Acme

"Prepare for melee, boys!" Marvin pulls a grenade and hurls it at the clump of the incoming attackers.

Roker knows what "prepare for melee" means. His fingernails get long and claw-like, his hair grows out...you know the routine. It's wolf-man time!

Saul stands, affixes his bayonet to his rifle, and aims at the lead charging IJA soldier.

Elias shakes his head and turns his vector towards the charge. Aiming to take out the ones in front, hoping they might fall and slow down or make the ones behind fall over them.

*I wonder if there is a better quality Katana in that group, if I survive.

'Death Valley' in the plateaus near the base of Mt. Tapotchau in the central part of the island of Saipan at approximately 2:05 PM 25 June, 1944

On a hot day in June, in a narrow valley that had been bitterly fought over for the past few days, a team of mostly U.S. Talents and attached Army soldiers met a 'Banzai' Charge of the last remnants of the Imperial Japanese Army forces holding this valley in close, hand-to-hand combat.....

Major Marvin Acme, the leader of Special Services Team Four, pulled a grenade, primed it and hurled it into the mass of Japanese troops that were drunkenly screaming and racing towards him and his men with bayonet-thrust-forward Rifles or swords in their hands. The spherical weapon bounced once, vanished into the rushing mass of people and then exploded and a trio of the IJA troops flew this way and that, turned into bloody hulks that would never threaten anyone ever again. A tall IJA solider though, eyes aflame with hate and alcohol, screamed and came rushing straight for Acme, his long bayonet aimed towards his chest*......

Corporal Saul Rabinowitz, took out his little used bayonet and affixed it to his M1 Garand as the 'Banzai' Charge raced forward, getting closer and closer to him and his fellow Talents and the Army 'Dog Faces' working with them. His C.O. hurled a 'nade and three IJA troops were taken out and a volley of fire poured out from most of the Army soldiers around him and another half-dozen or so IJA troops fell to the ground. He took aim at a charging IJA Officer or NCO who had a long, slightly curved Katana sword held in both hands and who was rushing towards him, getting really close and CLEARLY intent on chopping him in half with it.....

Chief Petty Officer Elias Tucker took aim through his Springfield Rifle at a small but clearly fearless Japanese solider that was racing forward towards him, having survived Acme's grenade and then the volley of fire from the Army soldiers and who had leveled his long Arisaka Rifle and gleaming bayonet towards him and took a breath and let it go, his mind calculating the range as he rushed closer and closer....'15 yards....12....10....'

Master Chief Fred Roker called upon his Talent Power as he saw the dwindling 'horde' of Japanese troops racing towards them, numbers dwindling due to grenade and then rifle-fire. His body morphed and changed into that of a Wolf-Man and as his nostrils filled with the stinking, sharp scent of drunken, sweating men rushing towards him, his now somewhat beady eyes locked with a pair of Troopers who had bayonets pointed his way and who were rushing directly for him. He let out a howling bellow, hoping to breath in the lovely scent of fear, but the drunk, fanatical soldiers were lacking in that today. Oh well, they were certainly close enough to reach out and touch.....or slash.....or bite......

A little ways away, Riflemen Gurung, his vision still spinning a bit and his sense of balance a bit off, was helped to his feet by some of the 5 soldiers who had come to help him clear out the AT Gun. The sound of weapons fire and a grenade exploding caught their ears and looking over, they saw the rest of SST 4 and the attached Army Platoon coming into hand-to-hand combat with a Banzai charge of about 15....no, maybe 7 or 8....IJA troops after the volley of fire. Even from here, they could see Roker 'Wolf Out' and some of the soldiers whistled and one said, "HOLY SH#T! Glad he's on OUR side!"

OOC: Okay, hand to hand/melee combat is about to begin; those that are aiming (Tucker and Saul) can get a shot off before it's hand to hand time.

Gurung

Gurung will charge the melee, dropping his Enfield just before reaching the first Japanese soldier. As he runs he will activate both his armor and energy Kukri.

Spending Will Points to activate both his talents.

Saul looks at the foliage and terrain around and activates his camouflage talent to match it. He takes careful aim and fires his Garand at the berserk katana-wielding leader, intent on dropping him in his tracks.

Roker howls and throws himself at the throats of the fanatical soldiers.

I can't remember the mechanics of melee with two opponents and trying not to get stabbed in the process, so let's use a luck point if it would help.

Acme

He smiles with joy mixed with envy as he watches Roker and Gurung enter their element. "Have fun."

