Andron regards this new obstacle with curiosity. "The grate's construction suggests this passage is not typically used, rather it was secured indefinitely against intrusion. It also suggests there is at least one other means of entry to this area."

Theo just cant help himself before once again being shown up by the immense strength of the groups invisible thug. And he almost had it too.
BJ agrees with the wise assessment of Andron, inspecting the bolts in the grate carefully once she easily squeezes through the bent bars. "I knew it would be a good idea to bring you lot along with me. There is no way I could have done that alone."
The tunnel continues deeper into the darkness beyond the second obstacle, which goes along for another good while before ending at a normal looking wooden door. BJ doesn't even ask for help with this one, reaching for the handle to pull it open after giving it a good look. It opens to reveal a wide staircase that leads downward into more darkness.
At the bottom of a short flight of stone steps is another door, though this one is much larger than the last. Another oversized iron padlock secures this door, and something strange can be seen on the wall next to it. At first you think it might be a round window of some kind, but the surface is black as pitch and absolutely nothing can be seen beyond. It is between 2 and 3 feet wide, and there is clearly something solid preventing ingress.
BJ raises one perfect eyebrow as she looks over the oddity. "Now what do you suppose that is? It looks.........unwholesome to me."
He intensely studies the pitch black anomaly, using his staff to gently tap the invisible barrier preventing access. The oversized padlock then captures his attention as he stoops to thoroughly examine it. "This lock is too obvious. It is rather redundant if an intruder is able to crack the initial padlock on the grate outside ... almost inviting an attempt to unlock it."
He casts MU Detect Magic and scans the area.

Theo makes himself useful by holding his glowing bastard in just the right position to best illuminate the lock and black area.

BJ studies the movements of the group with great interest, always willing to learn something she might not know yet.
Andron seems suspicious of the huge lock, even though it looks quite innocuous to the others. He takes a cautious route anyway and casts another spell to detect for magic in the area. The lock and door show no aura, but the black circle in the wall is another story completely. It glows with a heavy magical presence, but there is still no indication as to what it might be.
Torbath lights a torch, holding it close to the anomaly to test his own theory. As the heat from the flames get close, he does indeed witness the surface of the black spot shudder and undulate slightly, as if reacting to the sensation. The motion is slight, but noticeable to anyone watching carefully.
"The padlock and door are mundane. That, however ..."
He gestures to the inky circle.
"... is most certainly quite magical."
He watches with keen interest as the black anomaly reacts ever so slightly to Torbath's torch. "Fascinating ... I wonder if you held it closer one could reach inside? If so, I can use a spell to feel around without us actually risking a limb. In any event, I believe we should determine the nature of this anomaly before attempting the door."
Alordan stand back and watches being no use here. “It reminds me of that black thing that hypnotized us back in cat turd beach. Strange to think that’s when things made sense….relatively speaking..”
"Our thoughts are following the same path." he says to Andron
Torbath will continue to move the torch closer, and seeing if the black mirror will move more including to possibly reveal something hidden in the space and protected by the magical black substance.
Theo quietly observes, offering no distractions to the group's cogitations. Now that he trusts BJ more, he notices how exceptionally... comely, to say the least, she is.

He casts Telekinatus Manipulatum and presses his telekinetic "hands" onto the surface of the anomaly as Torbath applies the torch.
Level: 1
Range: 2" + 1/4"/level
Duration: 1 round/level
Area of Effect: 25 g.p. + 25 g.p. weight/level
Components: S
Casting time: 1 round
Saving throw: None
The Telekinatus Manipulatum spell creates a psionitropic matrix that interfaces with the somatic motor centers of the caster's brain. With undisturbed concentration, the magic-user can project a telekinetic manifestation of his or her hands to move or manipulate any objects within the spell's range. These telekinetic representations operate independently of each other, subject to range and area of effect. The total motive force that can be applied is limited by the area of effect in gold pieces weight. Maximum telekinetic movement is 2''/round at zero acceleration (i.e. objects cannot be "thrown" and loss of concentration immediately halts its momentum). The spell's psionitropic matrix also transmits tactile sensory input (e.g. texture, temperature, friction) of manipulated objects to the caster.
Intelligence and Wisdom ability scores of no less than 16 are required to cast this spell.

The very attractive BJ ignores the uncomfortable stares she is suddenly receiving from Theo, likely used to such things happening once she dons her tight leather armor. She watches Andron and the others with great interest, willing to let them try a few ideas before intervening.
Torbath keeps the torch close, watching the reaction from the strange black skin covering the round hole. The tarry substance doesn't burn like flesh would, but it does have a clear reaction to the torch.
While the others watch, Andron casts another of his unique spells, mentally sticking his conjured hands into the black goo. He feels a sensation of coolness and a slight resistance from the material in his mind before something very strange happens. As soon as he senses his psionitropic matrix, whatever that is, hit the surface of the rubbery material, he initially feels them being pulled in deeper before almost immediately losing the feeling of his spell all together. He feels no obstacles or side/back walls within, only more of the weird substance.
Unsure where his make believe hands actually are now, as he is no longer able to sense anything from them, the alien looking spell caster appears satisfied that he tried a spell for this instead of simply sticking his real hands inside.
He withdraws his hands as if extracting them from something and relays the sensations he felt to the others. "I cannot explain it, although I would certainly suggest not trying that with your real hands. Suggestions?"
"That's not bad idea, Mr. Maag. Perhaps tie one end of a rope to an arrow first, then see if we can pull it back out. As it's magical, it's unlikely to be a creature of some kind."
"It might actually be a portal. I will attempt an augury to guide us. In the meantime, I think it is safe to remove the padlock at this time."
Casts Augury about repeating the experiment using his real hands.
