No strength does not increase hit or damage for ranged weapons. ranged weapons to hit bonus is the missle adjustment from dex.

Teramis wrote:WP, do you let Strength bonuses modify damage on a ranged attack for a thrown weapon? In particular I'm wondering if I throw a hand axe, if any STR modifiers apply. I'm adding +1 for the extra proficiency training to hit, but is there anything in addition to that?
You know, I've always played it like that as well, as does everyone in my other game groups. I was so sure of this that I thumbed threw the PHB, DMG & UA to confirm but couldn't find it. Wonder if this was just a common house rule or maybe an import from 2E or a fighter suppliment?

I never played it this way, but always heard that too. Thrown is STR, shot is DEX -- unless you had one of those gnollish Great Bows or whatever that added STR bonuses. Thought it was a rule too... hmmm, I'll pull up my PDFs! :)

DMG page 64
Strength Bonus Considerations: The strength bonus for hitting and
damage does not apply to missiles unless the character so entitled
specifically takes steps to equip himself or herself with special weapons to
take advantage of the additional strength. This will result in the weapon
having an additional chance to hit and do the additional damage as well.
In no event will it add to the effective range of the character’s weapon.
Thus, the character will employ a heavier missile or a more powerful bow
and heavier arrows or larger sling missiles to gain the advantage of
strength. To do so, he or she must obtain the special weapon or weapons,
and this is within the realm of your adjudication as DM as to where and
how it will be obtained, and how much cost will be involved.

I only allow the special wepaons to be purchased for missle only weapons such as bows, crossbows, and slings. This can't be done for multi use wepons such as daggers, axes, or spears. and the cost is very expensive.

I think that pg 64 rule is obviously written thinking only object-propelled missiles, and doesn't even begin to consider direct muscle-propelled force, which is why the rule about STR bonus to hit for something thrown became so common.

And as the DM your rule... well rules, but this is an interesting discussion. I found a couple other vague kind of things in the DMG:
DMG page 126 wrote: Giant Strength: When a giant strength potion is consumed the individual
gains great strength and bonuses to damage when he or she scores a hit
with any hand-held or thrown weapon. It is also possible for the person to
hurl rocks as shown on the table below.
DMG page 128, re: magical axes wrote: Axes (hand, not battle) can be thrown up to 3" with the hit probability
bonus, but no damage bonus.

Axe +2, throwing, is a hand axe which can be thrown up to 6" at the
same hit probability as if it were swung by the character, and the standard
damage bonus.
So it kind of goes back and forth.

I don't see how to sticky a thread, I send a PM to the board admin asking how.

I'm sorry, I don't have the DMG to refer to for the larger context this is quoted from. Does this statement (pg 128):

Axes (hand, not battle) can be thrown up to 3" with the hit probability
bonus, but no damage bonus.

- refer to *magical* handaxes or normal ones? If normal, it seems that answers my earlier question about throwing axes, if WP agrees (i.e, yes the STR-based to hit bonus would apply)

I have always used dex bonus to hit for thrown weapons strength adjustments don't apply, I am going to rule that is how it is done here as well.

Wolf, I'm going to be heading up to my buddy's farm for New Year's so I'll be AFK until late Sunday night. Vik would like to stay in town to train but will go along with the party if they're called into service.

Happy New Year's and a Big Huzzah to all!! :)

I rolled my lvl one hit points for Cilian and posted it under the Cilian and Harold thread.

Updated my character sheet with his default memorized spell, but what he's really going to do is on the first day he possibly can Cilian is going to cast Armour on himself (that will give him an effective armour class of 6). Then the next day he will prepare Burning Hands.
