Dr. Clarke:

Speaking to the officer "Well, of course, I'm a member of the facility here at the university my good man." Dr. Clarke puts his hand inside his jacket pocket and produces his identification. "You may also check with the administration if this doesn't suffice."

He then calls over to the officer with the diary. "Is the woman on the bed Ms. Waite?"

Asenaith Waite's Room, Chambers Hall, Miskatonic University
Arkham, Massachusetts
7:11 pm, Oct. 7, 1925

Officer McAshton looks at Prof. Clarke’s identification and nods. He answers Dr. Morgan’s question: “I’m Officer McAshton of the Arkham Police department.”

“I don’t know who the dead girl is,” responds the other officer. “Do you two recognize her?” He motions for Professors Clarke and Morgan and Edith Walton to look at the body.

Edith Walton steps into the bedroom, now well lit with the lamp turned on. “Dear God, that is Asenaith. What have you done David?”

Asenaith Waite’s neck has bruises. The bed duvet is rumpled from the presumed struggle. The pillow is on the floor. The room is in otherwise normal appearance.

Edith swoons and the officer helps her sit on a chair in the common room.

“Now why were you in this room alone?” Officer McAshton asks Prof. Clarke. “How did you get in? What is your relationship to Ms. Waite? Do you deny your murdered the girl? What is your story, and skip the history lectures.”

Of Dr. Morgan: “Why are you here? Show us identification. We saw you lurking outside the building - why? What is your relationship to Ms. Waite? What is your story?”

Marius clutches the pistol in his jacket pocket as he and Reginald leave The Cosmic Bean cafe. They walk, appearing outwardly calm but inside a bundle of nerves. They keep a discrete eye on the man following them across the street. Lamp post lights flicker. A light breeze carries drizzle that is slowly soaking them.

After a few blocks Reginald and Marius see an alleyway and duck in. Each attempts to hide (make Hide roll), preparing to confront or jump the man tailing them.

After a minute a silhouette is cast in the alley as the man approaches...
Please declare actions and make rolls as necessary. Reginald and Marius assume they are hidden regardless of Hide roll result.

Dr. Clarke:

David sighs heavy at the motionless body of Ms. Waite. "Yes, that is Ms. Waite."

Officer McAshton: “Now why were you in this room alone?”
"I came to speak to Ms. Waite and there happen to be no one here."

Officer McAshton: "How did you get in?"
"The door was unlocked. I knocked before I entered and the door swung open."

Officer McAshton: "What is your relationship to Ms. Waite?"
"As I mentioned before, Ms. Waite is under investigation for her connection to a series of murders that she may or may not be apart of."

Officer McAshton: "Do you deny your murdered the girl?"
"Absolutely! I am a distinguished member of this university and from a well to do family."

Officer McAshton: "What is your story, and skip the history lectures.”
"You see officer, Ms. Waite is the cousin of the late Konstantin Chertovski of 16 Shady Lane, Brooklyn, NY. Upon the raid of his estate, we discovered Ms. Waite in his presence as well as several brutally mutilated bodies. An indescribable horror that I will save you from. The mutilated bodies were similar to the bodies of the students of this university found at Combs Mill back in August. Myself, Dr. Morgan, and Ms. Walton paid a visit to Ms. Waite earlier today but she was not very cooperative. Dr. Morgan and I thought it would be best to speak to her one-on-one instead of attacking her in a larger group. Since she was once my student I took the lead to speak to her. I can't speak any more about my investigation as it is an active investigation of course. If you need any more information for your Sargent you can contact Agent Mulder of the B.O.I. He is heading the investigation and will collaborate our involvement."

Dr. Francis Morgan:

Responding to Officer McAshton: ”Now see here my good sir! I wasn’t lurking outside! Such a strong word surrounded with nasty implications.” Frank withdraws his wallet and presents his credentials to the officer.

“As Dr. Clarke explained, we came to speak with Ms. Waite. On our way here we were being followed by a questionable fellow, and I stayed back to address the stranger while Dr. Clarke came up to converse with Ms. Waite.”

Frank gestures to the cracked-open window, “Might that be of interest?”

Officer McAshton looks skeptical as he talks with Professors Clarke and Morgan. “We’ll check all this,”he says, taking notes. “The window being open has been noted, but I don’t think it means anything. The perpetrator wasn’t seen climbing, and it's a third story."

“A stranger you say? Well I didn’t see anyone but you loitering outside when we arrived,” Officer McAshton tells Dr. Morgan.

Edith Walton is sipping a glass of water while talking quietly with the other officer. He too is taking notes.

The third officer is searching the bedroom and common room.

“We have conflicting reports here,” states Officer McAshton after conferring with his colleague. “There has been an accusation of murder. This diary may answer some questions. We’re going to take you Prof. Clarke down to the station while we sort this out.”

Reginald tenses, adrenaline pumping. The last time he was in fist-a-cuffs was with that arrogant chap at Andover who questioned the purity of his nationality.

The man walks down the alleyway. He stops suddenly, spying Reginald and Marius. But too late, as they leap out arms swinging!

Reginald’s punch hits the man’s shoulder (2 HP), while Marius delivers a swift kick to the left hip (3 HP). The man grunts with surprise and pain. He staggers back, turns and runs unsteadily away.

Miskatonic University Campus
Arkham, Massachusetts
7:45 pm, Oct. 7, 1925

Dr. Clarke agrees to escort the still-shaken Edith Walton to her home. He knows it is a fifteen minute walk northwest through university grounds, several blocks beyond campus in a fashionable neighborhood of brownstones.

"Thank you Frank for walking me," says Edith. "I feel so vulnerable."

