Everyday Life in Beachtown

Daisy
Daisy has been watching these two argue with growing amazement and anger
Both of ya'll, shut the hells up! We're all scared, but we cain't fight among ourselves. Ah don't know too many dwarfs, but the ones Ah do know are tough, gruff, independent folks who'd no more take slaves than they would flap their arms and fly!
Princess, open your mind to the possibility these folks are just BAD, and can't be dealt with like honorable people. Dexter, Ah'll thank you to keep a civil tounge in your head when we're in Council- hard words just bring more hard words.
Now: Dexter, it may take months to contact the folks back home- that's why it's our second step. If you will, write to whoever ya'll know that might be able to shine some light on this mess. Arvoreen willing, we'll have the problem fixed before you get an answer.
Mister Liam- you were already goin' to scout the area around the river and above the cliffs. Make that happen as soon as possible. Ah'm going to visit Powstap and the locals. Let's talk logistics.

This post will now be edited by the DM to remove the ongoing antagonistic comments. If you think you are being cute by continuing to take shots at another player who already said they wont respond to you, I assure you I am not amused. Can we stop this nonsense now, please? The rest of us in the game don't appreciate it!!!
Dexter Broadleaf
Speaking to Daisy away from the others, Dexter's demeanor returns to normal. "I'm sorry if I disrupted the purposes of the meeting. He shakes his head, not allowing the thoughts to get the better of him again. "There is another matter that I would like to speak with you, Glansandi, and perhaps Liam about. It's not exactly a threat to the community, but something dangerous, of which everyone needs to be aware."
"And, of course I'll write a letter," he continues. "I think my father would be the best place to start. Our shipyard provides the Prince with his riverine fleet, and he can get the Prince's ear when needs be. But I think the talk between the three of us should come first."
"There is no spoon."
Re: Everyday Life in Beachtown
Jaxsen Reiter
Jaxsen watches, apparently unperturbed, as folks argue and leave. He admires the way Daisy once again seizes control and begins to re-focus the meeting. After seeing the Stoneguts up close in their own homes, he knows he will have nothing to do with any further negotiations with them. But other than offer the advice he has already given, he will not try to convince others not to walk into that particular spiderweb. Those efforts seem fraught with dissension for the hive.
Still a bit fatigued from his three days of exertions, and not having been given any new tasks, he decides the toiling that would be best for himself right now would be upkeep of Liam's hives once more. He misses the hum and activity, and an urge to once again make sure they are safe. This, he feels, will both be healing for him and appease his Queen's desire that he stay busy.

Liam
Of course, Constable. Forgive me if I came off as impatient. I have not yet grown into my patience yet. he says in self-deprecating jest.
He nods. So... action 1 we can agree to take... scout the Stoneguts. He takes out a clean sheet of paper and makes a note. Constable, may I consider your comment an official seconding of this motion? Assuming he does: All in favor? Liam holds up his hand.
Liam stands up. We had the remainder of a group return a couple of days ago reporting they found good soil and unoccupied land across the river that is rich with plant life and with cliffs along the easter edge. They also mentioned there were large bugs, which is expected. I believe we have three benefits to shifting there right now. 1) and now most urgent, we would put distance between us and the Stoneguts, and the river would offer some protection from any force they sent to us later. I will not pretend that it is a perfect defense, but just like the lock on the door of a home, it is meant to slow them down more than stop them. 2) Rich soil means potential for better crops. We are hurting for food, and a few capable farmers could get that fast-tracked as we phase-in. I'll come back to that in a minute. 3) And Marge can attest to the benefit of this, we will be directed at our freshwater source. This will also make it more possible to directly irrigate our crops.
The phasing plan that Mayor Daisy and myself have discussed is as such: We begin with moving a contingency of volunteer farmers and laborers with a stock of seedlings and the livestock... who are suffering under the conditions of the beach. We will try to establish the beginnings of a new settlement, preparing the first set of crops and housing while preparing the land in general for the rest of the town. Part of this will likely be recruiting some more martial townsfolk and adventurers to help clear out preditors and pest. It is also hoped that while clearing the bamboo and trees there that we can have skilled hands making more thought out and quality housing.
Phase 2 will be a little more drawn out, as townsfolk are able, we will move them over to the new site. Part of this will also be the dismantling of current structures as they become unoccupied, to be used as further building materials at the new site.
Phase 3 would be the final clearing out of materials. Theoretically, most, hopefully all, citizens will be at the new and improved site, and we can work on taking down and transferring the larger structures like the common house, towers, etc. If for no other reason than the practicality of using those materials and also now to make sure the Stoneguts do not claims them.
Captain Bing was docking in this area just offshore. So the water there is plenty deep for a shift like Captain Quarks. We will need to build a new dock, but that is not an impossible task. I would think this would preferably be a Phase 2 project. And eventually, I would think we would dismantle the one here as well.
I know this will seem premature, but just to make it official that we are considering this plan, or at least what will be a properly deliberated and modified version of it, will be moving forward, officially May I have a second?
How is that coming along?
Will edit according to vote etc, but for expedience, I will start the list now.

