Cealwyn Blackthorn

Cealwyn nods along with the countdown and his smile broadens into a fierce grin when pandemonium breaks loose in the pirate camp. Laughing with the joy of battle, he springs from the trees and sprints into the clearing, eyes roving for a clear shot at any threat to his companions or their new allies. He is especially watchful for anyone who is giving orders or preparing to cast a spell.

He glances at the tree as Dexter makes quick work of the ropes, punctuating the Halfling's directions with a brief nod toward the jungle. "Waste no time, friend."

Watching The Watchers
Sunday, the 14th of Goodmonth
Late Morning, Hot, Muggy, Buggy

As the chaos inside the clearing escalates, Dexter and Daisy make a run for the detained elf while Cealwyn and Glansandi cover them. Once at the tree, Dexter finds that this elf doesn't look very good at all. He appears somewhat battered and sleep deprived, barely even able to respond to his liberators. His demeanor changes once he realizes that he is being freed though, and he rushes away from the wooded prison as soon as he is cut free. He moves over to the side of a nearby hut to grab his pack and other gear as Dexter points the way to safety.

Cealywn and Daisy notice 2 men exit another nearby hut, one of them rushes into the battle with the treefolk while the other begins gesticulating the intricate hand movements of a magic spell. These men are also quickly set upon by the gliding tree dwellers, though several of them fall to the ground at the mages feet as soon as his spell is complete. The ranger takes a bead on this specific target with a sly smile on his face.

The tree folk appear to have caught most of these men by complete surprise, keeping any early casualties on their side to a minimum. Most of the men have resorted to punching and kicking the furry little monsters, though a few of them do have weapons in hand that they use with varying degrees of success. Then a few shouts ring out above the din. "Intruders at the killing tree!" "They are going for the prisoner!" "Train your fire in that direction!"

The elf grabs his gear and slings a leather harness over his head and shoulders his pack. He then moves to the corner of the building using it for cover. Looks to the halfling and says, "That wizard will be bad news later." I will distract him. Get yourself free. i thank you for freeing me. The elf then draws his bow and let's fly 2 arrows from his massive bow at the wizard.

[1d20+3] = 4+3 = 7 first arrow

[1d20+3] = 15+3 = 18 second arrow

[1d6] = 3

Dexter Broadleaf

Not desiring to get involved in a large melee, Dexter keeps moving towards the Ranger. He swaps out his short sword for his sling as he does so. "Better to keep my distance from pointy pirate pikes," he mutters with a grin.

Daisy
Daisy retreats to the woodline. She watches the battle closely, ready to move if Dexter or the captive go down. Her mace is in one hand, her holy symbol in the other.

Cealwyn Blackthorn

"There you are," Cealwyn mutters as the wizard appears. He draws a bead and exhales as he sends two arrows hissing toward the conjurer.

[1d20] = 8

[1d20] = 20

[1d6] = 2

Doubled for 20 = 4

He flashes a grin at Dexter and chuckles. "Aye. There's naught pointy on a pirate of interest to me, either." Ducking back behind the corner of the hut, he fishes in his quiver for another arrow and looks at Glansandi.

"Shall we cut the head off this snake or retreat while yet we may?"

The posted rolls look good to me. :)

Watching The Watchers

The freed elf fires off two arrows in the direction of the casting wizard as soon as he reaches his bow. One of the missiles hits its mark, causing his spell to be lost. Cealwyn follows suit with his bow, plunking another arrow into the human, dropping him to the ground in the middle of all the sleeping treelings. He looks up at Glansandi who has already turned towards the rapidly retreating Daisy and Dexter. "Nice shot, but we cant fight them all! We need to flee! Now!!!"

As quickly as the tree folk entered the fight, they disperse almost as fast, scattering back towards the bushes and huts where they can jump up into their trees again. Of the fifty or so that entered the fracas, other than the 5 sleeping around the dead mage, only 2 of their numbers appear to have fallen in the fight. They screech and squawk as they quickly climb back up to the safety of their higher perches.

The remaining pirates stop their attacks on the fleeing creatures when they see the party heading back into the jungle. They immediately give chase with unfriendly shouts at the groups backs. "They are in league with the tree rats! Kill them! Kill them all!!!"

The Elf reaches out and grabs two of the sleeping tree creatures and runs at top speed towards the jungle where his rescuers are heading. He pauses at the entrance to hand off the creatures to the other two that are standing there. (D&D) Unshoulders his bow and preps to fire more arrows at the closest pirates.

Dexter Broadleaf

In a stage whisper for Daisy's ears, Dexter says,"You're right. We can't outrun them. But we have enough head start for them to lose sight of us. Then we cut hard left, put another 15 or 20 feet behind us and then duck and freeze. What do you think? But we, at least should stick together."

Daisy

Which Phanatons? Two of the sleeping ones or others?

Bless your heart, darlin'. We can't manage a fighting retreat! Just run!

