Chapter One - Into the Shadows
Re: Chapter One - Into the Shadows
Awwrak makes a kackkackkackkack noise.
"Kura waits alone." He looks over those here - Sade, Quelnaar, 3of4. Lothien and Rodrigo have not yet arrived. Flying back for them means going near the town.

Lothien
Nicely done, friend. The group is headed to a clearing in the woods to make camp. Let's head that way and you can tell us what the map shows.

Rodrigo nods and offers his comrade a hand up. "Then let us be off, my friend. Thank you for waiting."

Re: Chapter One - Into the Shadows
As dusk falls and the group loiters longer and longer, Awwrak fluffs his feathers in agitation on his perch.
Eventually, he notices the scratching on the tree which the others were examining prior to his arrival. He hops off his branch and drifts to the ground, looking at it more closely.
Nature [1d20+7] = 17+7 = 24

Re: Chapter One - Into the Shadows
"Stubby sort claws," Awwrak comments derisively, flexing his own long talons subconsciously into the loamy forest dirt as he examines the tree.
"I must return, before something fell befalls Kura." He explains the location of the henge to them so they can find their way once they've gathered.
Pausing another moment to see if they have any additional questions, Awwrak then flaps his wings and ascends back into the clouds, returning to Kura.

Re: Chapter One - Into the Shadows
As Awwrak takes off and flies North West, he disturbs some of the more benign critters who disappear into the edge of the clearing.
You hear several squeals and yelps that don't sound too promising.
After an ominous silence, you hear what sounds like a sticky, squelchy belch and a low moaning from the trees on eastern side of the clearing

Sade
Sade will look and see if she can tell what is over there. Just in cast she gets her staff ready.
Perception [1d20+6] = 16+6 = 22
Investigation, w/advantage [1d20+1] = 11+1 = 12 [1d20+1] = 8+1 = 9

Re: Chapter One - Into the Shadows
Sade can see what looks like a dark figure moving, slowly and jerkily through the brush towards the edge of the clearing and the group

Still holding his "firewood" he listens to his companions. should we proceed now, or regroup with the others and set out tomorrow after we are all rested? he then turns to look where Sade is looking, likly swinging the tree trunk over the heads of the others.
Perception [1d20] = 2
not that it would have made any difference with the rolls so far, but how do I know what bonuses to add? I feel like I am missing something

Sade
"Something coming our way, can't tell what yet."
Perception uses your Wis bonus/penalty. If you are proficient in it, then you get to add +2, if you have expertise (mostly only rouges) you get another +2. There are some other stuff but its unlikely you have it. Looking over your sheet I think you are even, +0.

I think bonuses would be wisdom and/or perception feat?
Someone with more 5e experience could help out as well

I think Rex said it exactly right about the Perception bonus.

The figure is very close to breaking into the clearing.
You hear more groaning behind the closest creature.

Sade
"If you have missile weapons, ready them. Spread out in case they have area of affect magic. I have first contact."
Sade moves to the center, slightly in front of everyone else.
Louder to whatever is approaching, "Who is there, we mean no harm to anyone but will defend ourselves."

3of4
Now facing the direction of the possible threat holds the tree trunk over his head in both hands, ready to hurl it across the clearing.
Ready for immediate combat. all his internal workings begin to whine and ratchet up.

Re: Chapter One - Into the Shadows
A dark figure breaks the treeline of the clearing.
It is of medium humanoid height and is covered from head to toe in what looks like thick mud.
Walking in a stiff, shambling gate, the creature snarls as it spies Sade and starts to move towards her.
The moaning and snarling from the trees seems to increase in volume.

"I don't think this thing is very intelligent."
She takes up a defensive stance and prepares to defend herself.

Re: Chapter One - Into the Shadows
Qelnaar's head spikes rise in agitation as lightning begins to crackle around them. He stands to Sade's defense, readying Eldritch Blast should the creature appear to be ready to attack.
