Layover in Morsten 2

The fellow scratches the stubble on his cheek and says, "Diplomatic mission? God forsaken land?"
He eyes the rock candy offered by Sai but does not take any. "Down the street near the river; can't miss him. And I'll have you know Morsten ain't no gods-forsaken land. Morsten is the eastern anchor for Furyondy! Why, if me and my men weren't here, there's no telling what the Old One might try."

"Goblins and worgs? Dangerous activity and other creatures?" he repeats, scratching the other side of his face. "The boys of Green Company killed an owlbear...oh, about three weeks ago. It charged 'em when they were on patrol up the river. Haven't seen any goblins or orcs or such. About how many Goblins and worgs attacked you?"

Muldgarr settles his horse in the stables and walks around a bit. He notices a lot of military presence here in the form of Furyondy soldiers. Also, the docks along the river are being fortified, as well as extended to harbor larger ships.

Kranston stays with the wagons. After brushing out his pony, he begins to compose an epic tune while softly playing his drum. After several minutes of drumming and singing, Kranston hears, "You play very well. You must have had a lot of practice. I wish I could play like that."
Kranston looks to where the voice is coming from, but there is no one around.
"Did you make that drum yourself?"
This time the voice sounds like it is coming from under the wagon.
And then, while he is looking under the wagon, a tiny figure steps from behind a barrel and out into the open.

The creature, no more than two feet in height, doffs its hat, offers a deep bow, and says, "I am pleased to meet you. My name is Obillamuck, but most call me Obi. What is your name?"

Kranston, trying to mask his surprise, stands and bows with a flourish.

"A pleasure to meet you, I'm certain, Obillamuck... er, Obi," he says. "I am Kranstön Kranstönson, a bard of... well, little renown as of yet. This is my faithful steed, Eustace. I travel with a company on official business. To what do we owe the pleasure of your visit? And more importantly, how may I, personally, be of service?"

Montego continues to grill the man.

"Owlbear, eh? That sounds dangerous enough to me."

"Have you ever heard of a creature that can change its shape, like from a goblin into a wolf?"

"We were attacked by something like it several days ago, and our normal weapons did nothing to harm the beast."

"I dont suppose you know of anyone willing to sell off any magical weapons, in case we encounter the beast again?"

The large human is almost afraid to hear the answer, knowing what a foolish question it is.

Muldgarr greets some of the soldiers...Good day to you, sirs. We are traveling thru town and this area looks to be wholly fortified. What causes this to be done?

Cassius

"Bout a half dozen of each, I reckon." Cassius adopts the speech patterns of the local, he finds it helps reduce some prejudice. "Good to hear that they ain't been up here. Just might want t' keep an eye out, ya know?"

"You know, I've heard a bit bout silver working when steel don't. You ever hear a' that?"

The talkative Furyondian is suddenly beset by both Montego and Cassius, one being inquisitive and the other, well...
"Silver? Aye, I've known it to...say, yer an Elf ain'tcha? Funny accent...for an Elfish feller." He gives Cassius a curious stare.

The man thinks about it for another second or two and then seems to shake himself and turns to Montego.
"Yeah, the owlbear maimed one of Green Company's finest; don't expect him to live much longer. And as for...did you say a shape changing wolf? Like a werewolf?"
A shadow passes over the man's face and he almost looks afraid. "Wish we did have some magic weapons and such! Might be we would have turned the tide of the war a lot sooner...without as high as cost."

The man's silence makes an opportunity for another soldier to have a turn. "The only magic around these parts is from the wizard, Shumar. His room is in the northeastern tower, facing the river."

The soldiers give Muldgarr several silent stares, but one finally speaks up. "The Great Old One is forever scheming. Just because the peace accords were signed, doesn't mean Iuz is going to agree to them. We're here to make sure he remembers what he signed."
The man walks toward Muldgarr as he talks, until he is standing close enough to...offer his hand.

"The name's Dempsey. These are my men..."
"And women!" yells a female guard, a mug in her hand.
"...and women." Dempsey smiles. "We are Green Company. What brings you to Morsten, traveller?"

