001 Extolay/Lanth (1711) B55589A-A [045/1085]

The Ship With No Name emerges from Jump Space smoothly and begins to move through normal space. The main star in the system, a Red Dwarf, shines like a ruby behind a blue and green world off to your port side. To starboard you can just make out the tiny red dot of the red dwarf star that rotates around the Main. Six rocky worlds lie hidden in the dark orbiting the Main while an asteroid belt is a hidden hazard orbiting close to the Secondary. The Ship's Radar tags each and waits to display them on the Sensors screen for the crew.

While on the bridge Flighty is at the Pilot's console and Donovan is on Sensors/Comm while Sigrun is seated at the Weapons/Security console. Zaki is in sickbay, Doug is in Engineering and Karcsi is in the Commons when the ship emerges from jump space with a slight, stomach twisting, shudder and you find yourselves in Extolay.

You know it's Extolay because your screen light up with radio signals from the blue and green world hanging in space roughly 1.5 million klicks from you. The signals are the standard "Welcome to Extolay, contact Imperial Space Control on 1450, and don't forget to turn on your Transponder." sort along with a number of encrypted messages bouncing from planet to orbiting ships and from ship to ship in orbit.

The lights across the boards are all green and Doug reports the same from Engineering and tells Flighty over ship's comm, "Ok, jump drive off and Maneuver drive on. I'll be starting diagnostics on Jump Systems shortly, but prelims show everything A-OK back here."

A quick scan of the radar scope shows 7 ships in space near Extolay. One is a System Defense Boat in high orbit running silent other than it's Transponder. The other six are 4 Yachts and 2 Scouts in low orbit and they are the ones with encrypted radio messages bouncing around. It is a strange sight to see 4 Yachts in orbit around one planet! You wonder what's up?

Zaki, checks the Library again on Extolay and is reassured that this world should have the Technology to handle their unwanted Low Passengers that they've been carrying since exploring that wreak. The Low Passengers that you took aboard on Phlume are doing well, and getting the injured off the ship and doing some clean up should allow your ship to carry 6 more, instead of only 4 more, when you leave Extolay.

For some reason, that he can't put his finger on, Karcsi starts to feel a bit excited about being here. He thinks there should be some fun on Extolay, though he couldn't tell you why he feels that way.

Flighty grins to himself as Dealer's Choice comes up on the ship's Transponder identifying your ship and reporting that it just jumped from Phlume.

A patient giving no reaction is deemed "still hibernating". She is able to render this medical opinion and assistance due to the badge titled "Nurse".

Donovan reaches out to the local Mercantile network to check on cargo and passengers. He will also reserve a berth at the down port as well as fuel and normal hotel services.

I'm sure I was put aboard as a prisoner and so know nothing of the crashed trader's crew. I don't even know if they were merchants. Maybe they were bounty hunters or Imperial agents? Remember Flighty found that case and the covert pistol aboard? Doesn't seem very much like the gear a merchant would carry to me".

Karcsi is bombarded by "The Billion Credit Yacht Race" news when he pulls up the local network. It seems this is the latest stop on said race on it's way to the finish in the Regina system. Ten yachts started the race and after each race in a new system a yacht is eliminated. There are now only four yacht's are left with a race here, in Jenghe, and then the finale in Regina. The four yachts in orbit are the racers and the two scout ships are carrying reporters and camera crew that are part of several that record the races and get them out to the surrounding systems. This race is sucking almost all the bandwidth, so very little other news seems to be flowing on the local nets.

However, a bit of scanning around leads Karcsi to conclude there is little fun to be had on Extolay itself. Maybe at the big Naval Base orbiting the companion Red Dwarf in the system, but not here. Extolay appears to be a very "locked down" society. Lots of laws, strictly enforced, especially prohibiting any sort of weapon and that's very strictly enforced. He wouldn't recommend leaving the Starport Property on Extolay based on what he sees on the net, not unless you're willing to risk a long jail sentence for just about anything you can think of.

