Varas awakens, bleary-eyed. Sleep was fitful as his imagination ran wild about the contents of the chest.

He will check the lock for traps again (if allowed).

Ability check [1d100] = 99 egads!

And will try to pick the lock

Ability check [1d100] = 81

March 11, 1 VC - 7:10am

Vars needs to increase in level before he can try to find traps on it again.

No luck picking the lock, either. Other ideas?

Frustrated by his weak skills, he borrows the battle axe from Dorvar and hacks open the chest.

March 11, 1 VC - 7:20am

Varas hacks at the front of the box several times until he manages to get through the front to clear the lock from the wood. There is a tinkling of broken glass as the axe blade slices through, and when the party opens the chest they find a good sum of glass shards and some dark liquid soaking into wood and a greenish-brown tooled-leather tome, alongside which rests a glass vial full of blood-red liquid.

Aaaahhhhhh!!! What are you doing you big gorilla? Now look what you did! Those must be magic potions you just broke. And now it's soaking everything else! Sheesh!

Wendall grabs the book out of the trunk and tries to prevent the liquid from hitting any of the pages. He will try to wipe it off with his sleeve and make it dry before opening it.

Im surprised these things survived at all seeing how nasty those lizard brutes are.

The time is easy enough to dry given how quickly Wendall snatches at it. He discovers that the leather is very old and has a dusty air about it, and bears a wizard's Sigil on the front cover that he does not recognize.

"We can't keep carrying this damn chest around, Wendall! Your arms weren't going to make it much longer" growls Varas, face flushed. "Besides, the book survived. Isn't that where your kind keep your magical scribbles you so jealously guard? You should thank me!"

"Our pace will be much faster now that we're rid of that chest. I'll leave the intact potion to whomever wants it. I'm more interested in the next direction we take. Continue southwest?" he suggests.

Yes, I'm sure it's nothing you would be able to understand anyway. And you're right, the book is much more manageable than that big crate.

Wendall can't resist taking a look at the first few pages as the others discuss the next direction the party will take.

Wendall opens the book and finds that it is a spell book, with two first level spells and one second level, none of which he recognizes.

Wendall stuffs his new book into his backpack.

To be honest, I got a little turned around out here. I'm up for whatever direction you guys decide on. I've got lots of food left.

Dorvar grabs the remaining potion. Since nobody else seems interested, I'll carry this for now. As far as direction, southwest seems as good a choice as any. As long as we travel further from the greenskins, I'm fine. Like Wendall, I have sufficient food to travel for several days yet so that is of no concern.

March 11, 1 VC - 8:10am

The party decamps and heads toward the southwest, within ten minutes catching sight of a tall, gnarled tree standing alone at the top of a rise straight ahead of the party perhaps two miles distant. When the tree is still a mile distant, Dorvar's keen dwarves senses perceive faint vibrations in the earth. The party is being pursued at top speed by something massive.

Seeing the look on the dwarf's face, Varas grabs his bow and an arrow from his quiver. "What's wrong, Dorvar?"

To give everyone the opportunity to post today if they like, Dorvar indicates that there is something large behind the party moving quickly. Certainly larger than a horse and rider.

Is there anywhere we can see to take cover?

The moor is full of wrinkles and dips, but a mounted rider would have a fair chance of seeing over the small variations in terrain. There appears to be a small collection of boulders or shoulders of exposed stone under the branches of the tree up ahead.

"Let's spread out" suggests Varas. "Mages won't be able to target us all, and if these are swift enemies they won't be able to run us all down at once."

If we think we can make it to the boulders in time, Varas would suggest that instead but it doesn't sound possible.

It being early in the day, the sun's low angle will likely cast shadows on the ground. Varas will get about 40 yards away from others in the party and try to hide in the early morning shadows, keeping his bow close at hand.

Harold makes for the outcropping of rocks, hoping to hide as the rider goes past.

Dorvar tries to hide in one of the wrinkles in the terrain, away from the rest of the party. He is looking for a spot opposite Varas, hoping the approaching creature ends up between them. He will draw and ready his crossbow, trying to stay low, peering over the edge and using the terrain for cover.
