Ingulfr

Ingulfr moves to check on the closest down caravan member. Seeing if he can do anything for them.

"Ulfr, keep an eye out and make sure they are not just regrouping to come at us again."

Hektor and Tulius

While Tulius remains on guard and watching the ogre and remaining bugbears flee, Hektor surveys the aftermath of the fight, checking with Ingulfr if any are in need of assistance. Perhaps his healing powers can save someone's life, or ameliorate their wounds.

I think we both managed to miss every single attack. Impressive.

Martin
The MU continues his lookout to ensure no baddies double back.

Iacchus
He joins the other cleric in tending to the wounded.

Three guards died in the fight. Five other guards are wounded. One in particular is barely conscious. He sits on the ground, leaning back against the wagon and moaning in pain as he clutches at his wounds. The other four aren't looking much better.

Svenson and some of the other guards gathers up the bodies of the fallen. He turns Hektor. "Tend to the wounded first of course, but once you have a chance, I would be grateful if you could say a blessing over our fallen. They idolized Muir, and fought with great courage. They would be honored to have one of her champions beseech her on their behalf."

Feel free to decide how and to whom you may wish to cast any healing spells. All the guards have 6 HP total. One guard has 1 HP left, 3 guards have 3 HP left, and 1 guard has 4 HP left.

Through a combination of pre-combat preparation (both in joining a merchant caravan, and preparing the camp), and tactical decisions, you managed to drive off an Ogre and 6 bugbears. The team earned a grand total of 1412 XP, with 8 characters (4 PC's + 4 henchmen), that's 176.5 XP each, rounded up to 177 XP. The henchmen only get half of that, so 88.5 XP, rounded up to 89 XP.

So the PC's get 177 XP, and the henchmen get 89 XP.

Ingulfr

He will use his 3 CLW spells on the guards. Starting with the worst injured and working to the least.

One of Anker's arrows, and Randall's sling bullet sting the ogre as the creatures flee, leaving the ogre's pained and angry roar as the last sign of the monsters before they vanish into the dark.

Meanwhile, Ingulfr gets to work healing as many of the guards as he can, and manages to fully heal the wounds of three of the most injured, leaving only two injured guards remaining. The guards look at Ingulfr in wonder as their wounds knit before their eyes, and the pain vanishes like it had never been.

"Thank you kind sir, thank you," says the guard who had been most injured, taking off his helmet and bowing his head. "I hope to prove worthy of the Allfather's blessing."

Martin descends from his perch, and Iacchus proffers healing to the other two injured guards:
[1d8]=1 [1d8]=3

But he will say his blessings to Demeter quietly to himself. :)

Hektor and Tulius

Some math:

CLW [1d8]=5 [1d8]=4 [1d8]=4
Guard 1 = Max hp now
Guard 2 = Max hp now
Guard 3 = Max hp now

But he will say his blessings to Demeter quietly to himself. :)
Guard 4 = 5 hp now
Guard 5 = Max hp now

So no healing seems to be needed from Hektor.

------------------------------------------

Tulius nodded approvingly at the parting shots from Randall and Anker - he seemed eager to give chase, but stood his ground - once the attackers are gone, he will search the bodies of the defeated bugbears.
archolewa wrote: Sat Feb 22, 2025 4:51 pmSvenson and some of the other guards gathers up the bodies of the fallen. He turns Hektor. Hektor inclines his head at Svenson's words, a gesture of acknowledgement rather than a formal bow. "I will. They deserve a good send-off."

After tending to the wounded, Hektor stands near the bodies of the fallen guards, his longsword resting casually against his shoulder. He looks at each of them in turn, a quiet moment of respect. Clearing his throat, he speaks in a clear, but conversational tone. "Muir," he begins, "these lads were good sorts. They did their duty, stood their ground, and fought bravely. They believed in what you stand for: honor, truth, and courage.".

"They weren't saints, mind you," Hektor continues, a hint of a smile playing on his lips, "None of us are" - he added - "But they had heart. They gave their all. So, welcome them, look after them. They've earned their rest." He nods once, a simple, heartfelt farewell.

Ingulfr

After Hektor says his words Ingulfr makes sure each of the dead guardsmen has a weapon in hand and says Odin's blessing over them. "May your journey to Valhalla be swift!"

Svenson nods. "Thank you kind sirs. Their families will be greatly honored to know such noble personages as yourselves gave them your blessing. We need to get the lads buried, so we'll be kicking off a bit late today."