Obi smiles again and replies, "I was attracted to your drumming. I've been hanging around this human city for a few days because I was angry...and sad...and hopeful...all at the same time! Has that ever happened to you, Kranston son of...Kranston?"
The diminutive fellow sudden giggles and then covers his mouth. "Pardon me, but I just realized you and your father, I presume, have the same name! That's wonderful! Anyway, a few days ago, my friend was attacked and killed not far from here. Her name was Pudding. And...and the big folks who killed her live here in this city. I followed them and have been spying on them since. Before she died, Pudding hurt one of the big folks really bad."
He grows quiet and then says, "Tell me, Kranston, what would you did if someone hurt...even killed one of your friends?"

"Shumar, you say?" Montego answers the man. "That is the same name as a dear friends oldest child. Probably not the same person."

The ranger looks to the northeast, hoping to spot the tower in the distance.

"Is he a decent man, this Shumar? Most wizards have a.....certain way about them. If he has magical weapons up there, perhaps a trade of some sort might be in order?"

Montego looks around the plaza, trying to keep track of where all of his associates are.

"He's an odd fellow, indeed...as most wizards tend ta be. I've only seen him one time. He was standing atop the tower and sending bolts of lightning into a small horde of goblinoids making a night crossing of the river. The stench from their roasted, bloated bodies was something I won't soon forget!"

The only person you can lay eyes on from your company is Cassius.

"I am sorry to hear about your friend, Pudding. A beautiful name. Are the ruffians responsible hereabouts? Perhaps my friends and I could aid you in dispensing justice!" He stands proudly, chest puffed out and fist clenched, speaking into the air.

"And yes, to answer your question, Obi, my father's name is also Kranston. A source of pride, yet it did always cause difficulty with mail delivery."

Muldgarr is mine...good to meet you sir. My companions and I are passing thru, headed to Willip using the old Grabford-Critwall-Willip trail. It’s not a common route for some, the grass seemed greener at the time, which is why we agreed to it. He smiles and pulls out 1SP ...Do you know of any happenings going on in those areas, that would be of concern to us ?

Cassius

"Seems this Shumar is the fellow to go find. Seeing as how he has no love for goblins." Cassius looks around as well. "You want to gather everyone before we head over?"

Montego agrees with Cassius.

"Yes, let us round up the others and see what they have learned before checking into this wizard tower."

"Thank you, and good luck to you,"
he says to the soldiers, waiting before he leaves in case they have anything else to tell.

Cassius and Montego look around for the others of their company, but none are to be seen, although they heard Kranston drumming a few minutes ago over by the wagons; Sai and Muldgarr are nowhere in sight. In the direction of the tower, Montego sees the last rays of the sun gleam off something metallic at the top.
The wind shifts and the ranger gets a brief scent of death...

Over by the wagons...

Obi stands a little taller...which is not much, but still...and says, "Then on the name of your father, will you help me avenge my friend? I know where the killers stay. I can lead you there right now. Won't you come?"

Dempsey looks at the silver piece and then snaps his fingers. One of his men hands him a full mug of beer.
"No need to pay, Muldgarr. This one's on me. Besides, if you're foolish enough, or brave enough, to travel the Willip Trail, then the least I can do is front you an ale. Orcs and their kind have been seen all up and down the river. My guess is you'll find a few on the road."

Unbeknownst to his companions, Sai is faced with something he has never encountered before.
There are several cots in a small room with only two windows...and they are closed. It is stifling hot inside and the air is thick with death. Two acolytes, including the one who led Sai to the priest, are changing bandages, cleaning festering wounds, and applying poultices.
"Here is our brave bear fighter!" the portly priest proclaims, showing Sai a man who is clearly on death's door.
Another man, possibly a companion, sits near him, speaking to him softly.

The dying man is deathly pale. His face has been scratched and torn, his left arm is gone below the elbow with a bloody stump seeping pus. Flies linger in the air and it is clear the man has only minutes left...

"By all means, sir! I pledge it! Justice shall be yours." says Kranston.