She opens an umbrella against the light rain. "Share?"

Image

The two walk along the campus paths. "Something is very wrong with David. He hasn't been himself lately. He kept talking about Asenaith. To think I was beginning to feel jealous, when really I should have been afraid for the poor girl. Frank, have you noticed anything odd about David? He has been under so much stress recently with this case."

and Arkham Police Station
Arkham, Massachusetts
8:30 pm, Oct. 7, 1925

Dr. Morgan waits another half-hour as the officers finish their search and questioning of student neighbors in the rooms to each side of Asenaith's room. During that time a University security officer, a Mr. Frank Long, appears and discusses the case with the police, and also interviews Edith, Dr. Clarke, and neighbor students.

"Do you have anything to add to what you already said to Officer McAshton?" asks Mr. Long to Dr. Clarke.

Dr. Clarke is then escorted to the Arkham police station. He is placed in a small room with a table, four chairs, and one hanging bulb that casts a harsh light. He waits for about 20 minutes before a rough-around-the-edges man with a five o'clock shadow and a cheap suit enters and sits down.

"I'm Detective Bloch of the Arkham police," he introduces himself. "Cigarette?"

Image

"Now I've read the reports and tomorrow when the BOI is open we'll check your story. You're a man of position, so let's assume that it's true. That still leaves you an alleged murderer, because your 'friend' Edith Walton says she saw you with your hands around the dead girl's throat. That you had been harassing Asenaith Waite and were obsessed with the girl. A quick perusal of Waite's diary shows recent entries that you had confronted her on campus, made some lewd remarks for a man of your station, and even groped her. She wrote she was afraid of you. What do you say to that?"

The suspected cultist, battered by Reginald and Marius' blows, attempts to flee. As he turns, Reginald swings again but the man pulls away and the bookdealer's fist hits only air!

Marius yells and leaps for the man, tackling him at the waist. He falls to the ground with Marius in a tangle of limbs.
- Actions for round three!
- Marius getting a rear attack gets a +10% bonus, so his roll hits. The cultist gets a -10% on his grapple parry, again due to the rear attack, and fails.
- Cultist grapple parry (15) [1d100] = 17

Dr. Frank Morgan:

Frank accepts Edith’s invitation to share the umbrella and casts her a concerned look, “Yes, David has been under tremendous stress lately, and it’s understandable that he might not seem himself. You don’t seem quite yourself either, Edith. How are you feeling?”

The rains starts falling hard. Edith pauses in front of a Gothic statue at the edge of campus when Frank asks her the question.

Image

"I feel terrible," says Edith. "David has killed someone! I don't know what to think. David has been closed mouth about this investigation, but I fear it has consumed him! He has been ignoring me of late. And the things Asenaith had said about the investigators of the case - it's hard to believe. I feel so scared."

Edith tenderly grasps Frank's arm. He feels her shiver. She looks up into his eyes. "Help me," she whispers.

Frank knows Edith is a woman of some moxy and means, an independent girl of the times, who David said had adventured about the world with her father. Frank suspects she had become romantically involved with David. She seems quite shaken now.

The heavy rain falls around them.

"Cat got your tongue?" Detective Bloch asks Professor David Clarke. His wood chair is uncomfortable, the hanging light bulb above glaring, the smell of cigarette smoke oppressive. "Is that the silence of guilt?"

The suspected cultist squirms and grunts as Marius holds him fast in a grapple hold. Reginald lands a swift upper cut to the man's jaw (3 HP), bloodying his lip and loosening a tooth.

"I don't know Carcosa! Please stop! Take my wallet!" he says, spiting more blood.

The light rain falling forms red-tinged puddles around the struggling men.
Reginald punch damage [1d3] = 3 He's taken 8 HP damage total and is fairly roughed up.

Dr. Francis Morgan:

Frank slowly withdrawals from Edith’s touch and grows uncomfortable as she peers into his eyes. He pats her shoulder platonically as a haggard smile spreads across his face. “Of course I’m here for you, Edith. What can we rely on if we’re unable to support friends in times of need? But you must be mistaken; surely David didn’t kill Asenaith. This investigation has consumed us all, weighted us with stress and uncertainty. Now let’s get out of this deluge, and we can talk more.”

Dr. Clarke:

"I believe I have the right to remain silent if I wish. I will not utter another word about the matter until I am granted a lawyer which can peruse the evidence against me. In the morning Agent Mulder and the B.O.I. will sort all this out and I will be on my way continuing my investigation. Now we can sit here in silence or we can have a nice pinochle game until morning. Which is it?"

"Thank you for being a friend, not just to me but to David too. He needs support going through this terrible time. But I know what I saw Frank," says Edith. "And it scares me. But yes, let's get out of this rain. My place is only a few more minutes away."

Frank looks around the residential neighborhood, not seeing any restaurants or cafes to duck into. Holding the umbrella, Edith walks quickly and closely with Frank down the street.

"So you want to play it that way," retorts Detective Bloch to Dr. David Clarke. "Sure, you can play your pinochle game. Inside the slammer with some new friends. You're under arrest. Let your lawyer and BOI friends spring you tomorrow."

Detective Bloch takes out handcuffs and puts them on Dr. Clarke. He walks the Miskatonic professor out of the interrogation room and to a phone. "You get one call."

Afterwards, two police officers escort him to the basement and put him in a large cell with two other prisoners.

Marius

From the name, Marius instinctively assumes some connection between this "Dark Lady" and the "Dark Pharaoh."

"Where is she, and why is she having you watch us? What are you supposed to be reporting on? Tell us if you want to keep the rest of your teeth, dog!"
