The Bear - Round 0

Initially, Morvith's shouted warning and the Bear go, followed by the warning and we move to the initiative order listed below.

Initiative Order:
  • Tinu: [doc=][Roll1d20+1] = 17 + INT-18
  • The Bear: [1d20]=14
  • Mazie Thistle: [1d20+1]=12+1=13
  • Ferd: [1d20+2]=10+2=12
  • Morvith: [1d20-1]=9-1=8
The Bear rises to its full height and waddles forward with a fearsome growl swiping at Morvith with its claws.
To Hit: [1d20]=15 Damage: [1d6]=1
Although Morvith quickly moves back shouting, the claws rake his arm painfully, but doesn't drop the torch (T6) lighting up the area.

Tinu and Ferd have their bows up and ready. Mazie stands and puts herself between the bear and the two donkeys and begins to cast a spell...

End of Round 0 (surprise)

Everyone, give me an action and a move in either order. I'll deal with them in the initiative order above.

Ferd crouches on the bedroll, back against the wall and with as much cover as he can muster. He fires a shot at the bear and then his nimble fingers reload.

Morvith cries out in pain before he mutters strange syllables in a discordant tongue, and bolts of glowing energy streak from his fingers toward the bear. He immediately backpedals, trying to put one of the warriors between him and the bear.

Magic Missile: [2d20k1+4]=13+4=17, damage [1d4]=4
I am moving as far from the bear as I can, since Magic Missile reaches out to Far.

Round 1

Lights:
  • Morvith T4.4
Initiative:
  1. Tinu: [doc=][Roll1d20+1] = 17 + INT-18
  2. The Bear: [1d20]=14
  3. Mazie Thistle: [1d20+1]=12+1=13
  4. Ferd: [1d20+2]=10+2=12
  5. Morvith: [1d20-1]=9-1=8
Tinu draws back her bow and shoots at the bear. Tinu's Bow Shot: [1d20+3]=2+3=5 Damage: [1d6]=6 She misses and the arrow whizzes past the bear's head into the darkness.

The Bear waddles forward and swipes at Morvith as he tries to move away! Bear's Claws: [1d20]=8 Damage: [1d6]=4 The Bear's claw cleaves the air right in front of Morvith, doing no more damage but causing him to back peddle even faster!

Mazie standing in front of her donkeys weaves her fingers together and points at the Bear. A glowing bolt flies from her finger...Magic Missile: [1d20]=14 [1d20]=19 +3, Damage: [1d4]=2...hitting the Bear in the chest and causing it to stand up straight and roar!

Ferd crouches on the bedroll, back against the wall and with as much cover as he can muster. He fires a shot at the bear and then his nimble fingers reload.
Crossbow [1d20+3]=15+3=18 [1d20+3]=15+3=18 to hit [1d6]=2 damage
Ferd's bolt flies true hitting the Bear just below where Mazie's energy left a glowing mark on the Bear's chest!

The bolt of energy hits the Bear in the face and it staggers and stops its charge looking confused! Morvith doesn't actually notice as he concentrates on getting as far from the Bear as possible, coming to a stop only when he is behind Tinu!

Round 2

Lights:
  • Morvith T4.3
Initiative:
  1. Tinu: [doc=][Roll1d20+1] = 17 + INT-18 (LBow+4 d12, LS+0 d8, Dag+0 d4)
  2. The Bear: [1d20]=14 (Claws+2 d6, Bite+2 d6)
  3. Mazie Thistle: [1d20+1]=12+1=13 (Dag+3 d4, Spell+3)
  4. Ferd: [1d20+2]=10+2=12 CBow+3 d6, SSword+2 d6)
  5. Morvith: [1d20-1]=9-1=8 (Staff+2 d4, Spell+4)
Tinu holds her ground and fires again. Long Bow: [1d20+4]=17+4=21, Dam: [1d12]=7. The arrow penetrates the Bear's eye and goes straight to it's brain. It staggers, not knowing it is already dead!

Muscle memory causes the bear to stumble forward swinging it's claws, but blindly and hitting nothing.

Mazie casts Magic Missile again. Magic Missile: [1d20+3]=14+3=17 [1d20+3]=11+3=14, Damage: [1d4]=2

Ferd braces and fires again as well, then reloads the crossbow. Crossbow [1d20+3]=9+3=12 [1d20+3]=19+3=22 to hit [1d6]=3 damage] His bolt strikes home!

Morvith leans out around Tinu and fires off another bolt of arcane energy: Magic Missile: [2d20k1+4]=13+4=17, damage [1d4]=1 also hitting the poor bear!

The onslaught of firepower overcomes even the bears momentum and it topples over backward, truly dead!

The party stays alert wondering if more enemies will attack, but nothing is seen and nothing but their heavy breathing and the low crackle of the embers of the campfire reaches their ears. It seems calm has once more descended upon the forest...for now.

Now that the action is finished, Morvith actually feels some pain in his shoulder and notes a trickle of blood running down his arm

Tinu sighs in resignation as the bear goes down. "I would have preferred to not kill it, but that wasn't possible. Now, we need to take what we can from it, and drag the rest away before it attracts more predators. Miss Mazie, how much of it can your wagon carry?"

Morvith stalks over to the fallen beast and draws a wickedly-curved dagger, with which he begins to cut free a large, flat cut of muscle. He takes this back to the fire, where he lays it directly on the coals and burning branches, letting some of the blood from his own wound drip onto the flesh. Soon the odor of charred meat rises from the fire as the young mage kneels before it, chanting quietly.