Marvin draws his blade and prepares to engage the crazed bayonet charger. He hopes to drop low before the rifle and stab upwards with his own blade.

'Death Valley' in the plateaus near the base of Mt. Tapotchau in the central part of the island of Saipan at approximately 2:10 PM 25 June, 1944

The Talents of SST 4 and their attached platoon of Army soldiers met the last members of the IJA troops inhabiting 'Death Valley', who were rushing them in a drunken, banzai charge....so called due to the Japanese scream of 'Banzai!' as they rushed with bayonets or swords at their foes, hoping to meet them in hand to hand combat for one last chance of 'glory'....or more accurately, to 'die with honor' as opposed to being captured and losing said honor.....

Major Acme dropped his Thompson and drew his Sykes-Fairbairn 'Commando' Knife as a maddened Japanese trooper came racing for him with they bayonet on the end of his long Arisaka Rifle stabbing out towards his chest. The veteran Marine adroitly ducked aside and moved close to the man and stabbed out with his knife, cutting the man and causing a scream of pain, but NOT dropping him for good. The wounded IJA solider then lashed out with his rifle butt that cracked his ribs and caused Acme to fall on his butt and let out a grunt of pain as sharp pain exploded into his very breaths*. The IJA solider lifted up his rifle to bring his bayonet stabbing down into Acme yet again when a short, compact solider with scales covering his body and a purple glowing blade in his hand sliced into and almost all the way THRU the solider, who fell in nearly two pieces.....

Gurung took a deep breath, shook away the last cobwebs of the dizziness and activated both his Armored Scales AND his Purple-glowing Khukri blade into his hands and raced forward, catching the other soldiers by surprise as they were just watching the melee. It was a long run, but as he got there, he saw his C.O. Major Acme cut a Trooper with his blade and then get knocked down. The wounded IJA solider was about to stab down again when Gurung got there and he sliced out his Talent Powered weapon and nearly cut the man in half.....

Saul Rabinowitz took a deep breath and forced his entire world to black out all the sounds of screams, firing, clash of blades, etc. from his mind....all the smells/feels of various Talent Powers being activated all around him.....block ALL of it out, except for the IJA Officer with the long sword rushing right for him. Looking through the peep-hole sight, he noted that the man had a triple star Collar Patch of rank insignia....he was a Full Colonel. Letting the breath go, he fired his Garand and the powerful weapon bucked back into his shoulder, the man hit high in the left side of the chest, he staggered forward and fell on his face almost on Saul's Rifle. The man shuddered once and attempted to get up, but then fell down again and never moved again....his long Katana blade hitting the ground right next to the Marine Corporal.....

Elias Tucker stayed 'in the moment', aiming down his Springfield RIfle's barrel, but at this range, forgoing the use of the Scope. As the Japanese solider rushed him, screaming with his Arisaka extended, Tucker fired and the heavy .30-06 round hit the man full in the head, snapping his head back and causing a half-spin before the trooper collapsed to the ground, unmoving. Tucker let go a breath, worked another round into the chamber of his Rifle and looked around....but all was well for the moment. Right next to Rabinowitz was the body of an IJA officer and a long Katana on the ground....DEFINITELY not the standard, low-quality 'modern' weapon that was issued to the Officers and NCOs, but clearly a family heir-loom.....

Fred Roker, now 'Wolfed-Out', leapt at the two Japanese soldiers attacking him with his claws and fangs exposed and ready to rip-and-shred flesh. He knocked one of the bayonet blades aside, roaring in pain as the second one stabbed into his right side**, but keeping his focus on the solider right in front of him and his teeth bit down on his jugular, messily ending THAT trooper. THEN he looked across at the trooper that had stabbed him and he leapt forwards with his claws extended and landed on him with his hands grabbing and stabbing into the solider's chest, bringing a horrible scream from his victim, that he quickly silenced with a vicious chomp of his teeth....

The rest of the little fight was perfunctory and quick....one Army solider went down on the end of a bayonet, but that Trooper was quickly shot to pieces by SSGT Harris's .45 pistol and after the brief, horrifying whirlwind that was the hand-to-hand fight......it was eerily quiet......

*Acme is Wounded, -1D to all actions until Treated.
**Roker: Ditto to the above

Saul lets out a sigh of relief. Getting sliced in two by a razor- sharp katana was not how he wanted to end the war. He took the katana, admired the folded steel blade with its waves-pattern edge, and took the colonel's saya scabbard. A souvenir to send to Dad back in Maryland.

Ok boys, we’re clear. Bastards got one of ours though. Lets regroup and finish clearing the area.

