Liam

Know when he has lost a crowd. Truth be told he was not looking forward to the trip either but he was even more scared of the idea of dwarves attacking in the dark of night when they had the advantage.

Yes! Night is coming! And dwarves can see in the dark! Do you want to risk being cut down in the dark because you were more worried about being comfortable in your hammock than escaping the certain death that might be coming down that trail right now?

Turning to Jaxsen and speaking softer. We're losing them....

That makes 2 references made to Jaxsen now, so I am not sure if I should continue here or not.

Not sure where he is. Just hoping he is okay. I thought I was dominating the scene and wanted to give him a chance to respond, but he might be afk unexpectedly.

Liam will scan the crowd for the Constable and Jacob. He signals to Marge so he knows he sees her as he looks for possible support.

Jaxsen Reiter

"Please, listen!!" Jaxsen calls to the crowd. "There is nothing for certain saying that the Dwarves are going to attack! But it is a distinct possibility. When they lost a man before, on the dock, they were immediately aggressive. They didn't ask questions, and there was very little negotiation. And when they only thought that we were stealing their ore, remember that they came in force! Again, they didn't come to talk, and they claimed the trail that they didn't make. If they have lost more men on the trail, then it might be like stepping on a fire ants' nest! They may come down here in a large swarm. If they do, we can expect they will either want to take everything, or come looking for blood."

The Monk considers for a moment, and then continues. "But we have a strong swarm here, ourselves! We have worked, and sweated, and lost friends here, together. We will weather this as well. Whether we run or fight, we do it together! But we must decide quickly."

"If it is to be a fight, we need to cut long sticks for spears if you do not have weapons. If you do have a weapon, make it ready! And who has bows or slings? Those could be very important! If we are to run, then gather food for the road and blankets for shelter. All else we can rebuild or take back later. In either event, we need at least a couple of fast runners up the trail to watch for their approach! Who can do that? They must be fast and quiet!"

Jaxsen Reiter

Jaxsen turns to Liam. "I know how to deal with the Dwarves' night vision. If we decide to stay, we need fires. Quite a few of them, scattered around the village. The light and the heat will spoil their night vision." The Monk shrugs. "Or at least it works with the mountain Goblins of my home."

Liam spots Jombo in the crowd, and notices Glansandi leaning against his barracks watching the proceedings. Marge just smiles back at the man from her position on the ground. A few more statements are made from below.

"I dont like the sound of any a them options, mister Liam."

"If we run, and they don't come, we will be leaving the safety of town, only to deal with the natives at the river!"

"Can we just hide here for now an see what happens?"

Once Jaxsen speaks up, the crowd listens intently to the monk as well, responding to his ideas in turn.

"Staying here and using lookouts sounds like a much better idea ta me!"

"Me an my sister is fast runners! Maybe we can help?"

"I heard Nallissa say she's got plenty a used weapons in the store. Maybe we can use em as protection?"

"I dont feel like takin a chance on moving at night. Might be safer ta just face the dwarfs!"

Very few of the townies have been set into motion yet, though a couple of them have rushed back to their shacks to begin gathering items. Marge finally speaks up over the crowd.

"We aint going anywhere near that beach in the dark. The defensive plan sounds much better to me. But how do we go about plannin our warning system, just in case?"

Jaxsen Reiter

Jaxsen nods and smacks his head. "I am but a grub in truth. Yes, we need to ask Miss Nalissa to loan us weapons! Keep in mind, the short reach of the Dwarves! Spears and longer weapons might be better than swords. As for how, we need fires along the edge of the forest and through the middle of town. They cannot see well in the dark if there are fires around them! And if we attack in a line from the trees, they can be blinded until we attack. If we lure them down the main path in town, we'll have fire on both sides and attack from their blindness." The Monk stops and considers again and adds, "This is just an outline and I am just a grub. If there are true soldiers among us, they can perhaps improve on my ideas."

Jax turns to Marge. "What about this one and the sister? Are they fast? Would they make it back here before the Dwarves?" Jax suddenly stops again.... "Before the Dwarves.... can we block the trail to slow them and their lizards? How fast could we do it?" He looks to Marge, as always trusting her opinion.

Liam looks grim but nods. Speaking more quietly so that Jaxsen is probably the only one who can hear him. Who am I to deny them the right to defend what they have built and struggled for....

He heaves a sigh and nods as if resolving to something before he calls out. Alright Beachtown. You want to fight? I am with you. You two... you said you were good runners? Sharp eyes? Get with our Constable here. He will be put in charge of that. If you find that agreeable to coordinate with scouts and your deputies Master Glansandi. I believe you and your men would be best suited for the kind of quick response this might intell.

The old solder in him begins to resurface as he points to the trail. When they come, they will come like they did before. Down the trail.
We need to break any charge they might have. We need a baracade just inside the mouth of the trail... preferably two, so that when they hit one we can get ready before the hit the next... We can make it out of anything heavy and line their side of it with spears and sharpened sticks to break any charge from those giant lizards they like the ride.... Cooks? If we have any foul left over from preparing food, we should also gather it and begins spreading it about the edges of the trail between and before the barriers. Those lizards are easily destracted by food from what we have seen so far.
It is a long shot, but worth a try.

