Fitz's disappointment about the grey water lasts about as long as it takes Sir Narramore to put him back down. He's off toward another bubbling pit. "I'm sure we'll find some type of goop if we keep poking around in the pits. Great idea for bringing the pole along, Drakkar. Reminds me of a time I saw my distant cousin, on my father's side, try to vault over a large crevice in a place called Chestnut Ridge. He had a pole he cut from my aunt Tilly's cherry tree and he figured he could just spring over the crack...well...he popped his cherry pole and down he went...never heard from him again. Ah well, such is the way of life I guess, right fellas?"

Dexter adjusts his rope as his masked-up friends continue traveling deeper and deeper into the rocky clearing. Now about 4-500 yards away, the halfling wonders if he should have brought more rope. Max doesn't answer his inquiry about the gnome tea as he too watches the others disappear into the steamy desolation.

Narramore, Drakkar, and Fitz continue heading further towards the center of the clearing, hoping to find some of the grey goo they seek. They pass another empty crater and then another with more of the grey water, before they find a new oddity. The fifth pit they check is not like the others. In fact, there is nothing in this pit. And when I say nothing......

The pit looks like all the others when studied from the outside, a rough, uneven, rocky crater in similar ground. But the inside of this one is a black void of absolute nothingness. There is no sign of anything moving or steaming, and there is no noise at all coming from the black void. The blackness is complete, filling the entire surface of the inside of the pit. The entire thing gives off an unwholesome alien vibe that doesn't sit well with the dwarf at all.

"What the hells is this now? That dont look nuthin like grey goop either. Still care for another dangle, master gnome?"

Sir William Narramore

The paladin recoils from the unnatural blackness and turns away. "Never seen such a thing. This bears investigation," he remarks. "But we are too few and, speaking for myself, too uncertain of the terrain to risk delving too deeply." He looks around for other pits which might contain the goop. "I'm for finishing our mission and going home. Perhaps there we might recruit others more knowledgeable on this...void and return to reveal what lies within."

He moves purposefully away from the strange place, seeking their elusive grey goop.

Max

Max follows Dexter. Holding the end of the rope, just in case anyone falls in.

Doesn't look like they are having much luck. Must be dries up. I hope no one falls in that stuff, it might kill them. It must be a heavily volcanic area. We saw lots of black rock and volcano debris when we circles the island.

Fitz eyeballs the black pit and shakes his head. "I'd rather not dangle over that, if it's all the same to you fellas."
Typical of inquisitive Gnome behavior, Fitz picks up a rock and tosses it in the black pit.
"How do ya think this was made? And what made it? It sure gives off a weird feeling, doesn't it?"

Though Max and Dex are nowhere near the others in the group, they continue to prepare for a long distance rescue. The wizard tells the halfling about the things he's seen as his transport circumnavigated the entire island, but the young thief doesn't seem interested in those facts. In fact, he says nothing at all for some time.

Fitz has no intentions of being dangled over the strange black void, but he has no qualms about tossing a rock into it. Once his projectile enters the concerning blackness, it simply disappears into it without making a ripple on the surface or any sound whatsoever. The groups holy warrior wants nothing more to do with this oddity until they can learn more about it.

He moves away from the unnatural find, putting even more distance in between the trio and the pair waiting near the jungle's edge. The next pit the paladin finds has more of the grey, watery liquid in it, though this liquid seems a bit thicker than the last. Perhaps the splinter group is getting close to their target after all?

Draakar adjusts and fiddles with the piece of cloth loosely covering his extremely hairy face. "These damn masks are hard ta get used to, eh fellas?"

"Should we try scooping some of this stuff out, or move along to the next pit?"

Wisdom check (8): [4d6] = 9

Fitz shrugs his shoulders and says, "Fine by me. Just don't drop me."

Sir William Narramore

The knight waves for those left behind, hoping they'll rejoin the party in case their strength is required. "Join us, hey? We've not died just yet, lads," he says with a smile, emphasizing the "yet."

He frowns at the watery goop. "Surely it'll thicken up somewhere," he remarks as he pushes farther ahead.

[4d6] = 14

Wisdom is 13. Sigh. Failed by a point.