Liam jots more notes. Let us not forget the Phanatons. Jaxsen? you mentioned at one time you were figuring out their language?
How is that coming along?
Liam looks up from his note writing. My friend, you sit among the most trusted people of this town. We can all take a vow of confidentiality on the matter if we need to, but know that anything you say to me in private that has to do with the safety and well-being of the town and its people will most assuredly be shared here eventually. I believe it best we come out with it now rather than later.

- 2) Begin Phase 1 of moving the town to the new site.

The Princess
She slows, allowing Sir Narramore to catch her. "Greetings, Sir Narramore. I daresay my opinion is no longer wanted. The decision is up to the Mayor, and I don't envy her. Heavy is the head and all, you know?"
Walking on with no particular destination, she muses "Such a shame, really. This settlement. Full of strong people, naive maybe, but strong. Starting a war against those dwarves is a task for an army, not farmers." She sighs and keeps walking. "But you speak of diplomacy. Perhaps you could send a written message with a dwarf from their boat. Ask to meet at the shore and discuss a peaceful resolution. Many innocents will die if fighting starts, you know that."
"But what of you, you never did reveal what brought you to this place." She smiles sadly at him then looks wistfully across the sea.

Re: Everyday Life in Beachtown
Sir William Narramore
Narramore nods slowly. "Daisy will make decisions for Beachtown, along with the others, yes. And I'm sure they'll be fine ones." His brow furrows. "But some of my goals here are mine alone, and my decisions regarding my own actions may differ widely from the common goals of the village folk and other denizens here." He sends her a keen look. "As will some of yours, I imagine."
He sweeps the local terrain with an inquisitive gaze. "I didn't want to say so publicly, but I fear the worst. These people can't possibly defend themselves against..." He gestures back in the direction of the Stonegut camp. "Heavily armored, armed to the teeth, and riding great beasts. Seasoned fighters accustomed to bloodshed. How do you defeat that with farmers and tree-folk?" The knight shakes his head.
"Perhaps I'm just tired and feeling defeated after coming so near to death on the trail." Narramore rakes a hand through his hair and shrugs massive shoulders. "I'll do all that I'm able to help train those who want to fight. And protect those who can't fight back. They're good people."
"What brings me here?" He stops and regards the weary princess in silence. "I came to bring order and the wisdom of the divine to this benighted place..." Sir William announces in a stilted voice and then pauses, allowing the words to hang in the air between them before he dissolves into laughter. "Or so I told myself. I wish my motives were so noble. To be honest, my true motivation was adventure. I wanted away from the monastery and my duties. Away from schedules and superiors. Expectations. I wanted to live by my sword and my wits for a time and take my own measure."
Narramore pulls a rueful smile. "I'm a fraud, highness. But I'm working on it. The gods haven't finished with me yet. Nor I them." He follows her far-seeing gaze across the foam-crested waves. For a long moment, the big man is silent. When he finally does speak, the words are almost snatched away upon a gust of wind which gallops inland atop the sea-swells. "What do you seek here?"

Daisy nods as Liam makes his list. You seem to have a good head for organizing these things, Liam- Ah'm gonna let you spearhead the Big Move. Given the Dwarfs, and the trouble with them, it needs to happen as quickly as possible. So you have my second- and my 'Aye' vote.
She sags a bit when Dexter mentions 'something else'. Ah'm almost afraid to hear this, Dexter. She smiles when she says it.

Marge takes the floor again, nodding at all the suggestions made so far.
"I agree with almost everything mentioned so far."
"We cant expect to hold our own against the dang dwarves, or even the Treefolk fer that matter. I guess after hearing about the mishap with the scouting crew, I am finally convinced enough that it is time to rethink this location. We really need to move. I just hope it aint already too late."
"I also heard there is better soil and an easier area to defend near the river. Perhaps that old sea cave could work out as a temporary shelter while we construct the new buildings?"

Liam jots notes as about this as well, noting the Aye vote, and adding the suggestion of using the cave. That does sounds like a good temporary shelter. Did not one of the returning party members mention they had used it? Didn't they also caution about going too far back though?OGRE MAGE wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 1:43 pm Marge takes the floor again, nodding at all the suggestions made so far.

Apparently, the tentacle monster lurks in the back of the cave? Do we have any ideas on how to secure it or do we want that to be something we address independently once we... that is the first moving party, gets there?
How large a group do we want to start with? Joe and I will go for certain. I'm not looking forward to transferring all the livestock much less corralling them until we can secure a set of pens for them. We also need to keep in mind that we will need protection while there, so we will need not just farmers but a few hardier folks for safety as well. If we move forward with this, which so far it seems we are, we need to assume all possible needs to make is successful. he sits back down.

