The Intruding Karagonian Soldier Contingent! (TOD:0643)

Surprise Roll

~ The soldier Dat moves into the cave and straight towards his unconscious mate lying by the smoldering fire pit. He does not see Bogdan or Ulrich until it's too late...

Realizing that his ruse worked and that the soldier is entering the cave, Bogdan quickly lets go of his two spears resting on the cave floor and opts instead to use his specialized weapon of choice. He spins up and away from the cave wall, drawing his masterwork longsword in one fluid motion and swinging it with a most malevolent intent. The nearly razor sharp blade slices through the man's chain armor and deep into his left shoulder area (7dam).

Ulrich follows suit, stepping away from the other side of the cave wall and swinging his mace with similar malefic designs. The well-cared for blunt weapon strikes the soldier hard on his upper right arm and chest (4dam) with loud thud!

"Ahh!" the poor bloke chokes out as he staggers under the combined assault and falls backward. The act of doing so gives him just enough room to be missed by the big Half-orc's secondary swing, which slices the damp cave air in twain not more than inches from his wide-eyed visage!

~ Meanwhile, outside the cave, Emm is the first of those lying in waiting to take action...

"Keep one alive!" she hisses, as she breaks cover on the far eastern side of the bluff by the cliff and scampers up onto the hill, moving directly towards the two soldiers carrying their pole-suspended cage cargo to close the distance...

The two encumbered marines reach the last switchback on the trail above, right where the first one stopped and called down to the cave. They don't see the druidess at first but when they change direction and continue down towards the bluff, the one in the lead spots her moving towards them.

"What the..." the man exalts when he sees her and holds up. Without letting go of the pole, he reaches for his loaded heavy crossbow hanging across his chest on it's harness. The soldier behind him pushes forward a bit more before realizing he's stopped, which causes him to stumble and lose his grip on the ranged weapon!

The soldier's stumble is exactly what Emm was hoping for as she covers the remaining distance needed to get into spell range. Already humming the magical tune and making a somatic motion with her free hand whilst gripping a sprig of mistletoe in the other, she casts her Entangle spell. The grass, weeds and plants in a 20 foot radius along the tight trail spring to life and ensnare the two wide-eyed Karagonian marines!

OOC: okay guys, we'll consider that the above actions take place in the 1st melee round, which is sort of a surprise round in the fact that the soldiers were caught off guard and did not have the ability to react immediately. I'll go ahead and make a saving throw for the 2 that were just entangled!

Lauranna moves as far as she can without leaving cover, watching further up the trail for any more movement.

Emm continues her course toward the duo carrying the poled cage, stopping just outside the sphere of influence of her spell. She hefts her spear, the business end directed toward the fellow who first spotted her, so she can see past them both to keep an eye on the path behind them. The Lieutenant! Where is he? She hisses from between gritted teeth. Quietly, or my garden will strangle you!

Ulrich swings again with his mace.

The Intruding Karagonian Soldier Contingent! Round 2 (TOD:0644)

~ The party pushes the pace and continue to apply their plan with all due haste...

Before the already moderately wounded soldier Dat can even pull his blade to defend himself, let alone call out a warning to his mates, the two Karagonian escapees step up and let him have it again. Bogdan impales him to the cave floor through the stomach with a vicious downward thrust (10dam) and Ulrich brings his mace down on the poor bloke's helm (nat20;10dam). The sickening sound of metal and skull being crushed echoes dully throughout the front of the cave and both the fighter and cleric know he's finished...

~ Outside on the trail in the early light of dawn, the two soldiers are caught up in the druid's magics...

Emm continues to move across the hillside toward the two entangled soldiers on the trail. Down on the bluff, Lauranna readjusts her position within the cover of the bushes to better see up the trail but stays low in an effort to remain out of sight. Sorel and Caelvanna do not yet reveal themselves...

The druidess reequips her already-bloodied spear and comes to a halt just outside the area of effect of her entangle spell. She hefts it in a ready position and drills a venomous gaze into the first soldier. He stares at her in wide-eyed disbelief as she demands to know where their lieutenant is, detailing he'll suffer a deadly dose of floracide if he doesn't give it up. Both men initially appear to be held in place by the spell until suddenly the one in front lets go of the pole and reaches for his loaded crossbow!

