I Spy: A Rogue's Gallery

#1 Post by scarik »

This thread is because all current active PCs have made efforts to cultivate information sources. You can use this thread to share and collaborate on what their purposes are as you like. I will also use it to track organizations, groups and gangs that interact with the information economy and many less savory practices.

Short versions:

Jing Jiho's henchman Hemia's Henchman Gar is leader of a small guild in Borderton. They are a mercantile outfit with an ear to the ground.
(Winifred is his henchman while Malte is Drotik's?)

Earnan is leveraging his wide travels to cultivate contacts all over. As an Elf he has unique access to the Margrave's court.

Dramm and Barnaby are heroes to the smallfolk wherever they go due to their generosity. They can always find a warm hearth to sleep beside and the folk speak freely with them.

Morwen is a religious authority for her people. A band of Ravenfolk are active between Borderton and Ravenswell. They are curious, and can often be glimpsed eavesdropping from rooftops.

Aprod the thief-taker is the Margrave's head Bailiff and in charge of keeping the peace in Borderton.

Barnaby listens for discontent and dangerous schemes that might make for a rousing tale or tragedy. He's not so much an intervenor as an observer.

Dramm is more attentive to petty evils that might spin out of control. As a Paladin he's no priest, but as a fighter in his mid-40s he has some life experience. He tries to counsel wisdom when that's needed. He takes note of any serious sense of wrongfulness.
Neil Gaiman: "I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase 'politically correct' wherever we could with 'treating other people with respect', and it made me smile."..."I know what you’re thinking now. You’re thinking 'Oh my god, that’s treating other people with respect gone mad!'"

Yeah, well, Hemia might get a bit miffed if she finds out who Gar is associating with. Purely "Guildmaster business", I assure you. No one would believe it, but it is actually true.

Here's the OOC info presented in what the public "knows" and what is actually true. Let me know how you feel your characters would interact with them. Also, at the end, I'll add one that Scarik missed. :)

Public

"The Polite Society", a gentleperson's guild, recently bought a nice (2,000p) building and made several improvements. Malte, an esteemed German merchant, leads the group. His lady friend is a bit blunt but very possessive, and their bodyguard grunts if anyone gets too close. Malte comes from a wealthy family and is connected with the more important merchants in Borderton.

Actual

Gar, the "bodyguard", is the head of the spy ring that caught the baker in the Margrave's own household, set up the orcs and brigands with false information about the attack that killed them all, and turned a few other villains over to the Head Baliff. Winifred, Malte's "lady friend", actually is his snuggle-bunny. She's also a trained spy and key to the group's success. Malte is the front man with people skills, brains, and business acumen. There's a wild rumor that he flashed the entire town, but as he was weak and recovering from death wounds at the time, he claims no memory of it whatsoever.

As a wealthy person from far away he's treated a bit more upper class than he actually is, but he uses that to make things work better for as many people as possible. They recently allied with a madame in Borderton for mutual support. Gar also has "The Lads", a trio of 0 level theives willing to make a go of "adventure for the right cause".

Everyone knows that Sir Jiho and the Margrave's heir, Dame Fylla, are to be wed. Those who spend time talking to JJh about the larger political picture know that he's concerned about the Duke across the pass. Many of the brigands who slaughtered innocents at the logging camp came through Borderton as "pilgrims", and JJh suspects the Duke emptied his jails to get the pilgrimmage money and make trouble for his enemy the Margrave. The band in Borderton is tasked with ensuring nothing happens to Sir Jiho's beloved or her family. The mandate is simple; protect the interests of Jing and the Margrave.

And the other one

Squire Morphin is baseborn and untrained in the ways of knighthood. Morphin is JJh's squire and is there strictly on Morphin's unreasonable courage in taking a death blow meant for JJh. Later, during the Orc hunt Morphin fought a wereboar named Feher. It wasn't even a contest, Morphin was trashed easily. What got Feher's interest, and mercy, was that not only did Morphin fight on despite knowing he could not win, but that he did so to enable the troops he was commanding time to escape.

With the comments Earnan has made, and given JJh's desire for alliances, Morphin is heading back to the "Men of the Wilds" with a cow and as much good beer as the cow can carry. Morphin is going to let Feher know that Lord Jing respects the boundaries Feher has set ("don't come here or we'll kill you"), but that he is willing to help if desired.

Also, the group met Erikir on the last watchfort. He and his family are all Rangers, and there's a small group of them who also train with the army. They're the ones helping clear the road East, and soon West. They do a lot of scouting as well.

Earnan hasn't got far past the point of making contact and learning who's who.

In the immediate term he's going to be largely focussing on the Margrave's court and especially on the elves who visit from time to time. He's also going to make himself known to Malte & co. Since we all work, ultimately, for the same person, we should have enough contact to be sure we're not working at cross-purposes.

Agreed! While Malte & Co are as non-Elf savvy as the rest of town, after Earnan's venture with Lord Jing they will help Earnan as long as it doesn't violate their mandate. The same goes for Dramm, Barnaby, and Morwen.

Morwen really just uses her network because she wants knowledge - to know what's going on, what could potentially be troublesome, where and who to keep a watch on - and is perfectly willing to work with the others if it helps her keep herself in the know.