Daisy waits a minute, leaving time for any further discussion.
All right, ya'll. Let's get this moving. Liam, Ah wish Ah could tag along, but my place has to be here for now.
Ah'd suggest you set up some sort of system for gettin' across the river, too. Maybe a raft and a guide rope?
Daisy waits for Dexter to pass on his 'bad news'.

I apologize once again here folks! (seems like I have been doing that a lot lately)
I think I will put this action on hold until we can be sure who is still with us.
Please feel free to continue roleplaying ideas off each other, but stand by on making actions until I can figure out what is actually going on with the characters involved with this.
Thanks!

Liam nods. Good idea, we will make it a point to scout a good crossing up river from the beach and set up a ferry system. As a matter of fact that might be good to make a priority before trying to move livestock come to think of it. I'll work that out with Joe and whomever we get to volunteer for the first phase.

The Princess
Not pushing action ahead, just continuing the conversation with Narramore.
"You're not a fraud to me, Sir Knight. I saw your actions on the trail. Even if someone wanted a break from responsibility, it never really leaves you, does it?"
She turns from the sea and wipes away some dust from her eyes. "I'm looking for someone, which is a hopelessly romantic thing to say, but yeah. I think they came here." She sighs and straightens herself. "In the meantime, I was hoping to make use of the opportunity to partake in my hobby. The lack of a proper town was both disappointing and a setback, but I think I've found a way forward."
She turns to look back at the barracks. "It does dovetail nicely with the plans to move, I think. They'll need some proper supplies and tools, which I may be able to help with."
"It's a shame that we can't just enchant the trail, as we did in the woods back home, to confuse travelers. I don't know the spell, but I've heard of stronger wizards that are supposed to be on the island, maybe together we could think of something." She cocks her head at Sir Narramore and smiles. "You know, I think I'll work on that today. Right now, I was planning on setting up a sawblade from Nallissa, maybe you could give me a hand?"
crap. That's leaning heavily into pushing action ahead.

"I suppose it doesn't," he says after a moment's reflection. "It only follows you and takes other forms." He allows the comment about seeking someone pass without question, but makes a mental note to bring it up another time. For the moment, a chance to feel useful and employ his strength is sufficient.

Re: Everyday Life in Beachtown
The discussion to begin moving the town right away is still at the forefront of the leaders meeting. Glansandi and Marge continue allowing constructive conversation from everyone involved, not tolerating even the slightest arguments among their numbers.
The Constable speaks up. "The last thing we need to do now is to argue or disagree with how this should be handled. As previously mentioned, the first logical order of business is to have a small group go to the river and attempt to construct a ferry that will safely carry everyone and everything we need across the waterway. While there, perhaps the farmers with the least to do here could begin clearing trees and brush so that we may mark our territory and begin laying out plots and the placement of our buildings."
"It has already been determined that the treefolk don't occupy that area, I believe in part because of the sea hag that once lived in the nearby cave. I think this project should be tackled immediately, so I will ask for volunteers with fighting skills to accompany this mission. Once we get situated along the other side of the river, the cave could be utilized as an emergency shelter in case of bad weather or attacks by any unforeseen creatures."
"So, who do we have available to accompany our first settlers to help cross the river? Anyone?"

Glansandi moves to the doorway and yells for anyone who stormed out of the meeting to return, if they like.
Nallissa pipes up next.
"The Princess and I have a lot of woodworking supplies and saw blades at the store that were ordered a while back but never claimed. I believe they were purchased with the idea of building a sawmill someday. Perhaps I could offer the entire crate up to the first trailblazers. That way they can turn the trees into usable lumber as they are removed. It might save on having to haul them away to some other staging area and would decrease the amount of spoils considerably."

That way they can turn the trees into usable lumber as they are removed. It might save on having to haul them away to some other staging area and would decrease the amount of spoils considerably."

Re: Everyday Life in Beachtown
Caleb offers up 2 coppers of his own.
"The 2 new beasts of burden could be taken along to the uncut jungle as well. That would get them out of here in case the dwarves return looking for them, and they could help with moving the heavy stuff around. There is no point for those of us with the worst off fields to continue trying to grow crops here if there is better soil just a few miles away."

Sir William Narramore
Hearing the call and already headed back in that direction, Narramore arrives in time to catch the gist of the conversation concerning the river, sawmill, and their first steps. He nods along with the proposed plan. "Count me in," he rumbles over the heads of the locals.

Glansandi jerks his head towards the paladin.
“You are a holy warrior are you not, Sir Narramore? A man of the sword as well as the cloth?”
“I would like you to go ahead and organize this mission then sir, if you think you are up for the task? I’ve never met one such as you who would turn away from a leadership position. Find some able bodied aid and let’s get this underway immediately, shall we?”

Sir William Narramore
The tall man nods once, then scans the crowd. "I am a warrior, yes. Not a farmer or a sawyer who understands the clearing and cultivating of land, but I can protect those who are. If the brave souls who spearhead the clearing and settlement efforts are satisfied with me at the helm, so be it. If not, I'll yield to one more suited to the task."
