Vann Hector

I do like the idea of a rock fall, that big boulder in the picture or one like it further up the hill that we can be certain will roll down and also we can get the time right.

Sending Renata half a mile down the road to warn us the coach approaches might be a good idea. I suggest this. Get Dawg Dann to lever a rock down to stop the coach or to crash into any guards. Dalin and I to jump on the coach from a tree and deal with driver and guards aboard. Renata to play outrider and deal with any riders.

I don't think two on a horse will race very far so a quick hijack and getaway.

Dalin examines the area "Well probably easiest to set up a roadblock by downing a tree or two. Can't rightly say that digging a pothole would damage the wagon enough to stop it but if we got the time I fear we don't have the tools for such a trap. What do you think Vann?"

Vann Hector

I don't have an axe so chopping a tree isn't going to happen. Maybe cutting a staff a using one to leverage a few heavy boulders up the hill.

I think our best is just jump on the coach in passing so slowing it down sufficiently and then going for it.

I am also aware the 'Inquisitors of Silvanus' may be spell casters and we have no way to counter that except by getting out of spell range.

The elf looks for a spot where both a boulder may be sent crashing down the hillside and a tree may overhand the road.

Dalin shrugs "Guess that is the best we can do then rockslide it is."

April 30th 1066

The road to Ironguard. Duchy of Aerik.

08.45am: Cloudy, light breeze.

While Renata scouts the road from the Old Dwarf Bridge, the others plan the heist. Vann Hector and Dalin cut two large branches to use as a lever on a likely boulder that may roll free of the earth and down the hillside into the Inquisitor group. At your signal, Dawg Dann will trigger the rockfall, hoping to get the timing right. You spare horse is tied nearby for him to mount. The rogues position themselves upon the low boughs of a tree opposite, ready to jump upon the coach.

Then the waiting begins as you hide yourselves. A wagon passes, merchants going to market driving some oxen, a group of hunters carrying two boars on long staves bound for a banquet table or hog roast.

Eventually you hear the fast paced steps of a racing horse. You wave at Renata who hauls in.

"The penal coach is coming. We must be ready. The stage has a driver and guard, four lancers in tow. One outrider on a grey, looks to be the official."

All set you wait in anticipation. Within a couple of minutes, around a bend in the trail comes a large grey wagon. Drawn by two horses and crewed by a couple of men. The carriage looks to have been plated and has a single barred door on the left side. Behind come the lancers, who wear a shiny cuirass and decorated helm. Each wields a long thin lance, silver tipped and decorated with religious pennons.

The wagon passes your marker to spring the trap.

Actions please.

Roll me a 3d6 (vs Dawg's Str) to lift the boulder free to roll and a d20.

Each character jumping into the coach roll me a 4d6 vs Dex. Any melee attack as well.

April 30th 1066

The road to Ironguard. Duchy of Aerik.

08.50am: Cloudy, light breeze.

The plan, simple as it is goes off but not without a hitch. The stagecoach is much more nimble and fast than you realise and though Dawg Dann is able to lever the boulder to roll down the hill, it does not block the road or smash into the coach. Instead, it crashed into the sides of the lancers following the coach and one lancer gets crushed beneath his horse. Another's mount is severely shaken and grazed, the rider struggles to keep it under control. The other two see Dawg Dann and Renata on the hillside and buck their steeds to charge at them. The rogue fires at the incoming guards and two bolts fly over the shoulders of the armed duo.

On the stagecoach itself, Dalin manages to land feet first behind the headboard on the roof of the stage. The driver and guard are caught by the surprise and whip the horses to furiously gallop away. The guard turns to clamber into the roof and weapon drawn looks to duel the highwayman dwarf. Vann Hector doesn't fare so well. He mistimes his jump, rolling off the roof and only just managed to grab hold of the rear fender of the carriage. His feet drag in the floor and he struggles to maintain his grasp. Not only that but the grey horse rider gallops around to the back to confront him.

d6 team initiative please.
Dalin, make normal attack and give me 3d6 vs Dex to maintain balance on stagecoach roof.

VH, 4d6 vs Dex to climb up.

Vann Hector Dex check vs 16 [4d6]=10

Having fallen off the back and only just hanging on, he doesn't want to let go and be trampled by the horsemen. If I can, I will climb up onto the stagecoach roof, chucking any baggage down or loose items.

Are there any footplates along the side if the carriage or even a step riser by the carriage door. I was wondering about working my way around there and picking any locks or even looking in the carriage to make sure the werewolf prisoner is actually inside.

How close up is the rider official on the grey horse? Are they close enough to spear me with their lances?

The heist goes off, not quite to plan but at least some separation of guards from coach. Two lancers urge their mounts up the hillside to tangle with Dawg Dann and Renata. The rogue demonstrates a sleek agility, climbing upon a boulder and hacking down a lancer as he charges. The other pair trade in parrying blows. The surviving lancer from the rockfall calms his mount and chases the coach.

Vann Hector climbs to the wagon roof where he is assailed by a magical force as an ethereal silver hammer bludgeons him. -3hp.

Dalin finds his feet but not his opponent who both flail blows that miss.

The grey mounted priest of Silvanus, having cast a spell gallops after the coach, still furiously driven by the concerned guard.

next actions please.

there is a footplate beneath the door that you could stand in while clinging to a side or top rail.

The riders are about 60'ft behind but closing.

The roof baggage is a collection of chests and trunks strapped down and will therefore need an action to lift and throw rather than just being kicked away.

Well the action or rather non-action continues. Dalin misses, Vann Hector score a hit, the guard misses, the priest fires two arrows which both miss, Renata misses, Dawg Dann misses, the lancer misses. The 'spiritual hammer' even misses.

The driver whips the horse to go faster, the third lancers gets close enough to the carriage to stab next round at the hijackers.

The melee on the stagecoach roof and the hillside further down the road continues. The battle turns against the party. Firstly Dawg Dann gets injured by the lancer trying to spear him -4hp but he unhorsed him with his own spiked peavy and the Inquisitor guard is sent to face the Mercy seat, finished off by Renata. They mount the two horses and gallop after the stage.

On the stage roof, both characters get injured. The magic hammer, blessed and summoned firth by the servant of Silvanus crowns Vann Hector across the temple again before it is dismissed. -2hp. Dalin get the worse of it, a combination of three minor wounds which bring him to his knees and almost falling if the carriage. Firstly an arrow from the priestess impales his left leg -2hp then the lancer riding next to the carriage stabs his right. -2hp Finally the penal guard stabs him in the ribs.-1hp By luck, the doughty dwarf is still standing when each wound may have struck artery or bone instead of lean muscle or that blubber stored up from those extra pies.

From inside the carriage you can hear two voices shouting furiously.

Familiar territory of getting cut to pieces and not hitting back.

I wonder if I can back stab the coach driver. It might halt the wagon and allow us to take over.

we had an extra healing potion. Which character has that?

Dalin not fully fit collapses in the carriage roof. I will change Vann attack to be on guard rather than driver as you fall instead of remaining upright.

The guard gets stabbed by Vann Hector and kicked off the roof. His body trampled by the lancer who rides over him and again tries to stab the rooftop hijackers. The priest of Silvanus, aware that other horsemen pursue the carriage turns to fire a volley of arrows at the duo following them. Dawg Dann takes a critical hit, he is struck through his sternum and falls out of the saddle of the horse, dead before he hits the ground. Renata rides furiously, hand held crossbows blazing mini-bolts which also critically hit the archer in return. The balance of the heist in favour of the Inquisitor group, it is down to Vann to save the day or jump off the carriage and slink away while still able to.

Next action and initiative please.