We need spears, like Brother Jaxsen said... the more the better... Lets get some busy hands on that. We also need to get ready with those fires to blind them in case they come at night, and even if they come in the daylight? Maybe the lizards won't like it. And like it or not, we need to also have a plan of escape if things go south. We should begin making a cache to our east so we can grab what we can carry and head to the river just in case...

And idea dawns on him and he looks at Jaxsen. Ever seen a rodent trap? One end is open and the bait is inside? What if we rig the common hall to burn... we could lure the dwarves in... it wouldn't even have to be all of them... just enough. bar the doors on them an burn it down over their heads.

After hearing all the great ideas laid out so far, Marge moves to the front of the crowd and shouts up to the pair.

"Those all sound......well.......most a those sound like real good iders, gents. But I have one question fer ya. How can ya be so sure them dwarves will really attack us here? Did they tell ya they was gonna attack? What could ya have possibly done to them that were so terrible to make em want to come and massacre a bunch a innocent people?"

Glansandi moves towards the crowd as well, nodding to Liam as he shouts out his plans.

"Everything you are suggesting will take several hours to prepare, master Liam. Possibly days. If we had the resources to do such things as barricades and spiked pits, do you not think we would have implemented them already. And I don't personally see how burning down our buildings is a logical course of action if the idea is to save the town."

"I agree that we could send out runners to watch the trail for any large contingency of dwarven soldiers, but some of the other things you two are suggesting simply do not seem completely feasible to me."

Jaxsen Reiter

Falling back on his temple teachings of honoring ones' place, Jaxsen complies with Glansandi's comments. He bows toward the Constable politely. "You are the Constable, and so are charged with the welfare of our hive, Master Glansandi. It shall be as you say. Master Liam and I only wished you to know that the Dwarves may feel that they have been wronged with the killing of their soldiers, whether or not they tried to enslave our entire diplomatic mission. Any defenses you may, or may not, wish to establish will no doubt be the best choice for our hive. I am but a grub."

Ok, thanks. My ESP isn't working too good lately. :D

Glansandi holds his palms together and bows slightly to the monk in a show of respect, always admiring the focus and direction of the young human.

"I will send 2 armed men to the area where their trail leads off the loggers trail. There they should be able to watch the trail closely while in hiding. At the first sign of any danger, they can rush back here to warn the rest of us. If you want to send others with them, that is fine with me. But I don't want young folks running around that trail unprotected. Especially at night!"

He points up to the elevated pair and continues. "Could I have a word with the two of you for a moment in my barracks, please?"

The tired crowd seems confused now, not sure if they should be worried about an imminent attack or not.

Jaxsen Reiter

Jaxsen looks a little embarrassed. Quietly, he says to Liam, "We overstepped ourselves. And I forgot one of the basic pillars of my temple. We should have gone to Glansandi first. My only excuse is that we were trying to follow the Mayor's instructions, but we still should have brought the message to him first. Bralm teaches that it is important to remember your place in the hive, and I forgot."

Liam

Liam is a busy beaver this morning. He will seek out the Princess first. So there are some ideas floating about for your lizards, but first we need a better way to secure them. They are starting to gnaw at the ropes so that is not really an option. We need chains. Joe had the idea of taking one to trade with the natives for some food... specifically whatever they are farming for food up there. We need to figure out what grows around here so we can feed people. Also I am more and more convinced we need to move. Joe and I might be pulling up roots regardless to find better grounds for the animals before they die from stress and lack of good food.

The constable agrees we could also train them with kindness rather than fear and pain to be good beast of burden and mounts. I agree too, but we need to figure out how to care for them soon or it won't matter much.

Next he will go to the Hi-Lo to see Nelissa. Nelissa? Good morning. Hope you are doing well. I hate to pester you, but do you happen to have any chains? Also I am in need of animal feed if you have any. I know both of those are a stretch, but I figured it was worth asking to see if there was any.

Third he will find Caleb. So I have a couple things... First is pretty routine... Do you have any spent crops that are about ready for replowing?
I have animals that could use the grazing and of course, their dropping would likely help the next crop.
The second one is an oddball question for sure... Do you have an idea what a giant lizard would be able to feed on around here.... No, I promise I am not pulling your leg. We brought in a couple giant lizards that the Stoneguts were using as mounts before. I have them tied off for now but we need to find a way to feed them.

Trip four! Marge, my dear. I hate that we haven't been able to talk properly in so long. I hope you are doing well. Any new problems with getting water? Do we need to hitch Jack up and make a run for the river and back? I'm worried about that monster too, but a need for water is a need for water. Speaking of... I have these two giant lizards under my care now... No seriously.... he goes on to explain as he did with Caleb. I just need to get a couple large tubs or buckets to water them with. At least until we figure out what to do with them...

Caleb raises an eyebrow at the thought of giant animals that don’t want to eat you.

“We don’t have any greens ready for yer animals, because the crops ain't growing. And we already give them anything we do have. It seems like we have gone through this concept many times before. Do you have a problem remembering things, Liam?”

“Do you think them beasts could be trained to pull a plow?”
