his pack and lights it, intending to set the barricade ablaze if no one stops him, to create further confusion and hopefully take attention away from his companions.

The Old Dwarf Bridge.

There is confusion and mayhem among those at the bridge. Golgarth has charged over the barrier intent in seizing Froed away from being lynched in the erected gallows. Succeeding in his initial surprise, he bypasses the slouched militia guarding the barricade but has run headlong into the pointy end of a pikestaff. At death's door himself, he utters some divinely inspired verbal, not his usually proselytising preaching but an unction 'to do one' and urges the veteran pikeman to take a running jump.

Gunter barrels by, grabbing the free horse's reins and knocking aside the pikemen, gallops further towards the lynch mob and the advancing Sgt-at-arms.

Sidkrake draws his blade to swing at the guards but his aim is awry. The two pikemen stand firm, ignoring the Command spell. Both attack to defend against the Duchy lawbreakers assault, narrowly missing the prone cleric but the mercenary is skewered and unhorsed. Sidkrake -8hp, unconscious & bleeding out.

Meanwhile at the barricade, Dalin is as caught by surprise and the sudden turn of events as much as the guards. Several come under the influence of the Sleep spell cast by Cloverfield. While the two remaining challenge the dwarf, Johka sets the barricade alight. Covered in lantern oil, it soon burns brightly and becomes a wall of fire. Knatchbull jumps down from the wagon seat to back up Dalin. Sending trouble he draws his blade but despite his intention, he cannot stab any of the guards.

Cloverfield the mercenerary mage leaves the wagon also. He holds up his hands in surrender fashion and appeals to the guards. Smiling and giving a more friendly gesture, he succeeds in calming the tense atmosphere.

"No, we are no trouble. Friends, compatriots. Aid us please, you will not be harmed. Isn't that right Sir?" he appeals to the two guards better nature as Dalin can gesture to the half-orc to lower his weapon.

"But what in earth are you doing?" one of the militia asks while the other tries to rouse his sleeping comrades.
Gunter charges, shield in one hand, reins of his horse between his teeth and clutching the reins of Golgarth's mount in the other hand.

"Bring him down!" the Sgt-at-arms signals to the two crossbowmen on the gallows who track the rider and snipe at him. One bolt thuds into his shield but the other takes him in the shoulder. -2hp Injured, he presses on, swerving past the blade of the Sgt-at-arms and standard bearer. You shout at the hooded dwarves. While the crossbowmen quickly reload, the dwarves try to make good an escape. They head butt and kick the guard watching them but veiled, he cuffs them both around the head with the pommel of his blade.

"You want them, you'll have to come and get them!" he taunts.
And so, as the action increases and decisions made on what to do. actions please.

Dalin shrugs to his two mercs "I've nothing to do with any brigands. Sorry. I was just waiting to pass. The only thing I felt bad for was the dog. I don't know anything about these dwarves you have. I'm not exactly from this area. I suppose if anything you might say most of us on this cart hail from Helix. I more or less would say I hail from parts unknown though Crocked Yew may well be the closest place to home I've found." then he whispers to the closest of the two mercs with him "If we can get through this without violence then lets do that." he kind of wiggles the fingers on one hand nonchalantly to the mage merc, hoping it relays his intent. "If anything good sir guard. I'd prefer to make friends, or offer you a good drink when you're done." he says trying to emphasize on the word 'friends' hoping maybe this helps get the point of tactics to both mercs.

They head butt and kick the guard watching them but veiled, he cuffs them both around the head with the pommel of his blade.

"You want them, you'll have to come and get them!" he taunts.
“So be it then!”

Gunter charges both horses towards the lone militiaman guarding the dwarves, hoping to break his resolve as more than 200 stone of man and beast bear down upon him.

At the last moment Gunter drops the second set of reins and strikes an overhead blow from horseback with his axe.

He twists the blow to strike with flat side instead of the blade and trying for non lethal damage as he literally rings the guards bell.

“Cromm’s Mercy upon you!”

Having accomplished his initial goal, Johka is uncertain how to proceed. Seeing his traveling companions Gunter and Golgarth launch into action against the pikemen, his first instinct was to aid them by separating the two groups of soldiers, but as Dalin attempts to converse with the militia, he finds himself second guessing his actions.

After a moment, he rouses himself to action. Having thrown his lot in with these he must commit to staying the course. Leaping through the wall of fire, (hopefully before it has completely engulfed the barricade but acknowledging the possibility of taking some damage), he takes a moment to survey the scene and moves rapidly for the nearest guard that is threatening the others.

The Old Dwarf Bridge

Golgarth clutches his holy symbol and reaches out in faith and hope, getting to the bleeding body of Sidkrake and ministering healing virtue to his wounds. The mercenerary sits up and smiles, thankful for the healing gift. It is the last thing Golgarth sees as the veteran pikeman stabs him mercilessly again.-7hp. He collapses and bleeds out in a pool of blood and innards that are now out-ards.

Gunter strikes out upon the horse and striking out upon the guard. He crowns him across his head, almost lopping it off. The guard falls and under a hail of crossbow bolts from the guards on the gallows, you manage to cut the bindings of the dwarf prisoners and they mount the free horse. You turn to make good your escape, dodging the standard bearer and sword thrust of the Sgt-at-arms.

To your despair though, as you gallop back towards the now flaming barricade, you see the collapsed priest upon the floor. Sidkrake mounts his horse as Johka and Kolt the dog come running to add numbers to the rescue attempt.

Behind the Sgt-at-arms come the militia group from the other side of the bridge. No place to hang about, they will be within crossbow range in a couple of rounds.

At the fiery barricade, Dalin tries to parlay amicably with the two guards who are not ensorcelled to sleep.

The two guards hear you, but Johka burning the barricade and Knatchbull previously intimidating them with a missed sword thrust; despite your 'hands up, don't stab' stance, they are not convinced.

"The dwarves were for the hanging and you be for it too." Rightly or wrongly, they assume your racial connection to the suspected brigands and the current conflict as being a co-ordinated attempt to halt proceedings.

They draw blades to defend themselves against you and the massive half-orc. Having been attacked, the mercenerary responds with a cutting blow. Cloverfield gets back on the wagon to turn it around.
