The Grizzly Woman

A mountain woman enters the tavern smelling of wild things, a tree branch in one hand and a wooden cask in the other. The cask she puts before Hyde the proprietor. "Put a couple pints in here. The cheap stuff will do."

Soon after Irving bursts into the common room and delivers his speech. She blows her cheeks out in response and swigs her watery ale.
Zhym wrote:Fingers huffs.

"Hey everyone!" he calls out to the bar. "If you want to be able to keep the stuff you risk your lives for, come with me! We're gonna go exploring east! Probably kill some goblins on the way!"
The woman takes another deep swig and blows her cheeks out again. "Yep, I'll go for that. Never liked the sniff of a goblin."

OOC: -5 cp for watery ale

Advancing the clock... those leaving on expeditions, please shift to those threads.

Rain and thunderstorms pass through the night of 07 May. The rain pours in buckets on the morning of 08 May.

Carchannoi the elf is seen riding from the south gates of town on his horse, up with the dawn on 08 May, heading south through the deluge.

Markd, 'Captain' Bremen, Irving Malmstein Rosemont the Third, Kellstrom of Baudh, and Olaf Olafssonsson complete a night of devotions in the Chapel of Baudh and depart with a pair of mules. They depart in the rain, heading east to the river ford.

The rain tapers to a drizzle by the evening of the 8th. As the morning dawns on 09 May, the overcast skies dampen the light but the rain, for the moment, doesn't fall.

In the early morning on 09 May, Fingers McGraw, Baxtaw Greayburst, Casper White, Corbin the Lucky, Grizzly Woman, and Silent are seen exiting the city and heading east towards the river ford.

The rain resumes again on the afternoon of the 9th, keeping the streets of town sodden. The flurry of the tavern abates slightly with the recent departures.

At sunset on 09 May, Clay Weatherwax and Gus the farmhand return to town through the North Gate, having come from the northwest, followed by his large dog.

For planning: In addition to Clay Weatherwax, the following are still in town - Adalen Noas, Half-pint, Malenor Windancer. Those three may retroactively join one of the two departing quests if they're quick, or make a third quest with Clay or Foxy. Foxy O'Hare returns to town on 12 May; Blackjack and Earc should be back sooner.

As the groups depart, Hyde posts a Vacancy sign, and lists his rooms once more.

Lodging Records:
  • Suite - Foxy through 14 May
  • Suite - Available
  • Private Room - Available
  • Private Room - Available
  • Private Room - Available
  • Private Room - Available
Current clock: Sunset (9:00pm), on 09 May 2021

Fingers would wait a day if it looks like the weather might improve some. And if it would make it easier for Clay to join the group.

That's fine - we'll wait to see what Clay says. Then let me know if you depart on the 9th or 10th (or later).

Clay Weatherwax
Clay enters the tavern with his dog and the farmhand, Gus. Stopping briefly at the bar, he addresses Hyde. Mr. Hyde, we will have two single rooms, two good meals one ale and one tea, please. We will be off again in the morning. They sit at an empty table and discuss their recent adventure quietly, Clay sipping at his tea.

Upon learning of Finger's expedition, Clay is forced to decline. I am certainly interested in learning what is to the east of here, but I fear my donkey is still stabled at the Farrow farmstead, as are some of my personal belongings. I cannot impose upon the Farrows further. May you find safe travels.

"We're just exploring," answers Fingers. "I don't see why we couldn't stop by the farm on the way."

Well the farm is to the West, which is the opposite direction. but if you are just exploring, there are some interesting ruins to the northwest of the Farrow Farm. One was a tower inhabited by... he looks to Gus for confirmation, uh... dog-headed goblins. And beyond that, I was told there is a city in the forest. Or something like that. The translation isn't perfect.

We took the long way, but the tower is a hard-day's walk from the farm, I would guess. The city is farther than that by two to three days, I would guess.
The more he spoke, the more he realized how vague it all seemed. He feared the pimply teen would start asking him where he got his information.

Kobolds in a tower and an abandoned, stone town/city, anyone?

I thought I would write up a CLW scroll or two, but then I saw they are 100gp. Better off to buy the Baudh-derived potion if I had the cash.

EDIT: Are you sure you want a seventh person on this journey? Seems like a lot for one group.

"I don't think anyone was set on going east," says Fingers. "Just exploring and killing anything that'd try to kill us. No reason we can't do that west instead of east!"

Kobolds, city, and whatever else we find sounds good. And I don't think seven is too many at all.

Okay then. When Clay hears how many people and animals are with Fingers he balks. That is a lot of people to bring to the farm. Gus, what do you think? We should bring back something for the Farrows so they don't get too upset. Which reminds me, Mr. Hyde will probably want to know about the girls being safe. And we should look in on your friend in the Infirmary.

Clay and Gus approach the bar and pull Hyde over to inform him of their successful mission, giving Ms. O'Hare all due credit so she can claim the rewards she was promised by the barkeep. They then head to the infirmary.

