Investigation #5: Joker, Roy, & Mac: The Haunting of 601 North E Street

Joker
Joker sneezes- twice- then bends close to examine the drawer and its contents- without touching anything in the drawer. If there are multiple items, he'll use his pen to move them around.

Re: Investigation #5: Joker, Roy, & Mac: The Haunting of 601 North E Street
Joker & Jason, after brushing a layer of cobwebs out of the way (we can say you move it with a pen or something) you see two items. One is a old dry book, the edges tattered, the entire thing suffering from a severe state of dry rot. It is tied shut with a simple hemp string. It has no markings on it that you can see. There is also an antique looking small purse that might have been a rich purple velvet at one time, but it is also rotted with age and the dry conditions. There are a few other things you might expect like a few pieces of long dead bug husk, but who knows how long this has been closed?

Gloves! Do someone have gloves?
If Joker gets access to gloves (Latex/nitrile by preference), he'll examine the items more closely.

Luckily, even if you don't have them on you at this moment, there are plenty in the Ecto which are part of the standard uniform.
And we will say you have them tucked in your belt

Also just saw that the pictures did not load from the last post so here you go

Lionel "Freight Train" Williams
Yeah, I'm ok. Just saw something I wished I hadn't. He'll describe what he saw to the others. I know it's not what we came here for, but we should probably bust it, right? Plus, we can say that this was what we found here. We don't need to release all our findings right away if we're still figuring things out, right? Make the mayor happy without having to bury info or lie, and buy some time go over everything.

You've got that eerie feeling.September 10, 2018, 12:40 pm
Unnaturally Cold Inside - Getting a little windy outside
Jason & Joker certainly seem to have found something of note. The velvet purse and leatherbound black book coated in cobwebs and clearly suffering from age and dry rot found in the secret panel in the fireplace. Joker scrambles for gloves to extract and examine them.
Roy spots the closet to the Southwest of the room he is inspecting and decides to check it out. When he looks inside he finds nothing of note with or without the googles.
Mac is investigating the Dining Area again when he hears Lionel retching in the hallway and runs to assist. Lionel assures him he is okay and if both of them look there is still an image of a now faceless woman hanging in the closet. It is no longer screaming but there are moans and gurgles coming from it as it seems to just be... hanging around. I'll see myself out.

Roy having found a closet will check the room just up the hallway that Lionel is spewing in door way to the left just a short way up from the guest room only if he can do so without stepping in sick.

Joker
Joker pulls on his gloves, then sets the drawer on a flat surface. He flicks his Zippo, using it for light. He studies the items where they lie, then begins a more in-depth examination. He ensures that Jason also has a clear view.
IF there is apparent contact between them, (like the cord from the book lying across the pouch, for instance) he'll use a jumper wire to maintain that contact while examining the items individually.
IF there is NOT any contact, he'll make sure they stay separated.
He examines the pouch/purse first. Visual, then PKE, then physical exam. Brains:5 [4d6] = 16 ghost [1d6] = 5
Joker, given his background and training, is treating these items like components of a machine.

Mac and Lionel are debating busting the ghost in the closet that hangs groaning and faceless as Roy makes his way into the hallway. About the time that Roy could get in view, the ghost dissolves in a cloud of vapors that quickly disappears as if nothing from ever there.
Joker and Jason continue to investigate the items they found in the hidden panel of the fireplace. Joker can certainly tell there is a link between the items and the energies that seem to be coursing through the house and property. They are in no way physically tied together, only the book is bound shut with the hemp string.
The purse is very old. Definitely is velvet but it is suffering from severe rot. Once the zippo gets close to the items there is a definite change in the air, and like a cold sigh, blows out the flame. Does he open the purse?
Jason will quickly recognize what this is. The Bag is what is called a Hex Bag. This is an item sometimes used by people of the occult will use for personal protection from antagonistic energies. They are often filled with personal items not unlike a native American medicine bag, all of which are used to focus personal energies and intents. It is rare, but not unheard of for them to be stashed away in homes for the same effect.
The book is another matter. It appears plain other than it's age and the string holding it closed. It does however pulse with the same energies as the Hex Bag.
Map
Only notable changes are Roy joins Mac & Lionel in the Hallway, the bathroom is visible to him and seems fairly typical and the disappearance of the ghost in the closet.

Joker
Joker handles the objects carefully- as if they were glass (or full of nitroglycerin). He returns the purse to the drawer unopened when the lighter goes out, and re-lights the Zippo.
I think it would be bad to open the bag- but I am very curious about the contents of the book. What do think, Jason?

I don't know too much about opening it up, usually these kinds of totems ward off evil. He looks around at the house, I dont know if it is working, what opening it would do. He will start thumbing through the first few pages of the book to see if there are any immediate connections to the house or case.

Huh. Well, guess that makes the choice for us. When the ghost disappears, Lionel will continue down the hallway before going out the door to the patio.

Roy shrugs his shoulders and says "Well I guess I gotta either go upstairs or check the basement if there is one." and he heads for the stairs unless there is any other doors left in the hallway. guessing there is no way to enter that black area between the guest room, living room, hallway and stairs?

Mac keeps an eye on Lionel to make sure he is okay and follows him through the large guestroom to the south and out to the patio in the back yard. They can see the shed/root cellar Mac explored earlier and the overgrown gardens in the back.
Go ahead and each of you give me 2 cool rolls.
Meanwhile Roy makes his way around the hall and back to the stairs.
You passed the black space and it was just a run of the mill bathroom. Nothing special going on there
Joker and Jason continue to study the Hex Bag & Book. Joker will find that each time he tries to light his zippo it is promptly blown out by a frigid rouge breeze in the room. Once Jason unties the hemp string, it falls apart into dust as the string gives away. There is also a well-timed loud crack of thunder. When he opens it up, at first it looks like a journal at first but more and more it becomes clear Jason is looking at a spellbook. The notes are littered with symbols for wards, summoning, notes on stars, the moon, and planets. There is a heavy emphasis on protection and home remedies.
Inside the book:
Everyone's PKE goes off and you can see there has been a major energy shift.
Map
Do you like it better if I include the previously explored Maps of each level or would you rather I keep them individual?
Also EDIT: I just realized Lionel and therefore also Mac are out on the Patio, so please excuse the map for now until I can fix this later. Sorry for the boo-boo.

Joker
After the second attempt, Joker will grumble softly and put the Zippo away. I'd rather you... he says, then stops as Jason has already opened the book.
Brains roll (+1 BP) [5d6] = 17 ghost [1d6] = 5
When the PKE surges, Joker starts tweaking his controls to see if he can localize the source. He's pretty sure it's the book.