The crews of the yachts and the news folk, though, they might be interesting to meet. They are all staying at the Plith of Extolay. Karcsi doesn't know what a Plith is, but from context it's got to be a hotel of some sort and it's in the middle of the Starport that occupies an entire island in one of Extolay's oceans.

Donovan refers to the ship's Cargo Manifest and sees there are 3 Lots of Freight bound for Extolay. He sends messages to each of the contacts for the freight letting them know it has arrived and that he will send the berth information and let them know when they can pick up their goods. Next he arranges for a berth, fuel and inquires about hotels.

A berth and fuel are easily arranged. You'll be berthed on pad 14 and a 100 cr per day landing fee and 100 cr per week utilities fee apply. Each are due upon landing and will be automatically drawn from your account...and you need to set up a local account with, at least, 1,000 cr now before landing. Any funds not spent will be automatically refunded when you lift for departure. The account can be set up during this call with the port and the funds transmitted directly. Otherwise, you can remain in orbit and do your work from there.

The Port Operator, on tightbeam, is both helpful and chatty. Donovan learns that Extolay Starport occupies an island in one of the planet's oceans and unless there is urgent reason to leave travellers are strongly advised to remain on Starport property while on Extolay. He gets the impression, though it isn't directly said, that Extolay really should be Amber Zoned due to it's current legal policies toward everyone, but especially toward non-citizens. You get the strong feeling that you might have to work through a local Broker here to find any cargo to speculate on here as you won't be able to get out and beat the bushes yourself.

Donovan learns that "The Plith" is the best hotel at the Port, but there are a couple other, cheaper, hotels as well as a TAS and a Spacer's Rest Hostel where accommodations can be made on Port.

By the time Donovan gets off the channel with the Port Operator he sees he has four new messages. Two are from owners of the freight being delivered asking for berth and time info and two are from Import/Export firms asking if you are buying or selling anything here and if you have space for passengers and where you are bound next. While you are reading over these messages you get a final message from the other freight owner seeking information.

Donovan replies to the port operator to add 5000 credits to their account to cover consumables and incidentals. "What is with all of the yachts in orbit?" He informs Flighty of their berth and the arrangements he has already made. Donovan will contact the owners of the freight with their ETA and landing berth and reply to the brokers that they are looking to pick up speculative cargo and/or freight as well as low passengers headed to Jenghe or Regina.

"I wonder if dropping them off here would lead our pursuers to us," Zaki says pensively. "Still, I won't shut down their life support, and we need the additional low berth spaces." She playfully bumps her towering lover. "We can discuss your nursing duties in more detail later."

Flighty keeps the ship on it's designated course and brings it down to the island where the starport is located. Surrounding the high wire fence enclosing the port buildings and pads there are groves of small trees and other plants, all appearing almost black as you come down. The water of the seas surrounding the island are a very dark green under the red sun hanging large in the sky over head.

Donovan and Flighty scan the island as the ship nears landing and sees 8 ship's scattering around the Pads that are laid out in a large crescent around half of a much larger grassy area with even larger landing pads scattered around it. Those pads are for Naval ships when they visit Extolay.

The Pads for commercial ships are in the crescent. These pads are smaller, but still pretty large, at least, 100 yards across with that much space between each. Paved roads connect the Pads to Warehouses further back along with a large Terminal Building, located about midway along the crescent of landing pads...say between 8 and 9.

A few streets of commercial buildings are behind the Terminal. You can pick out what looks like a large hotel near the center of this small commercial district. Everything here is less vibrant and colorful with almost everything a muted shade of red except for a few signs and roofs that are a very bright red and really stand out.

Flight lands gently on Pad 14, as instructed, at the far end of the ships already on the tarmac.

The 16 landing pads are a little over half full with the ship arranged as follows. The ship types you can tell from their size and shapes, but not their names or any details as all the grounded ships have their transponders turned off. You'll need to walk around and use your Mark 1 sensors (eyes and ears) if you want to learn about them more.
