Savant
Savant speaks this time.....
"There was some conflict about a week ago around an opened barrow with some strange half animal half beast men. The barrow was consecrated by a priest, but my companions and I were injured and had to leave. We are returning to check the state of he mound."
Quick sidenote to everyone, all of the above is true. You can read the hallowed ground thread if you like, but long story short, we came with an NPC priest, investigated the barrow, chased off a poltergeist, camped in the barrow, were attacked by beast men, fought them off, then carried away what we could. The priest was killed randomly by frogs on the way home, so the conclusion wasn't as tidy as it could've been.

Fapp was not there so will not comment but nods with approval at what Savant has to say.

Re: Barrow Mounds: Relic Raiders.
May 14th 1066.
The Barrowmoor, southwest of Helix, Duchy of Ironguard.
Conditions: Windy but clear skies.
Visibility: down to 60'ft in all directions once on the Moor. Lantern (Sundance)
12.25pm.
Savant stands his ground, reasoning with the intimidating trio of large humanoids. "Aye. Many come and dig where their noses smell treasure. Best not to dig too deeply, might get your noses bitten off." the bugbear taunts. "From the village up north?
We want no trouble with them, have a bounty on folk from the eastern settlement. A mage and a barbarian orc-blood lass. Suppose that's not you lot is it? Still you be looking for treasure and we need recompense for our time. Call it a bribe, a road tax, a toll to the mammoth gates.
We'll take 10 gold apiece and you can be in your merry way." he says, crossing his arms and barring further travel down the trail.
One bugbear flanks to the side of Fapp on his warg Chewwy.
One of the bugbears walks to the horse. "Thirty gold it is then or you can pack your bags and turn around."
Tamson readies his bow, looking for a command to attack and Sundance looks to be mentally rehearsing a spell. Eldon and Dalin stand passive, not sure wether to contribute gold or move to attack. Sarge growls but his snarl is ignored by the tall figure.
actions everyone please.

Savant
Savant holds his hand out to calm his companions.
"Remember friends, eyes on the prize."
He loosens his coin purse and tosses it to the speaking bugbear.
"Thirty-two gold. A small tip for your politeness." He says evenly.

Savant -32gp pays the trail toll, deciding against a bloody confrontation. His purse much lighter but at least no blood spilt and he can add it to 'expedition expenses', hoping to recuperate the value back. Just one extra amphora could make the difference up.
The bugbears look pleased with their successful intimidation. "Should have asked for fifty gold. You paid so easy. Maybe next time. We can take the warg too, and eat the dog" the trio stand aside on the trail, still eyeing you suspiciously.
"May that which is dead never die." the leader says. You depart.
After another mile or so, you come once more to the familiar field of Mammoth bones, most decorated with trinkets and ribbons. Carrion birds perch on the arched ribcages, squawking over titbits and heralding your approach.
anyone wanting to leave a trinket here can script that in their posts.
Trekking north east from the graveyard, you once more ascend the green mound where a skeletal hand reaches in vain hope of deliverance. The finger digits folded into a rude sign. Going directly east you arrive at the foot of the 'potter's mound', the excavated area clear of staked bodies.

Re: Barrow Mounds: Relic Raiders.
Savant
Savant wedges a copper piece into the mammoth bone site. As some other stop, he turns and speaks...
"You all did very well staying your hand. For 32 gold we walked past those brutes, no one injured, no arrows spent, no time wasted. Worth every piece. But make no mistake, I do not suffer bullies.
If we see them again, especially with distance like before, we open fire. Concentrate on the big one. The others will run if he drops."
Upon reaching the potters mound, Savant hold up his hand for everyone's attention.....
"If this is still empty, it's not without peril. It's a long hallway entrance to a domed main chamber. A secret door lies to the right at you enter the main chamber. There was a poisonous moss at the end of the hall last time. And a poltergeist in the top of the dome. Both were dispatched. In theory. We also left a body in a sarcophagus inside. I'd prefer if we left that undisturbed. The rogue will check the entrance for traps. We'll set up at the door. Him and I will enter the hall with wetted masks and wax in our ears. If it's clear, Fapp and the mage will come in and we'll make sure the secret room is clear. If that works, Fapp, the ranger, and the mage post outside while the rest of us carry urns. We pack up and make haste back. Does anyone contest this plan? If not, let's go."
Savant goes in with his shield and 3 lit torches and halfway down the hallway throws two down. One at the entrance and one as far in as he can manage. He has his oil flask handy at this belt. If anything comes at us he drops the oil and torch in front of him, draws his sword, and backs out.
But BEFORE all of this..... does it look the same as we left it? As I recall we sealed it back up as best as we could. Does the seal look how we left it? If it looks disturbed, I take four in, instead of two. Fapp and the mage right away. In fact, let's do that anyway. They can be 10 ft behind us to haul us out if the masks don't work. They should also have masks and wax though. I imagine it will take about five minutes to prepare that.