A moment later he adds, "Er... killers, plural, implies I will need to gather my companions first. One moment - I believe they went this way." He will motion for the little guy to follow and set off to find the rest of the party.

Sia

Stifling a full on vomit he covers his mouth and nose with his cloak and moves to the man's face. Addresses his friend.

You there take your sword and heat it Cherry red in the fire out front. When it is heated come and tell me. Go now hurry if you wish to save your friend!

He then pulls his Holy Symbol (a palm sized Silver Oak leaf) from his tunic, closes his eyes and begins to hum. Casting Cure Light Wounds on the man's face first. OOC- If I can't save him at least it can be open casket.

[1d8+2] = 8+2 = 10 CLW Ehlonna is Listening.

He then moves to the torso.

[1d8+2] = 7+2 = 9 CLW

He then waits for the man to respond with the sword heated to cauterize the stump.

Montego stores the shining object into his memory and thanks the soldiers for the information before leaving them to seek out his missing companions.

"I just heard some drumming in this direction, we better go look for them before we are all separated."

Cassius

He nods his agreement. "We've been in town for 5 minutes and we scattered faster than sailors on shore leave." He looks over Montego and himself. "Can't be us. We're two upstanding model citizens."

Cassius moves with Montego over to the drum session.

Muldgarr accepts the mug...Thank you, the ale is quite refreshing...orcs you say...that is not good to hear. I must tell my companions. He tosses the SP to Dempsey...May your swords keep each other safe! He bids them good day.

Kranston Kranstonson, having made a promise, aims to keep it, as he goes in search of his companions, Obi walking as fast has his little legs can do in order to keep up with the Dwarf.

Montego and Cassius venture back toward the wagons to find Kranston, having heard his drumming not long since. As they close, they do indeed see their Dwarven companion...and a smaller man-like creature hurrying along beside. What in the world is that strange diminutive thing?
Suddenly, a scream echoes down the river to where the trio has come together; it came from somewhere north of the town, perhaps near the tower of the wizard...

The ale refreshes Muldgarr even as he frowns from the news of Orcs on the trail. He tosses the silver piece to Dempsey and the man snatches it out of the air with practiced ease. May your swords keep each other safe! Muldgarr says, as he leaves.
"Keep your ears...else the Orcs will be wearing them as a necklace!" yells the woman of Green Company, to a chorus of laughter and cheers.
Muldgarr goes in search of his companions...and he spies them back near the wagons. It looks like Montego, Cassius, Kranston...and something, or someone(?) else. Suddenly, a scream echoes down the river to where Muldgarr is standing; it came from somewhere north of where he had been with the soldiers.

Not only is the infirmary stifling hot, Sai has to stifle the bile threatening to spew out of his mouth. After giving directions for the man's sword, Sai calls upon divine favor...and is relieved to find Ehlonna listening. The open wounds on the man's face stitch themselves, leaving only the slightest trace of a scar. The color in his face and arms returns and his labored breathing relaxes; the blood stops seeping from his wounds. His companion returns with the sword, it's tip glowing red with heat.
Sai unwraps the man's stump, takes the sword, and with the man holding his companion, sets the red hot tip to the stump.
The searing and smoking flesh blacken as the sword cauterizes the wound.
The man jerks in agony, screaming loudly as his companion hold him down, telling him it will be alright.

Breathing hard, Sai sets the sword aside to check on his patient.
"Will he live?" asks the man's companion, his face filled with worry.

Sai

After cauterizing the puss filled stump and setting aside the sword. He returns to the arm and gives it a once over. Casts his last cure light wounds to make sure the infection is gone. He bandages the stump with clean bandages and throws the old stuff in a pile.

[1d8] = 2 CLW

Yes, Yes, I think He will live. His wounds are healed and the stump has stopped bleeding. He just needs rest and some fresh air. Priest open the end flaps on his tent. The smell of dead and decay is overwhelming in here. This is a healing place not a grave. Get some fresh air through here. Help me get him up and out of here. We will take him for a short walk. fresh air will do him good.
