Yes, a recheck will be required. I'm an idiot for not mentioning it originally. So, everyone is currently considered to be back to full strength after the last bout, but will be required to re-check versus poison. All rolls will be still be made with a +4 modifier:

Gwillt: 14-4 = 10
Garth: 10-4 = 6
Shannigans: 13-1 = 12-4 = 8
Ewell: 14-4 = 10
Kaltar: 10-4 = 6
Strom: 14-2 = 12-4 = 8
Alordan: 14-4 = 10
Epsilon: 10-4 = 6
Grimnail: 14-4 = 10

Just as with previous checks, a failed saving throw results in a temporary loss of strength, but you can continue to function. If you failed your saving throw, please roll 1d6 (posting your results) and subtract that amount from your natural strength ability score (yes, the penalty for a failure will likely be different than what was experienced in other encounters). See 01. Ability Scores for your new modifiers.

---

The bad guys act first.

Five of the troglodytes (e1, e2, e3, e4, e6) move to swarm Grimnail. The barbarian is able to launch a javelin at one of his attackers before it reaches him and strikes it hits with deadly precision, killing it (e3). The remaining four split, with two on each side of the brave warrior. Grimnail, whose initial instinct was the move west, has full defenses against the first three attackers (e1, e2, e6), but not the fourth (e4), which is able to successfully rake the back of the half-orc (-2).

A half dozen of the nasty beasts (e5, e7, e8, e8, e10, e11) pass the already occupied Grimnail to the right. A pair of them (e5, e11) happen to notice Shannigans and turn their attention towards the halfling. One (e11) stops short and fires a javelin at the caught-off-guard halfling while the other (e5) closes in with its natural weapons. The javelins sails safely over the halflings' head, but a viscious bite (-6) sends the halfling tumbling to the ground.

The four (e7, e8, e8, e10) troglodytes that passed the barbarian close on Ewell and Kaltar with a pair going after each. The pair (e7, e8) moving left to attack Kaltar and the other pair (e8, e10) against Ewell have similar plans; one will fall back and launch a javelin while the other closes to engage. Remarkably, in both cases, the javelins thrown strike their targets... but hit the troglodytes closing on the actual targets, scraping them. Ewell is able to escape all harm but Kaltar does get scratched (-1).

The final pair (e12, l4) split off to the left. They stop short and hurl javelins at Gwilt. The first projectile strikes and sticks into the wood facing of the outhouse while the second does catch the ranger in his exposed shoulder (-4).

---

Okay, now the group (except for Grimnail, whose action I already processed, and Shannigans (sorry!)) can respond (after saving versus poison at +4) to see if the stench overcomes them.

It will then by time for round two.

Strom and Epsilon are closer to the fire and should be a round away from reaching a better vantage point of the situation.

Saving Throw [1d20] = 15

Gwillt grits his teeth in pain as the javelin strikes him in the shoulder.

"Where do you smelly lizards come from, anyway?"

He charges them, swinging his scimitar at whichever one hit him...

To Hit, Scimitar [1d20+4] = 15+4 = 19

Damage, Scimitar [1d8+3] = 6+3 = 9

Kaltars save:

Saving Throw [1d20] = 9

hmm don't say I actually made it!

He attacks the foe in front of him:

Mace Action To Hit [1d20] = 2 Dam [1d6+1] = 1+1 = 2
should have known - what the dice god gives with one roll, he takes with the next - unbelievably poor!

Alordan is going to move south to the left of the Bronze Goat Inn. He'll keep moving to the southwestern part of the bldg to flank the main body.

Saving throw [1d20] = 6
stench weakener [1d6] = 2

Ewell wasnt ready for the stench of e9 as he came in for an attack. Luckily, though, it didnt zap him of as much of his strength as earlier.

longsword to hit (+3 str bonus): [1d20+3] = 4+3 = 7 , damage1d8 (+4 str bonus): [1d8+4 ] = 6+4 = 10
But, it affected him enough to not get a good swing in against the trog...

edit to add-str bonus now +2, damage now +3

Since Strom and Epsilon moved towards the fire are they in range of the stink?
Or are they running into more stink? :o

Indeed.

We would have greatly benefited from working together as a team (allow ranged attacks and an AOE spell from the caster before engaging, to soften them up, for example). Hopefully it will just be a lesson learned and not a reboot of the game...

spoken, er...TYPED, like a true meta-gamer! :D Grim is no tactical specialist fighter/Cavalier/Paladin. He's a savage orc. Even Half-orcs tend to be narrow minded with their eyes on "the now" with little thought to consequence. And he is only first level. :)
Grimnail will follow a strong leader but he knows of none here right now, so it's all "no guts no glory."

EDIT: didn't mean to sound preachy.
Nothing but love.
Hopefully Grim will live long enough for some patient war commander to teach him tactics.

I dont think those bolded words go together. My Cav is only disciplined enough not to run into arrows or sleep spells. Other than that, he is right with you...

I think there should be a balance between playing "in character" and "character survival". Too much "in character" means you don't survive long. Too much "character survival" and you don't have any fun playing your character.

While it is true Grim would know nothing of the others' battle tactics, the rest of the party has been in two significant large fights up to this point (three, if you count the first part of this trog battle) and has seen the caster use AOE spells to great effect. We should have worked together better, relying on him to reduce the number of trogs we had to face all at once. That is character knowledge, not meta-gaming.

One could assume their half-orc character grew up in a tribe where battles were common, as were battle tactics, such as using ranged attacks prior to melee engagement. Then that, too, is not meta-gaming. This is how you balance playing "in character" with "character survival". Or, at least, it is how I do.

Objectively speaking, I think Grimnail played his character perfectly. Let's not forget, a barbarian is not about to do a magic-user any favors (like suppressing its natural instinct to attack).

Gwillt grits his teeth in pain as the javelin strikes him in the shoulder. "Where do you smelly lizards come from, anyway?" he asks rhetorically as he bursts out from behind his cover and swings his scimitar at the troglodyte (l4) that struck him moments earlier. A wicked slash hobbles the beast, but it manages to stay on its feet.

Ewell and Kaltar wage battle against the smelly creatures they're matched up against, but neither are able to land a successful strike, with the dreadful stench no doubt contributing to Ewell's lack of success.

Garth sees an opportunity to sling a bullet at the scaly foes that stopped short of engaging Kaltar and manages to deposit a bullet upside the head of the beast, definitely getting its attention.

Okay, round 2. I need a new initiative roll and all second round actions. Computer +1 and wolfpack, I probably won't have your details until tomorrow.