Fapp
The little halfling nods and smiles as Savant speaks.
Yeah, if we run into those creatures again I want to make them pay for insulting Chewy, thinking he would be so easy to kill
and eat, he thinks to himself.
He will wait attentively as part of the group proceeds, whilst the rest of the group go forward.

"Chewey", lol! That cracks me up every time for some reason!
Re: Barrow Mounds: Relic Raiders.
Not to be weird, but before Star Wars and all, my Grandmother had a dog named Chewie... I am 56 so Chewie existed before Star Wars & al.LordKane77 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 02, 2021 1:30 am "Chewey", lol! That cracks me up every time for some reason!
She looked after my sister and myself when we would visit my grandmother so when I decided on a name for my Warg I chose Chewy,
The name is not spelled the same but I stand by my name choice

May 14th 1066.
The Barrowmoor, southwest of Helix, Duchy of Ironguard.
Conditions: Windy but clear skies.
Visibility: down to 60'ft in all directions once on the Moor.
Lantern (Sundance).
2.10pm.
The group trek over the grassy knoll with the skeleton hand. Paths of trampled grass indicate the route from the mammoth field to the nearest mound are well worn. Churned up areas of abandoned digs. No one has bothered to dug out the unfortunate skeleton and give him the respect of a proper burial it seems. Adventurers content to leave the upright bones and whomever they belong to well alone. In this place, who knows what critters and undead animates stalk.
The 'Potter's Barrow' seems more civilized, in the sense that an area if ground has been dug up, a seal exposed and by Reuben's effort, broken through. Previously you replaced the broken pieces to try and re-seal the entrance. It looks as though other attempts have been made to gain entrance and rebuild the portal for you can plainly see the ground bare of grass and marked from a collective of booted feet. Though nothing stirs as you take down the shattered side of the seal, putting the stones to one side.
The short passage and side alcove are sooty, probably from firebrand scorch marks not a fire. It is not recent, as in hours old but you can estimate other investigators have entered here between your departure and the present.
Laying down torches to light the way, Savant
advances with Eldon and Sarge. After what seems an age of checking, you step beyond the threshold and into the domed chamber.
Breath a sigh of relief for it is unoccupied. At least, not occupied by anything you can see. The sarcophagus in the centre of the room has been unsealed, flies buzz in a swarm above the corpse, still resting among the shattered fragments of the pottery figure.
I am not entirely sure what decision you made on the bodies of the hybrid humanoids that you killed here. I think the suggestion was to leave them outside the mound rather than inside. Certainly their bodies are not where you left them in any event.
You can also see that the hook handle that latches the secret door closed is still intact, an old vase hanging from the mount. Whoever has been here has not disturbed much. There is sign that your cooking fire was reused, centipedes scurry over the remnants of food leftovers.
Around the room, chalked with ticks and question marks are amphora jars, passed over previously but now sought after.
Outside the mound, the horse is hitched and Dalin sees to the cargo chests.
Tamson climbs a but higher up the incline to watch over the entrance, Sundance enters to cast an appraising glance at the vessels.
Fapp you can do a little patrol around on Chewwy. At least one hex in each direction surrounding the barrow is just gravelly meadow and free of other structures or burial plots.

Re: Barrow Mounds: Relic Raiders.
Savant
I had noted that three of us would open the secret door together and check to make sure that room is still empty. If it is, we had pretty much triple-searched that, but I will offer it a cursory glance to make sure. If there's nothing of note, Savant closes the door......
Once satisfied that everything is in order, and there are no surprises, Savant gets to the next stage of business......
"Ok, Tamson is outside watching. I just want him on the lookout, but he can help load once stuff is out. Fapp should do the same, but just be lookout. I want someone dedicated to only that. I want the same thing from the mage, but inside the mound. Just stand inside the main area and keep your eyes peeled. We've been surprised in this place from outside and from within. If you even get a bad feeling, say something. Eldon, if you think you have an eye for any urn being better than the next, then mark them, if not, it's you and I moving them. Have Sarge sit tight in here for good measure. I have to measure both of these doors, but then I'll just be moving urns. Dalin, just transport urns. Let's be quick and get out of here."
Savant measures the entrance on the outside and the inside of the mound. He'll use rope he has to measure and make knots to denote size. Length, height, and depth, so that in theory a door could be manufactured elsewhere and brought here. He also uses a torch to burn up any moss remaining that had previously caused problems, especially in the interior entrance. He paces off the rough dimensions of the tomb, hallway, and secret room. Once that's done he gets to carrying urns. (He's got his shield in his hand for all of this) He also takes a count of the final amount of urns being carried (I assume that everyone is going to also carry one in their arms) and a rough estimate of how many are left. Savant has Eldon do a search of about 10 urns we're not taking with us. There was some gold to be found before. If nothing happens, Savant also notes how the front seal looks when we put it back up, but we haul ass back.