OOC: okay, at this point, everyone outside watching can see that the 1st soldier (#2) made his saving throw (17), so he's not completely held by Emm's entangle spell and will be attempting to make a ranged attack on her instead of giving in to her request. The soldier behind him (#3) appears completely held and although he's struggling, cannot move or attack.

Lauranna slowly moves towards Emm's position, stay low and trying to maintain cover as best she can.

Bogdan leaves the cave and rushes to pose a direct threat to the entangled soldiers, knowing he can easily move through the entangle spell's area of effect. He goes for the soldier posing a threat first.

The young Druid shakes her head in resignation. Are all Karagonian soldiers foolish? She steps aside so Bog can do what he does best, keeping her shield in between herself and the crossbow. We'll try the one at the rear next.

Ulrich stays in the cave, not wanting to get stuck in the entangling vegetation. He'll keep an eye on the unconscious wounded soldier. His eyes occasionally wander toward the back of the cave, where the mysterious egg lay.

If he is able to attack, Bog does so with his Karagonian longsword...

~ The party continues to drive the initiative bus...

Bogdan emerges from the cave and into the breaking dawn with a bloody blade and look of purpose. He turns right(west) and moves quickly towards the trail to get up to where the entangled action is commencing...

As soon as he hits the trail and begins ascending, Lauranna breaks cover and begins to move up the rougher hillside to the right(east) of the trail and towards Emm. The magic-user/thief is staying very low and using a route that affords her at least some kind of cover from a random rock here or bush there. Ulrich does not emerge from the cave to follow either of them and so remains out of sight...

~ Seeing the soldier she just demanded information from reject her query and try to fight, Emm harrumphs heavily and asks another question that's actually more of a statement on the apparent low intellectual requirements of the Karagonian military. She shakes her head with an incredulous look and lifting her shield for cover, begins to back away from the edge of spells effects to give her approaching team member a clear path. As she does so, the soldier finally shakes off his end of the cage pole he tried to drop and takes up his crossbow...

Bog sees his target and moves as fast as he possibly can in his banded armor, but there is no way he's going to make the near 80 foot remaining distance in time. The soldier acknowledges the emergence of the big, armored swordsman moving on him. He struggles against the grabbing flora to bring his weapon up to a fire position...

Damn! exalts an eastern-accented voice in rough common from the western side of the bluff as a large bush erupts into a standing Sorel who's already aiming his loaded, taut bow. The archer specialist lets fly with his first arrow and it streaks up to impact the wooden cage heavily with an audible twuunk!
The entangled marine flinches in surprise and looks over to see where the incoming came from. When he sights the enemy archer, he tries to change targets again. All the while, Bog continues to close the distance...

Sorel curses something under his breath and lets fly again. The easterner's flight arrow impales the man in the upper right leg and sinks most of the way in (7dam). He cries out in pain and tries to shake it off so he can shoot back. All the while Bog's getting closer...

Just as the wounded Karagonian marine is taking aim to return fire, Sorel lets fly with his third (last) arrow. His nerves now calm and aim steady, the Half-elf easterner makes a near perfect shot that impales the man through the throat (12dam) and comes to rest halfway out the back of his armored collar! The soldier's eyes go wide as he realizes he's been hit again, this time much more seriously, and he drops his weapon to grasp at his throat. Blood sprays violently from the wound and he stumbles but is somehow still alive! Bog is almost there to put the icing on the cake, and has actually crossed into the entangle spell's area of effect with no ill effect when there's a bright burst of fire from above...

Streaking down the hillside from the next bluff above with a deep, unsettling drone is a ball of fire that impacts right on Sorel's position with a tremendous explosion (25dam*)! The Half-elf easterner crumbles into the burnt, smoking circle of bushes, bluff and hillside...

Counting on not being targeted with a spell that would affect a large area because of the remaining soldier and the cargo, Bog continues with his action of ending the life of the partially entangled soldier. Better to have just a magic user to deal with than a magic user and an archer.

Tho surprised and horrified at the explosion that took Sorel, Emm makes no sound and hugs the trail, peering upward toward to catch a glimpse of the magic's origin. If she spots someone, and they happen to be within range, she will answer with fire of her own. If not, she will again seek cover within available foliage.

Lauranna carefully moves to gain more cover, trying to get to the cliff and out of the line of sight.
