Yeeha, 5 successes, and it will only have 3D to roll because of the extra -1D we gave it.

Darn, I completely forgot about using my Early Riser trait.

Re: OOC Discussion (Session 3)
In retrospect, I should have opted to Defend as the final action in this round. Sorry Bill. We'll see how it works out in the compromise.
At this point, there's no reason to not tap his nature again considering his life is on the line. And the creature no longer has +1 helping die, and my helmet offers -1s, negating the tentacle effect.

You have leather armor, too! Not a guarantee, but there's a chance.

Re: OOC Discussion (Session 3)
There's a reasonable chance you'll survive. I think it only has 2 hit points left, so you've done enough to kill it.
I think, for it to kill you in mutually-assured-destruction, it would need to score 3 hits with 4 dice, and you have a definite -1s to it because of your helmet, and a reasonable chance of negating a second hit with your armor, so it would probably need to score all four hits to do you in. And if you do fall, hopefully Aoife and Berry hear you and rush in to drag our bodies back into the light. *hint* *hint*

It's a good example of where the Strider having a Whip as a unique weapon would have helped Thag... changing independent attacks to versus would have saved him!

Re: OOC Discussion (Session 3)
Yeah, possibly. I didn't know the combat system very well, and I wanted to pattern my character more after a LotR Ranger of the North than an Indiana Jones type adventurer.Marullus wrote:It's a good example of where the Strider having a Whip as a unique weapon would have helped Thag... changing independent attacks to versus would have saved him!
Needless to say, for an rpg convention I'm going to in February where I've decided to run a Torchbearer game, I'm already given one of the pre-generated characters for the game a whip.

Rusty, roll for Rabon's armor. <Crosses fingers>

Re: OOC Discussion (Session 3)
That's awesome you're going to run a one-off TB game. Thanks for helping spread this game.
For what it's worth I've played TB a couple-few times and still don't know the combat system (or any of the rules, for that matter) very well. I spent 30 minutes this morning trying to figure out my post - Tapped Nature, armor, Versus tests vs Independent Tests...
Saved!
Armore Save [1d6] = 4
Maybe Thag can come back as a Death Knight! (Though a less gruesome character might be easier to get along with.)

Re: OOC Discussion (Session 3)
Rabon and Thag are both gravely injured. Weirdly, they don't get the Injured condition, but they each lose a point of base Nature and lose a Trait as well.

Also, somebody should probably pull that thing off of Thag's face and kill it.

Re: OOC Discussion (Session 3)
Well, that puts my maximum Nature at 2, so I guess that would make it easier to learn new stuff. Does it also drop the current Nature, which is currently 2, down to a 1?
I could drop the Early-Riser trait.
Is there a way to recover lost traits?
I know you can recover lost Nature over the winter, or by giving the prologue for the next adventure. But how do you raise your Nature. I see on page 134 where it says "If Nature advances to 7 and remains at that rating at the end of the current session..."; but where does it say how Nature is increased? Does it increase like any other skill, passes = level and fails = level-1?
Since we won the fight, do we both gets a Pass on our Fighter skills? Or because I was knocked out do I get a Fail and Rabon gets a Pass?

Re: OOC Discussion (Session 3)
That's weird. I don't have much experience in drastic compromise, though. Can you explain/cite how this worked out?Ludanto wrote:Rabon and Thag are both gravely injured. Weirdly, they don't get the Injured condition, but they each lose a point of base Nature and lose a Trait as well.
Re: OOC Discussion (Session 3)
Maybe nightmares keep Thag from being rested enough to Rise Early.
No, if your current Nature is less than your maximum, it doesn't change.
Nature advances like a skill.
You can get new Traits in Winter, but you can't really control what you get.
Rabon gets a successful Health test, but all of the other tests were unopposed, so no advancement. Sorry.
The compromise was in the list for "killing is my business". A lesser compromise was "injured and exhausted", which was easier to understand, but was in the "moderate" compromise list. It's ok, though. Just a game.
I'm glad you guys survived. I would have felt bad otherwise.

Re: OOC Discussion (Session 3)
Reading the section on Conflicts, pages 73 & 74.Marullus wrote:That's weird. I don't have much experience in drastic compromise, though. Did we win, or did we tie? I think we won, barely, then we apply Killing is my Business to the monsters, which is what happened.
Major Compromise: Lost all but a few. The winner's disposition is reduced to just a few points. I believe Rabon at a single hit point left? Only because his armour and helmet worked.
On page 74, there are several options for each compromise, but no instructions on how to apply them, so it's GM prerogative.
Under "if you lose but earn a major compromise" one of the options is you are killed but badly injure your opponent, reduce his Nature and remove a trait. Do both opponents get that since they were both in the fight, or would it make sense that only the one knocked out of the fight get it? It says gravely injured (but not Injured), even though there appears to be a distinct, Ludanto is saying we're not injured, at least not physically. I would think you get the Injured condition, or is losing a Trait and Nature insult enough?
I guess Ludanto could have triggered "Left for dead, but survive, reduce Circles and Resource (I assume for monsters it would be Nature). We chopped off a couple limbs and left it for dead, but after we leave it stirs to life, crawls off into a corner, and plots REVENGE!
Or
"Killed but cause massive collateral damage - its death throes bring down the unstable roof"
Or
"You are killed, but you kill all but one of your opponents". No., we don't want that. lol

Re: OOC Discussion (Session 3)
You didn't say Rabon dropped or otherwise broke the lantern, so we're assuming it's still lit, clutched in Rabon's hand as he's groaning. We're both "out of it", so Berry or Aoife could run in and drag us out using the lantern as his light source.
Eidt: no, nix that, I think it burned out right after the fight, which was the third test. Don't we have a second lantern? i thought I had one?

Re: OOC Discussion (Session 3)
Basically. While you're obviously injured, you're just not Injured.
Also, I was just putting that the lantern dropped when you posted. So I guess you win. The lantern keeps lanterning!
Except that it then burns out.