"Can you butcher it, Tinu?" Ferd asks. "Or are you one of those vegetarian elves?"

"If we could get it properly butchered, it's a good thing to have. Maybe even for bargaining with Barklings or Goblins. And the head for a mount at the Adventurer Guild. I would hate to leave it to rot in the forest. "

"What hour is it anyway? Does anyone need more sleep or are we... just up?"

As you work away, you discover that this bear was a bit smaller than what you would consider a full grown adult, only about 300 pounds, while fully grown male black bears like this are usually between 400 and 500 pounds. Its older brother would have been much more hardy and harder to kill. Then there are brown bears which can drawf black bears weighing in at well over a thousand pounds.

Mazie builds up the fire and heats water for a strong hot drink she prepares for you all, "This tea is made from the leaves of the Yaupon bush. It will wake you up and give you energy, but doesn't have the bitterness of coffee or give you the jitters if you drink too much. It's one of the products from Jesselton I'll be trading for when we get there."

Before too long the party is back on the road. You will be travelling most of the day to reach Jesselton through dense forest along this narrow dirt path.

Re: The Delivery 6/21 [Robin]

#95 Post by Eris »

The afternoon found Robin sitting on a roof top next to the Great Gash...a deep and long canyon that marks the east edge of Jesselton. Looking down he sees the narrow river flowing through the canyon several hundred feet below. This was the home of the halflings for many a year while they were hiding from the monsters that descended upon their lands. Down in the Gash they were safe, well safer, as the creatures couldn't easily get down to them. There was water down there, flat areas to grow crops and caves to hide in. It was only in the time of Robin's grandfather that his people had come up from The Gash to reoccupy Jesselton and begin exploring what was left of The Shire.

Now, the halflings stayed out of the Gash as the positions had reversed. Monsters had found there way down there and that was their domain while the halflings had returned to the surface. He had heard tails of treasures having been left down there from the storytellers of the village, but he figured they were just stories to entertain children.

Bored, Robin often sat atop this roof and tossed pebbles down into the canyon while gazing around the area. Off to his left was the New Bridge that crossed the Gash and connected Jesselton with the lands to the east. Slateholm was in that direction. Slateholm was a city, not a little village like Jesselton. A city where humans, dwarves, elves and even a few halflings lived. A city next to a sea, Robin had never seen a sea. He had seen a lake, but a sea was supposed to be bigger, so big you couldn't see the other side...imagine that much water in one place!

There was adventure out there, but between here and there was a deep dark forest filled with creatures that would sooner eat you than shake your hand. He was going to go, someday, maybe soon if Mazie Thistle came to trade.

Oh, well, what to do today?

He could putter in the garden with Pa, or help Ma with the cooking, or even go down to Old Samuel's house and tinker around with the locks again. Old Samuel had been teaching Robin how to open locks without a key...a neat trick, but he wasn't sure if it would ever be useful to him, certainly not in Jesselton! Nobody in Jesselton ever locked a door.

What to do?

After throwing a last rock Robin decided to head over to work with Old Samuel. He can always work in the garden or cook but it seems that learning to pick locks without a key would be a useful skill in a large city full of people and treasures.

Mazie's eyes light up, "Oh! A woman after my own heart, then. You know that's my stock in trade, 'balms and such.'

Grinning, Mazie gives Tinu a handful of the brown flaky leaves, "Yaupon does have some medicinal properties as an antiseptic when applied to wounds, but mostly it is used as a smoke and drink to provide energy while not having the problems of tobacco or coffee respectively."

OOC: Tinu, Morvith, Ferd all should have received a Luck Token earlier...I forgot to mention it. Please add them to your sheets or at least awareness. A Luck Token can be used to reroll a die on a one for one basis. Basically, it gives you Advantage, negates Disadvantage or gives you double Advantage on a roll. If you might want to use it either include it in your post's rolls or let me know to include it for you if you're depending upon my rolling for you.

Re: The Delivery 6/20 [Tinu, Morvith, Ferd, and Robin]

The little party with Mazie finally turns a corner on the path and leaves the forest. Ahead of them is a grassy plain of tall grass that is split by a wide gash in the ground. A wooden bridge suspended over the narrowest place in this gash connects the path they are on with a what looks like a small village on the other side nestled within rolling hills of grass and trees...and as you look closer fields of crops. It is a little higher on the other side of the canyon than this side.

"Jesselton!" calls Mazie to the others, "It looks like we made it safely, and in good time, too." She points to the bridge with a pair of halflings standing beside it on the other side holding spears, "We'll be safe once we cross the bridge."

It is only a few dozens of yards from the forest edge to the bridge along the path. Tinu, walking ahead of the cart, keeps a wary eye out, but doesn't see anything dangerous as she nears the bridge. Morvith and Ferd are next to Mazie's cart, on either side. Morvith hears something rustling in the grass on the side he is on and what sounds like whispered speech. The hair on Ferd's arms raise, he doesn't know why, but something is off.

Robin, walking to Old Samuel's hole, catches sight of the little caravan coming toward the bridge across the Gash and stops. He recognizes Mazie sitting on her cart, but not the three people with her. Suddenly, he spies movement in the tall grass near the path ahead of Mazie's cart. He sees a scaly brown head pop up and then back down...then a second and the tip of a spear....that's Kobolds!

OOC: Robin gets an action before anything else happens!

Everyone, go ahead and....Roll For Initiative!
