Everyday Life in Beachtown
Re: Everyday Life in Beachtown
Dexter Broadleaf
Dexter, investigating where some of his workforce has gone, finds a few of them chatting up a Gnome. "C'mon, fellas, we've got to get the boats ready before the fish Quark brought in runs out." Turning to the Gnome, he says. "I'm sorry, sir, but we have a lot of work to get done here. We should be finished late this afternoon or this evening." Dexter excuses himself as well and returns to the launchways to get the fishing fleet in order. He is determined to make sure the ships are as solid as can be arranged with the materials at hand as fast as possible.

Yes Raythan, We do know each other but first things first. I am Darklin Sylvanos, Mage and Scholar. I have come seeking you wisdom and perhaps we could share a few spells if your up for it.
Hello Ceawyn and Paul. Looks like you have healed pretty well.

Cealwyn Blackthorn
The ranger chuckles, nodding and finding himself a little overwhelmed by the elf's customary high-energy approach. "Hello, Darklin. You look well, yourself."
He nods at Raythan's query. "Aye, we're acquainted. And I fear we're crowding your home and should likely be on our way." Cealwyn takes a last sip of his tea. "That was quite good, Raythan. We appreciate your hospitality and the information you provided. If you'd like to speak further regarding the tentacle-beast, we'll be in town drumming up support."
He offers a gracious nod and looks to Paul with a raised eyebrow, preparing to rise from his seat. "Ready, mate?"

The Knife
The Knife looks at the fisherman, nonplussed. "Oh. Well. Yes, you're right. I was going to offer you a gold piece to borrow one of your anchors for about twenty minutes to fish my gear out. If you don't care about the fish, my offer still stands."
Once Dexter explains the situation, The Knife smiles. "Ah! I'm sorry. I didn't know it was boat building day. If you're not going anywhere today, can I borrow an anchor? I'll pay a gold piece for it. I promise I'll bring it back."

"Not my anchor," Dex tells the Gnome. "But if you want to rent one, follow me back to the launchways. I'm sure a piece of gold for 20 minutes will sound very good to them." As they walk back, Dex tells him, "By the way, my name is Dexter Broadleaf. We're revamping the boats for deeper water. A lot of the shoreline seems to be fished out."

The Knife
"Hello! I'm The Knife. And so is he" The gnome slaps his sword hilt. "We just got here. A fish killed one of our companions. A halfling actually. Her name was Jinx. Did you know her? Then we captured another fish."
"Now there's a big fish trying to stop me getting my armor back. I don't think it's coincidence. It could be a revenge mission. Do you think fish talk to each other? Probably. There's a lot of them out there. Gossip probably gets around quickly."
The Knife follows Dexter to get a good deal on his anchor.

TK gets a parting shot from the fishermen as he and Dex move back towards the dock. ”Ye juss told us that ya dumped all yer things in the sea. Why would ye then ask us to rent ye something else of ours that ye will likely juss dump in the sea?”

Hello Ceawyn and Paul. Looks like you have healed pretty well.
Turning back to Darklin, Raythan appears unimpressed.
“No offense, but do you often ask to share people’s spells when you introduce yourself for the first time? Who did you learn under to teach you that? Most elves I know keep their magical knowledge to themselves. They wouldn’t share their tricks of the trade with their own mothers. What makes you think I, or anyone else, would be so willing to share my priceless lifetime of knowledge with you?”

With the way the world treats people around here I am trying to change that. If us Mage's share our knowledge and information it will make us all stronger. I am not here to take your life's work, only to add to it. I have spells to trade if your interested but I was told that you are the area expert on this place so I assumed you had information that would be helpful to us all. Beachtown is running out of time. The food is running out, their are several new monsters stalking the water trail, and the Dwarves have issues a challenge that none of us are able to stand up to. The way I see it I am an Elf so I have 6 or 7 human lifetimes to find and research spells so why not share what I know, and if I learn a couple new spells in the process then so be it. Beachtown needs you. I have heard that you no longer wish to be involved in our community but we need you to help us. The Mayor is dead and there is no one who would lead this town, we need all the help we can get.
Darklin waits a few seconds in silence for an answer. Then begins in a softer tone.
I know you don't know me, but I am the one who almost died twice defeating Bing's pirates. Our group was almost killed off and I for one wish to find out all I can about this area and what is dangerous here. I also thought as a fellow Mage you would be interested in sharing spells and learning new knowledge from me. If I was wrong then I apologize and I will leave you to it.

"Will do," Cealwyn says with a nod as he steps outside. "Thank you again for the hospitality. Good day, Raythan." He sends Darklin a friendly nod. "See you around, mate. Nice to bump into you." He and Paul amble back toward the village.

Dexter Broadleaf
Dexter walks The Knife back to where the fishermen are working on the boats. "This fellow calls himself The Knife. He wants to use an anchor to fish some of his gear off the bottom where it fell from Capt. Quark's ship. He's willing to pay a gold coin for 20 minutes renting of the anchor." Dex winks at the fishermen with the eye away from The Knife. "Personally, I'd make him tie the anchor off to the dock before he starts fishing, since he's already dropped some of his own gear in the drink."
Turning to face The Knife once more, he says, "No, I'm afraid I didn't know this Jinx person. But these fellows are the ones you want to talk to about renting an anchor. As for me, I need to get back to work. Excuse me."

"Thank you Mr Broadleaf. Have a good day". The Knife turns to the fishermen. "As you heard Mr Broadleaf say, some of my gear is in about twenty feet of water at the foot of the dock. Although I didn't drop it it in there by accident. I was trying to escape from the dwarves after I killed one of them. Anyway, I need some kind of hook to pull it up and was thinking that one of your anchors might fit the bill".
"My backpack is also out there, about fifty feet away from the dock. If anyone could get that back I'd pay another gold piece."

”An anchor’s no good, mate. What ye needs is a gaff hook!”
The man goes into one of the boats and pulls out a heavy iron hook with a wooden handle afixed to one end.
“Strap this thing to a long pole or stout rope and ye can dredge fer anything ye want.”
“If yer a friend of Dex, I won’t even charge ye. As long as ye bring it back, and don’t loose it. This was me da’s hook.”

The Knife
"A-ha! Splendid!" says the gnome, eyes wide. "In fact." The Knife unspools the ten feet of rope on the side of his pack. "I'm sure you are much better than me at tying knots. Would you please tie this to it? That way you'll know I did my absolute best to take care of it."
Then he looks at the rope and the gaff. "That looks like it will just about reach...er...I don't suppose you have a couple of extra feet of rope? That way I can tie it to the dock as Mr Broadleaf suggested".
Once the gaff and rope are tied together, The Knife thanks the fisherman and heads off to the end of the dock to try his luck.

The Knife raises his eyebrows, surprised. "Well...no...just trying to keep your father's gear safe. Wouldn't want to lose it through carelessness. You're a sailor, you know the saying Don't spoil the ship for a copper of tar.".
The Knife gives the fisherman his best smile. "People call me The Knife". He extends his hand. "Thank you for your help, mister.....?"

"Thank you Twister! Let me show you where the gear is". The Knife leads the fisherman off to the end of the dock.
Once they reach the piling at the end The Knife points out the armor resting at the base of it. "I was thinking if we tied the rope to the gaff, and then to the dock, we could let the gaff sink. The metal head will drag it down point first. Then we can pull the rope side-to-side like a pendulum. With a bit of luck we'll snag an armhole or a strap with the hook and pull it up".

He Shoots! He scores!

Note to self: don't brag about the first awesome dice roll before you make the second roll.