While the guardsmen get to the sad work of burning their fellows and burying the ashes, Tulius takes a moment to search the bugbears. The bugbears wield nasty looking morningstars, and wear torn, disgusting gambesons leather armor, basically over their own thick, leather-like skin. Rifling through the bugbears pockets, Tulius finds a nice pile of coins: 46 silver pieces and 14 gold pieces.

Svenson notes Tulius activities. "You fellas keep the spoils. Your healing brought a coupe of my folks back from wounds that might have killed them, or even hobbled them, and it was your sharp eyes and good preparations that saved us from a far nastier fight."

While Tulius is dragging the bugbear corpses away from the road, Hektor, no stranger to manual labor, and really a simple man, helps with burying the corpses.

@archolewa - is the morningstar 2-handed?

Tulius nods, then splits the coins among their group (think it amounts to 1 gold and 8 silver pieces each - rack it up boys! :D)

I was under the impression they get full shares of the loot, but half XP because they are henchmen?

I usually see half for both but figured I would check. It doesn't mater to me as long as we are consistent. Are we keeping a party fund?

Randall and Anker

Randall offers his share to Swenson for the families of the deceased guards, and asks whether the caravan has any stores of ammunition, especially arrows.

This is up to you guys. The baseline is half a share, so that's what your henchmen are expecting as a minimum. If you want to be more generous, well I'm sure that will have a positive impact on any future morale checks. :)

Hektor and Tulius

"We should try to grab whatever rest we still can" - Hektor clears the sweat from his brow, after assisting with the burial - "We'll resume the watches as needed"

He paused for a few moments observing the makeshift graves, then returned to the group.

Continue the watches or jump to the next day? Let's go :)

Svenson's eyebrows go up. "Thank you good sir. Their families will appreciate it greatly. Unfortunately, we do not have any arrows. Archers are expensive, and I don't count any amongst my guards."

Ythgar, make sure to mark the XP for that gold, even though Randall is offering his share to Svenson.

Svenson shakes his head. "No rest for the weary I'm afraid. It's gotten to full morning by now. We really must get moving. These are dangerous lands, and our fight may very well draw other critters. Let's get a move on people! Sooner we're north of Horsefly Swamp, the better."

The caravan resumes its journey north. The lands around them are empty, save for the occasional deer, rabbits and other herbivorous animals. Nothing remotely dangerous so far as anyone can see. As the sun begins to wester, they cross the bridge over the Wild Edge River, and begin setting up camp.

"I figure about another day's travel," says Svenson. "Then we'll reach the third river. After that, we'll keep going north, and you'll want to head west along the river to Zelkor's Ferry."

The night passes uneventfully, though at one point in the middle of the night, the distant howls of wolves can be heard. Quite distant. Likely a pack hunting in the forests across the plains the west.

May 5th Rappan Athuk Campaign Year 1

The caravan continues north. Once again, the lands are calm and peaceful. The group finds some muddy bootprints along the edge of the road,
as well as old bloodstains and some damaged arrows that suggest a battle took place here, but it was many days ago.

Other than that, as the sun once again westers, the caravan sets up camp just south of the third river. Here, the river has narrowed, dove down, and cuts through a great, deep gorge spanned by a large stone bridge.

"This is where we will part ways," says Svenson. "But in the morning. Share our cooking fires one last night."

The night passes uneventfully, save for a moment when a chill briefly sweeps across the camp, that makes those on guard shudder and the rest murmur nervously in their sleep, and another when the dark shape of great wolves can be seen running past the camp and deeper into the wilds.

May 6th Rappan Athuk Campaign Year 1

Morning dawns. Svenson claps the adventurers on the shoulder. "It was good to have you with us. You are all courageous warriors, and smart too. Any time you're in Hopes Rest, inquiry after me. If I'm there I'll gladly share a drink, food, and of course, the opportunity to guard my caravan!"

He hands each member of the team, including the henchmen, 16 gp. "Thank you good sirs, and good luck."

With that, once he has answered any questions the team may have, he gives the command and the caravan continues its journey north across the stone bridge.

Hektor and Tulius

16gp added to each of Hektor and Tulius.

"Hope the remainder of your trip is a safe one, and that we meet again" - Hektor thanked Svenson - "What is your final destination again?"

@archolewa: We will set out toward the West, following along the south bank of the stream. Both Hektor and Tulius will first want to search if there is any sort of trail, even if old and poorly kept. Otherwise we will have to go cross country.