If any of the people on that trip do feel like it is too many, please speak up. I am fine bowing out. particularly since I bring three animals with me.

Another option is that we split into two smaller groups, particularly if we add in Foxy O'Hare, who will be well enough to give Clay crap for holding out on her when he gets back to the farm.

Bigger groups are safer, IMO. Standard group size in D&D is 6-8 PCs, so 7 is right in the middle of typical size.

And anyone who can make the grasses and trees grab our enemies and hold 'em fast is welcome on my expedition any day. ;)

The Grizzly Woman

The mountain lady grunts without commitment one way or another about which direction to take. "I'm agoing west just up, get my things. Drop this off." She raises her cask. "Im ameet you at the Farrow's stead."

The hulking woman passes through the tavern door sideways, and some horseflies zip clear out after her.

Edit: But not before she buys 6sp's worth of meat and bread.

A younger petite halfling ties up her pony and walks in, quietly but confident. She looks every bit the normal halfling. Nothing remarkable, positive of negative. She carries a bow across her shoulder and a short sword along her belt. She also has a rudimentary armor of mostly leather under her dark brown cloak.

She looks the place over, hoping to spot a group of treasure seekers, like herself. She'll walk up to the bar,

Good day, kind sir. Might I have a cup o' milk if you please? I am just in from the safe lands. I hear there is lots of adventures out here. Might someone be able to tell me where to find them?

To expedite... take a look at the two expeditions leaving and see if you'd like to join either of them. If so, go post there.
Expedition - Markd/On A Mission From Baudh - 08 May 2021
Expedition - Fingers/Heading East - 08 May 2021
Otherwise, Foxy O'Hare, Earc Orctongue, and Blackjack Amistad might return to town shortly after these expeditions leave, you could propose an expedition with them. (It looks like the expeditions might intersect and they may join up with the current ones, too... that is to be seen.)

OOC: With a crawler captive in tow, it would be a good bet that Earc/Blackjack opt to continue back to town. Earc also wants to update the map at the Golden Tooth and tell tales of their venture. And secure lodgings for a longer period of time and try and figure out where he might set up a lab to study things found and...

But after a day of settling back in and restocking supplies, Earc could easily be convinced to go back out and do some exploration. He will need coin to finance a proper lab.

OOC: Of course, the OTHER option is for Earc to stay in town, getting a private room to do research and the like, and I roll up another PC to head out with the shorty.

Mark'd and the mission might pass by the ford on your timeline tomorrow. Sure any orc speaker and 'warder of Undead' will be made very welcome where we are going. ;)

Well, she cant go with the markd group... and if the ones who are out might be intersecting with that one... I guess she needs to go with fingers out east.

Just before sunset on 09 May, Earc Orctongue and Blackjack Amistad emerge from their rooms for dinner. They may be present in the common room of the Inn when Clay Weatherwax returns.

The tale has begun to be told and retold, growing into a start of a legend as it is popularized by the townfolk. The presence of the very beer that was saved helps, and many pints flow as townsfolk wish to try the rescued brew. The tale finds its way to the merchants, and it is clear that it will be told throughout the Southlands.

CHA check for the tale [3d6] = 7
Credit (100xp) for the retelling goes to Baxtaw. All other party members get 50xp.

"The Saviors of Beer"