Marvin tries to calm everyone after the recent excitement and get thoughts on the next step.

'Death Valley' in the central part of the island to Flores Point near Tanapag on the North West Coast of the island of Saipan; mid afternoon of 25 June thru late morning of 6 July, 1944

The members of SST 4 and the survivors of the 'Valley Cleaners' Army Platoon all took deep breaths and took a rest after the last ditch, suicidal 'banzai charge' attack of the remnants of the IJA troops in the valley. Saul Rabinowitz made sure to carefully collect the Samurai Sword while some of the other members of SST 4 and the 'Dog Face' Army soldiers took mementoes from the fallen Japanese as well.

After 'coming back' to his normal-vice-Wolf-Man form, Roker called in the fact that they had completed their assignment and a long couple of hours later, they were surrounded by fresh troops and were given orders to fall back to the rear for some much needed R&R....

A wonderful week and a half rest was had by the members of SST 4 as they were fed, had a nice, safe spot to get some sleep and were treated for their wounds and injuries. 6 days in, they were treated to the wonderful sight of Frank Queen; all healed up thanks to another Talent with Healing Powers he found in the Infirmary, returning to duty and offically given orders to join the team. He had even brought 'Gretchen', his modified Lewis Gun with him!

News filtered in and by now, the vast bulk of the island had been taken, though apparently there were reports of some of the Japanese civilians (remember this was a 'home territory' for Japan) throwing their children and then themselves off of cliffs when U.S. personnel got too close. A few had been taken prisoner and apparently they had been told the Americans would butcher them and eat their young......war was DEFINITELY hell.....

Eventually though, all good things must come to an end and at first light on the 6th of July, SST 4 got summoned for a mission....

Rain was sweeping the island from the heavy, dark gray clouds that dominated the skies, though the rain wasn't particularly heavy. A Marine Colonel named Thomas gave them the skinny. "Okay Major; we got a garbled message from the survivors of the Platoon of Marines that were garrisoning Flores Point; a Japanese Navy Float Plane Base we captured a week ago. Somehow, in the middle of the night, the Japanese managed to land an 'Emily' Flying Boat; packed with a Platoon of IJA troops and some Talents and they took the base back, killing most of our fellow Marines that were holding the place."

"A Lieutenant named Mosley says he managed to get half a dozen of his men out, including his Radioman Appleton and they're currently in a ravine about 200 yards from the Town. He says they've got Talents and they are working on modifying the Emily Seaplane they flew in on and they need some backup. You guys are the only Talents in the vicinity right now, so you've got the call. Head up to Flores and link up with Mosely and see what the hell the Nips are up too and stop them. Happy Hunting Major!"

The men of SST 4 gather up their Gear* and a couple of Jeeps are able to take them to within about half a mile from Flores. They then dismount and carefully make their way closer, doing their best to ignore the driving rain pelting them. They see the ravine and calling out that they are friendlies, they make their way over and see a half dozen Marines who mostly look exhausted, miserable and angry. LT Mosley introduces Gunny Campbell; a leathery leatherneck who's CLEARLY been serving in the Corps for at least 20 years; young PFC Appleton, the Radioman and a trio of Rifleman named Waters, Ziering and Falk. Scoping out the blasted base, they also ask about the IJA Talents.

"Well, one of 'em can Fly and another seems to be able to keep some kinda...Bubble...of Silence all around himself and a few troops if they're right next to him. They slipped into our perimeter in the middle of the night, knifing people to death thanks to that bastard. Their leader, we think, can seem to modify machines. That Emily Flying Boat they came in on....it had massive hunks of armor welded on it.....it shouldn't be able to float let alone fly! AND it's quiet. Not sure if they have others.....but they have about 30 or so troops...some with LMGs.....and at least one 'knee mortar'."

"There is no good place for me to set up, all those buildings and barracks make it hard to get a good shot. I say we edge around and some up from the south and work on the plane first and got from there, tonight."

Could I get a barrel replacement and time to re-sight it in? Also a smoke grenade to add to the two frag.

Acme

He makes sure to restock ammo and grenades during the downtime.

Marvin greets the LT with a nod and a handshake. "Marine. You about ready to get some retribution?" He nods in acknowledgment of Elias and his expertise in marksmanship. "Ok. Let's get you in position then. I'd like to know what they have planned here, though. What do you think Saul? Up for getting a closer look?"

What do people think of Saul sneaking up closer to gain intel, while Elias and a spotter move to the south for a better view? Or we could all go south and advance from that direction.
