Vali (npc)

"Laddie, we're hardly in the wilds. The village is right over there," the little gnome points west, across the fenced fields and, indeed, Tegel Village is still visible in the distance.

Now pointing south, Vali says, "See that copse of trees? The Marsh is on the other side. I usually use a trail that goes in from the west, so we should circle around now."

And Vali leads the group to the southwest, skirting the trees. As the group approaches the trees, a humanoid form emerges - running, sword held high!

(Surprise? No.)
Surprise? PCs [1d6]=4, Enemy [1d6]=4

The enemy is hideously pale, skeletal, and wearing broken armor, wielding a jagged sword.

(INITIATIVE - Enemy goes first.)
INITIATIVE - PCs [1d6]=4, Enemy [1d6]=5

The pallid horror runs toward Ellith, sword swinging!
To hit [1d20+2]=8+2=10, damage [1d8]=4

The sword whistles harmlessly past the elf.

(PCs can act now. What will your character do?)

I am ok with the proposed marching order!

Ellith swings his blade in a wide arc, aimed at the foe who just attacked him - "What manner of apparition is this?!" - but misses his mark.

[1d20+1]=6+1=7, [1d8+1]=3+1=4

Myrrh

Myrrh moves to attack the "creature". He will also attempt to determine if it is undead.

Adds another +2 to hit if it is Chaotic.

Brondulm

Moves to the left on the path so he has a clear field of view of the tree line behind the intruder.

He raises his bow. Keeps his eyes on the tree line to make that any of these unknown humanoids try to join their friend they will catch an arrow.

Lia

Lia hated few things more than undead aberrations, the complete reverse of all she worshipped. She readies her shield and hammer and moves to meet the creature's attack.

Attack: [1d20]=14 Damage: [1d6]=5

Round#1

The pallid horror swings wide, missing Ellith.

Ellith likewise swings wide in response.

Lia tries to hammer the monster, whose pitted and scarred shield deflects her blow.

But Myyrh's sword strikes true! He pierces the creature with his blessed blade, causing pieces of its decaying flesh to fall away! (Damage 5)

Brinna raises her shield and rushes forward to stab with her own sword.
To hit [1d20+1]=5+1=6, damage [1d8+1]=2+1=3
The Amazon misses.

Vali draws forth an arrow and nocks it. He draws his bowstring back, and the arrow scintillates in a swirl of colours before settling on grey.
Chromatic arrow [1d8]=6, reuse? [1d6]=1
The arrow flies forth, striking unerringly, in a shower of sparks; the arrow falls to the ground after striking. (Damage 8, total of 13)
Chromatic arrow -Grey damage [2d6+1]=7+1=8
The creature's sword and shield immediately clang against its armor! It pulls impotently trying to dislodge them.

Faron takes this opportunity to pounce! The elven dog leaps upon the undead creature, knocking it to the ground!
Faron pounce [1d20+2]=16+2=18, damage [2d4]=7, save vs knockdown [1d20]=16

The group hears a sickening crunch as the last bit of unlife flees the creature's crumbling remains. (Damage 7, total damage 20)

Vali walks over to pick up his arrow, kicking the dusty ashes from the fallen enemy before returning to the group.

COMBAT ENDED

Myrrh

"Anyone injured by the unholy creature?"

Myrrh searches it.

It is literally crumbling to ashes as you approach, leaving nothing behind.

Vali leads the group around the trees and onto the barely visible trail leading into the Derfingel Marsh.

Go to Chapter 1. Chapter 1: All I Ever Hear About is A Marsh. A Marsh! A Marsh! A Marsh!