The tale is told, with raucous enjoyment, of the Saviors of Beer who went to the north. Great calamity struck, after a long, cold winter, when goblins raided and destroyed the entire first supply caravan to the Land of Gaul. None survived, save one man, Corbin the Lucky. Would such an injustice stand? No. Six brave men went forth to rescue what remained. No knights, these. These are solid men, men of the tavern, men who know toil, men who are salt to the earth, like we are. Not a silver tongue among them. They returned, walking twenty miles, to face the whole horde of goblins, laying dozens to waste! To fend off ogres! The horrors of giant, blood-sucking bats! Yes, this is the tale of those who risked everything to save what Gaul needed most - the glorious taste of Southland Stout beer. By the mighty swords of the Silent Warrior and the Markd One, men so fierce in their aspect they have no names. By the keen bows of Fingers McGraw and Baxtaw, by the magic of the elves Baxtaw and Carchannoi. And with his spear, Corbin killed the goblin's shaman and a giant ogre! The saviors of beer! *cheers go through the tavern* Let me tell you of the details...
Corbin the Lucky begins...
"So its a story you want, barkeep? As I told ya, I was with the caravan that was attacked, so I knew where to find it. Only the goblins had taken everything that was worth a damn. Markd discovered the beer in the stream, they were trying to hide it and keep it cold. After that the goboes wouldn't leave us alone, must be they don't get much good beer. We fought off two groups of them during the night, and both times they ran back with their tales between their legs." Corbin stops momentarily to wipe his mouth, and takes a drink from his ale. "Then we found one of their hidey holes, where we grabbed the rest of the loot. I'd say we killed off at least a dozen of them all told.". Corbin grins, happy with himself, before remembering the last encounter on the trip back. "Then there was the ogres. They wanted our beer too! We killed two of them, and their womenfolk surrendered, and so we sent them on their way back to wherever ogres come from."
The Baxtaw the Elf tells the tale...
Dram wrote:Baxtaw- Patting Corbin on the shoulder. My friend here is being modest. Baxtaw with a big grin. Takes a good swallow from his mug. As my friend said he led the way to where they were ambushed by those stinking goblins. It was late in the evening on the first day so we set up camp. Early morning when we were suddenly attack by 2 giant bats. And they were some of the most viscous things I did ever see. They almost killed our friend Markd there. One had pinned down. Ready to ripped his throat out. Silent cut it to pieces like the master swordsman he is. Corbin here skewered the other with his spear. Baxtaw takes another drink from his mug. On the second day we set out. Travelling all day. We found the bashed and smashed carts. Markd there found the kegs hidden under a cart in the stream. Them goblins were keeping the ale cold for us. We first had defend the kegs from our friend Fingers there. Or he would had it all drunk by the morning. THere was goblins tracks everywhere we looked most of them heading to and from the southwest. We each had a drink with our rations then set in fer the night. Carchannoi suggests decided to ride southwest on his horse to scout. We decided to set up camp away from the hidden kegs. So that we could keep watch over them during the night. About an hour after dusk, the Fingers dog begins growling low in his throat, his hair raised on his back. We begin looking where sprinkles is looking seeing several small shapes trying to hide at the edge of the firelight. The others move behind the wagon for cover. I move off into the shadows using night eyes. There leader starts hollering some goblin gibberish. Them goblins aint as dumb as ya think they would be. They was trying to talk us up till there friends got there with them. Well! we wasn't lettin that happen I tell ya. There was seven of them we killed six one being their Shaman we believe. Fingers fires an arrow at the goblin hitting him right through the eye. The Shaman done skewered himself on Corbins spear. Silent our mighty warrior was charged by five of them. He took the head right off one of them. I myself shot in the neck with Master Longbow. Silent pulls his and kills another one hitting him in the neck. The last run off in the dark screaming for its leader. Sdubok was the name, I believe. Baxtaw takes a final swig from mug. Hyde can fill me up another mug this got a hole in the bottom of it. He smiles at Hyde.
Dram wrote:Baxtaw continues on with his story. So we hear this gobbie screaming for his king or god as Fingers here was understand there language. We decided we best be moving before the one that got away brought back all his buddies. We found a secluded grove. Then we hear a bunch of them gobbies hollering and screaming. We decide to see what was going on as Carchannoi had not returned from his scouting mission. The others sneak up to a ridge. I sneak off in the dark using my night eyes. There was a dozen goblins climbing over the wagons. Them goblins were quite upset that we had found the Ale was open They found our tracks. Half have of them with torches and spears, the other half carry bows. They begin charging up the hill. Carchannoi is ahead them on his horse with a goblin on the back of saddle. There was a big boulder at the top of the ridge we pushed it over the ridge. killing one Silent cut the heads off 3 of them within seconds. Carchannoi and Mark killed another 3 of them. The 5 run off in the dark towards the Ale. They begin to push one of the kegs away. We charge down the hill. Fingers screaming at the top of his lungs "Hey! They're trying to steal our beer!" Get them bastards. We begin firing arrows at them. We killed 3 more. The last 2 were not strong enough to move the keg so they run off. Carchanno had charmed one them named Ghunk. Ghunk took us to their sleeping holes. We snuck in andkilled four more in there sleep. We found some more of the stolen goods. It was still 2 days travel to town. We set up camp. Silent, Carchannoi, and Fingers and Sprinkles take first watch. I woken up by Sprinkles barking thinking there were more goblins wanting to fight for the beer. My eyes adjusting, it wasn't goblins it was Ogres 4 of them. I sneak off in the darkness again using my training as a Elven Seeker. They begin throwing boulders into the camp. Carchannoi puts the big one to sleep Corbin burries his spear into the large one heart and finishes it. Another big one grabs a keg and starts to run off with when the big one fell. Must been it mate because it stopped dead in tracks and that's when hit it with my elven magic it fell over dead. Carchannoi charms the smaller 2 of the 4. The 2 young ogres were no threat to us. They were starving so we sent them off with a barrel of dried fish and told them to leave our lands. Then we arrived here in town the next day. He takes a drink from his mug. And he looks to his Comrades. Did I forget anything my friends?

Casper White

So...did Fingers group leave on the morning of the 9th or are we still in town to leave at a later date? It makes a difference whether Casper rents a room for a night or two and is present for the tale and the ale.

Assuming we are still at the inn...
Casper stables Ted and rents a single room for himself. He pays the stablehand an extra two silvers to take good care of their goods, especially the feed bags, and to give Ted a good rub down and some carrots for the evening.
Once in his room, he will change clothes, freshen up a bit, and then head downstairs for a good meal and some beer. Hearing the story of the rescued beer, he will naturally have to try some.
Winter is coming...