Saying this, Daisy plunges into the jungle, zig-zagging and ducking under as many thorny brambles and vines as she can.

Dexter Broadleaf

"I know... I'm not talking about a fighting retreat. I just think running through the jungle will give them enough noise to follow us, with their long legs. I'm thinking just duck off to the side, hide, and let them run past us."

Cealwyn Blackthorn

"Works for me." Cealwyn sprints toward their furry, bespelled allies and grabs one in each hand, then hustles toward the tree line and pauses to deposit them gently on the ground beside the newly-freed elf. Cealwyn acknowledges the elf with a nod. "You're deadly with that bow, mate." He limbers up his bow and scans the motley horde of pirates to select a target.

Edited to have Cealwyn try and save two of the tree-folk before he flees. If that isn't do-able, no worries. I'll just have him flee.

"I am Darklin Sylvanus, Mage and Fighter. What do you all think about cutting around to the right and taking the river back to town. We could wait until they all are looking for us here in the jungle and sneak back into camp and see what they have in that hatch hut. I would like to get my hands on that Mage's spellbooks. Don't think he will need them anymore. Talking while firing bow.

[1d20+3] = 1+3 = 4 first arrow

[1d20+3] = 10+3 = 13 second arrow

[1d6] = 5 damage if it hit

Watching The Watchers

The rescued elf lunges forward and grabs two of the sleeping tree folk before heading back towards the jungle. The shaking and lifting is enough to awaken them both, and they don't seem too happy about being carried. The squirm and flail around wildly, causing the elf to drop them both. They quickly rush back to awaken their friends before the pirates have time to kill them all. One more of their numbers is cut down, but the other four manage to leap away from the danger.

Seeing the elf fleeing towards their position, Cealwyn fires off another arrow as cover fire until the group is together again at the edge of the jungle.

Constable Glansandi follows the pair of halfling's as they quickly scamper into the jungle and disappear into the foliage, hoping the others will follow suit. Cealwyn greets the newcomer and compliments his skills with a bow. The rest of the pirates chase after them, swinging swords and thrusting spears, ready to kill the people who just took out their mage.

Darklin2 posted 2 actions this round, Grabbing the phanaton and fleeing, and then stopping to fire his bow. So, I ignored the second action. If the two of you want to stay behind and shoot at them from the tree line, I will allow you to use those same rolls for this round, if you wish. The others have fled off of the map and do not appear to be followed.....yet.

Dexter Broadleaf

Dexter follows his own advice, heading into the cover deep enough to hide himself, and then taking a sharp left turn and running about 15 feet to throw off anyone chasing him in a straight line. He then ducks and goes quiet, listening for either the rest of his company, or to see what the pirates do.

Cealwyn Blackthorn

"Cealwyn," he replies, shouldering his bow. "And that's a fine idea, but I fear we've been left behind." He glances into the jungle, then back to the horde of angry pirates.

"Come on, then, you scoundrels!" He calls as he dives into the undergrowth and heads in a straight line very slightly west of his companions. "This way, you filthy cowards!" He makes noise and shakes the brush for the first twenty feet to ensure his retreat is visible in hopes of leading the pirates away from the rest of his party and circling back to find them later.

Once into the jungle, though, Cealwyn settles into a dead run as quietly as he may with each ground-eating stride.

Darklin will run straight into the jungle as fast as he can. Shouldering bow and after putting distance between him and the entrance to the jungle.

Dexter darts off and finds an area large enough for most of the group to reconvene. He waves each of them over with the help of Glansandi, before everyone can disperse.

Cealwyn and Darklin continue their pleasantries as they follow the others initially, finding this jungle far too thick and overgrown for anything close to running. They have a difficult time getting through the first few feet of the tangled underbrush and are barely able to keep up with the much smaller halflings.

Once everyone is as close to being back together as they can get in the thick, bug ridden jungle, they notice something strange with their pursuers. The pirates have all stopped the chase and are now assembled at the edge of the jungle, looking into the dark foliage. Over the cacophony of jungle noise and the constant buzz from the indomitable insects, the group hears one man shouting over the other voices.

“Stop! Nobody follows them! That’s an ambush if I ever seen one! Fall back! We need to regroup and figure out what just happened!”

Constable Glansandi whispers as loud as he dares. “We need to get out of here! I don’t believe that man!”

Actions?

You are all now south of the map, a few dozen feet into the unrelenting jungle. I wanted to give you a chance to regroup to minimize confusion, but feel free to try anything you’d like from this point.

Cealwyn Blackthorn

Forging ahead as best he may in the unrelenting snarl of foliage, Cealwyn cuts a wide arc back toward the direction taken by Dexter, nodding as he sees the halfling waving them over. He slows his pace to a stealthy walk, eyes following the sound of the pirate's voice as he rejoins the company.

"Cagey folk, these pirates," he whispers with a lazy smile. "I'm with Glansandi. We hit them hard; it's time to vanish."
