Action Thread #8 - Beyond the Lake
Re: Action Thread #8 - Beyond the Lake
Sensing this vine could move toward him next, Malone comes crashing down with his magnificent halberd:
To Hit with Halberd: [1d20] = 9, Dam(s/m): [1d10+6] = 3+6 = 9, Dam(l): [2d6+6] = 6+6 = 12
(Thac0=17, so hits a ac8. Not sure what AC a kudzu monster is...)

"Well, a druid is usually a mysterious guardian of a sacred grove, a cunning master of many shapes, friend of animals, and a defender of unspoi...Lookout, that vine is moving." Stonjuz pulls his handaxe to an offensive position to defend the group and swings downward at the invasive plant.saalaria wrote:Swilbosh turns to Stonjuz "what is a druid?"

Feeling that his blades might be more useful than his bow in this case, Ozborn draws his weapons and if close enough, he attacks:
To hit w/ Short Sword, main hand: [1d20+2] = 4+2 = 6, damage (s/m): [1d6+3] = 6+3 = 9, damage (L): [1d8+3] = 3+3 = 6

Yikes.
If not close enough, he runs up to the vine to attack next round.

Swilbosh also enters melee to help his friends draw away from the plant:

Re: Action Thread #8 - Beyond the Lake
Thurinor, who has been walking along in the back rank of the party, gazing into the forest and enjoying the closeness of leaf and bole and murmuring in friendly tones as if talking to old friends, nearly stumbles into the others as they react to the menacing vine. "I was just thinking this walk has been a touch too peaceful," he says, and pulls his sword from its sheath to strike at any tendrils that venture too near.

Day 5 - Morning - Lake's Edge/By the Rope Bridge
Round 1
Party Initiative: [1d6] = 2, NPC/Monster Initiative: [1d6] = 1
Segments: Party 1st, Stonjuz/Ozborn/Thurnor/Vine 2nd
Stonjuz and Swilbosh were in the midst of a conversation when the plant attacked the ranger and see it suddenly interrupted. The dwarf makes for his axe. Ozborn begins drawing his twin short blades. Thurinor pulls his own shortsword.
Andrin, failing to see how he can help fight this menace remains behind and scans the surroundings for other dangers, finding none.
Ogirdor fights the tendrils flailing in his direction with spear and axe, to no effect. Malone moves in and attacks the vine itself wrapped round the pine tree instead of its tendrils, but his halberd only meets pine bark, not the stem of the attacking plant itself.
Swilbosh the lizard man advances to help Ogirdor with the flailing spiky tendrils, he swipes his battleaxe but doesn't manage to get a solid hit in any of the the thin, ropy tentacle-like things.
Stonjuz soon joins him hacking with yer another axe, but with much the same effect given his poor axe-wielding skills. Along comes Ozborn stabbing with dual shortswords, but he too fails to hit any of the tendrils. Last but not least Thurinor joins the fray with his own gladius; and like everyone else doesn't manage to get in a solid hit on the vines.
The spiky vines continue to assail Ogirdor...

...one of them manages to warp itself around the ranger/priest. Ogirdor feels the spines along the tendril bury themselves into his flesh in exposed areas and between nooks and crannies in his armor. Then comes the feeling of his blood being sucked through those plant teeth into the tendril itself, and presumably the plant. This fauna feeds on blood!
Ogirdor looses 4 Hit Points due to blood drain.

At the side of the ranger, Swilbosh swings his battleaxe mightily and completely severs the vine lashed to Ogirdor. Malone keeps attacking the root plant coiled on the pine tree with his haldberd...with no success. Free once again, Ogirdor still makes a few tentative attacks with axe and spear at the other vine tendril near him but doesn't manage to get in a blow. Cursing and shouting, Stonjuz hacks at the vines on him with his hand axe, but accomplishes little more than flailing uselessly. But the fighting rogue Ozborn, blade on each hand, twists and turns and strikes. When he is done another vine tendril has been severed and fall to the leafy soil.

Thurinor decides to back out of range of the reaching vines, not wanting to also get entangled. If he can do so this round, he'll hurl a magic missile, either at one of the vines entangling a companion or at the central plant. If not this round, next round. Ozborn suddenly feels as if he's having an out-of-body experience – is he really fighting a blood-sucking plant? He watches himself swing his blades again... it just can't get any weirder than this:

The ranger presses the disengage button and as he backs off he says to the others Retreat fellas, let us deal with it from a distance. No need to risk ourselves more than necessary.