Seeing Sir William wave them on, Dexter says with a grin, "OK, looks like they don't need rescuing after all. Nice to be wrong for a change." He does not untie the harness, but merely puts the entire coil over his shoulder. He takes one of his two small sacks and quickly cuts a pair of rough face masks, wetting them slightly from one of his water skins. He ties one on and hands the other to Max. "Ready?" he asks, looking to Max. Then he heads for the rest of the company.

Max puts the face mask on and follows Dexter into the smelly pit area.

Alright let's do this. Hopefully we all go home.

While Narramore holds Fitz over this new pit, the gnome tries to scoop a little of the grey water into a container, finding it more liquid than goo. In the meantime, Dex and Max don some moist face coverings and head in to meet up with the others.

Drakkar seems to be staring off towards the center of the vast clearing, and when the stragglers arrive, Max cant help but follow the dwarves eyes, wondering what he might be looking for. (Can I get a Hard Int check from Max, please?)

Dexter sees a pit filled with what appears to be filmy water, followed by another empty pit, followed by the pit his group is at now. He too agrees that the watery substance doesn't quite fit the description they were given by Nallissa.

The one thing Fitz does notice is that the watery contents of this pit seems a bit warmer that the last one he was dangled over.

What are you looking at Drakkar? You see something?

Puts his hand above his eyes to block the sun.

Fitz can feel the rush of blood to his head and although he likes it, he knows his Ma would fuss at him if she could see him, so he asks to be put down and says the pool still doesn't look like the goop we need.

Dexter Broadleaf

Dexter closes as quickly as he can on Sir William. "Like I was telling Fitz, it's nice to be wrong occasionally. But, I still don't think we should breath this stuff for very long." Once again craning his neck to look up to the Paladin, he adds, "Normally, I'm completely against splitting up, but the ground is flat, we can see for a considerable distance, and we're looking for something right around here. I don't think it would be a bad thing, as long as we stay in sight of each other."

Dexter and Max eventually catch up to the others as Fitz asks to be set back on his feet, not yet certain if this is really the goop they are looking for. The halfling futzes with his face covering, convinced that they should still limit their time in this strange place. He suggests the group split up, but stay within sight of each other, so they can cover more ground in a shorter amount of time.

Drakkar continues to stare off into the distance, causing Max to look in that direction as well. The mage starts to see movement about a mile beyond their current position off the edge of the jungle. The shapes are small and appear very drab in color against their smokey background. Once the dwarf points it the direction of the movement, confirming what Max has spotted, the others start to see them as well. Several small, grey shapes meander about the steaming pits towards the center of this massive rocky clearing. "Ye think whatever that is out there will know where we can find this grey slop we be seekin?"

Max

I don't know. I am thinking we should slowly move to the edge of the pits closer to the cover of the jungle. We may be in for a fight and I have no desire to fight something out here around these pits. It would be to easy to fall in one.

Dex here is your rope back. I am going to take cover closer to the tree line.

He squats down as is trying to hide and starts to pick his way back to the closest forest edge. While moving his hand to his belt pouch to draw forth his sling and a bullet.

Sir William Narramore

"I hesitate to imagine that any creature we encounter in this forsaken place would have good intentions." He ensures himself that his crossbow is easy to reach and his sword loose in the scabbard.

"Best be ready for the worst and hope for a pleasant surprise." He looks at the others. "They're bound to spot us while we go about our errand. There's no cover out here, and if we can see them--small as they are--they can most assuredly see us. And I have a feeling that our objective lies in that direction, anyway," he adds. "None of these pits nearby seem to have what we need."

He glances at the others. "Shall we approach?"

Fitz squints to see the approaching figures and his heart starts beating faster than normal...and not in a good way.
He checks his darts and also rummages through his pouches to make sure he has everything ready for a conflict.

He waits with his friends, wondering what will happen.

Just to clarify, Dex never gave Max his rope. He did give him a wet mask to help with the fumes.

Dexter Broadleaf

Dex looks up at Sir William once more. "I'll let you make the call, Sir William, if you think a parlay is in order."

The Halfling deliberately keeps his sword sheathed and his hand clear of it. But his sling needs only to be allowed to fall from his wrist and unwrap to be deployed. "Don't worry, Fitz," he says. "Old tin pants here is such an obvious target, and four times our size, nobody is going to attack us."
