Euripides Nereos
Euripides will inspect the ground near the poles. He's looking for any tracks or remains, or anything else that seems out of place.

Searching The Coastline
Morning, Cloudy, Cool
Valkrina urges the others off the open beach, finding a place near the trail to keep watch and wait out their scouts search.
Euripides looks over the poles in the water, finding no evidence of recent use or remains of any kind. Any guess as to their use would be a grim one.
Drest finds what appears to be bear paw prints scattered here and there around the end of the dirt trail, maybe a few days old. There are also two groves cut into the ground the lead from the water and run up the trail, possibly confirming the suspicions of small water craft nearby.
The trail is clearly maintained by someone periodically, as the underbrush is cut back fairly consistently by a bladed instrument. There is evidence of normal forest animal activity, but the grooves in the dirt disappear a few dozen yards up the dark forest trail.

Valkrina
After Drest has been designated team scout she will advance behind him up the trail or wait in the undergrowth at his signal.
While hidden she picks out a notebook and makes some drawings and notes of the fauna and flora she spots.
"Apollonius, can you recognise any of the famed lotus varieties? I know they are compounds in spell craft and perhaps as a man of learning you have come across them in your studies?" she asks and points to the unidentified blossoms that grow in the forest.

Drest
Talking softly, "People maintain the trail and have dragged small water craft through. We need to be very careful if we take the trail. There is bear sign so we may have a chance at some meat but I would rather find some other game as bear are dangerous."

Xenos
"Perhaps we should avoid the trail then. Continue on round the beach and hope we see some game, or maybe we can catch some fish, although I will admit I do not know how. This type of land is foreign to me, having been brought up in the desert"

Would Apollonius need to make a check of some flavor to see what he knows on the topic of the lotus?

Sure.
He would know any normal mundane information about such things, but lets see if he knows anything about specifics.
Give me a [4d6] roll against his Intelligence. (you want to roll low)

Bears? Bears are big animals, right? Very dangerous? I like the idea of staying away from the trail, then.

"Lets keep moving along the coast then." Drest leads the way.

The mage shakes his head. "I fear my studies have not included much regarding the different varieties of lotus."

Ok, it seems we are leaving exploring the trail and where it leads to go further round the coast. The bard follows in line behind the scout, putting away her sketches of lotus blossoms.
"Yes, hunt for food. Crab, lizard, turtle, seal meat? Kelp is good if cooked right. Coconuts." she tries to sound positive about the food resources we could find.

Searching The Coastline
Mid Morning, Cloudy, Cool
With the first few yards of the dirt trail revealing only boat grooves and bear prints, the party decides to move back out of the tight forest so they can continue searching the coastline.
Leaving the strange poles sticking up from the water behind them, they continue down the stony beach, heading even further away from the shelter of their rocky cave.
After about a mile of walking along the shore, they are able to salvage a bit more tangled line, one rusting metal tankard, and a roughly 6 foot by 9 foot section of heavy sailcloth with a few holes torn into it. None of it is recognizable, and neither is the badly rotting beached carcass of a small squid-like sea creature they find.
Along one particularly straight stretch of stony shoreline, the party happens along a fresh kill. There is a large, bloody carp-like fish at the edge of the tree line with puncture holes along its length, and its head completely torn off, nowhere to be seen.
Before they have a moment to discuss their find, Drest spots movement about 100 yards further up the beach. After silently urging everyone into the cover of the foliage, the unsavory Pictish scout peers out again, seeing what appears to be a man, stumbling towards them, pointing around while speaking aloud, apparently to himself.

Valkrina
Rolls up the sailcloth and stuffs it on her pack.
It will double as a group poncho until she can fix it to a mast. At least the additional stuff can go towards the boat build.
Anybody want the tankard?
She takes cover as directed and watches the crazy dude on the beach.

Drest hides but so he can watch the newcomer approach. He will try and listen and see if he can tell what he is saying.

Euripides Nereos
The Atlantean will grab the tankard. No point letting something go to waste- with their limited resources, who knows what may come in handy! As they realize there is someone else on the beach, he will hide in the vegetation, keeping a wary eye on the odd newcomer.

Searching The Coastline
Mid Morning, Cloudy, Cool
While everyone quickly moves into the foliage at the edge of the shoreline, the strange man continues walking up the beach towards them. Drest hides closest to the tree line, trying to catch anything the stranger is saying.
Once he gets much closer, within about 20 feet or so, the Pict hears a cacophony of what seems like simple gibberish. Nothing the man is saying makes any sense, but he does repeat a few things that the scout can pick out, including the words "Vikings", "invasion", "cannibals", "longhouse", and something called "Onja".
The man continues to point around and shout, seeming quite crazed, but he doesn't appear to notice the concealed group at all.
