The aged sea captain is a bit slower to follow, but he does, ignoring the waves of the harbor lapping over his shoes. As Yarl runs along the docks, hurrying to get to where the boats are landing, Telurion paddles his boat, with Talian and Tommy, up to the rock, a door opens near the top of the stairs and three figures emerge.
They are dressed in colors of blue and green, their armor is silvery blue scales; all three are females. They descend the stairs quickly to meet the those who have arrived at their stoop. As the fountain continues to spray, the three women brandish their weapons, and one, a dusky skinned Calishite, says, "Why have you come to the Water Queen's House? Have you brought an offering? Speak quickly! Or else begone!"

Edeldhur wrote: Fri Aug 02, 2024 11:20 pm Telurion - "We mean no disrespect to the Water Queen's House," Telurion begins, his voice carrying the weight of urgency. "But our friend has been taken by sahuagin warriors, dragged into these waters not far from here. We seek only to rescue him before it’s too late."
He takes a deep breath, steadying himself despite the chaotic situation. "We bring no offering, only a plea for aid or, at the very least, permission to pursue those who have taken him. The life of an innocent hangs in the balance."
The Calishite woman hesitates, unused to being addressed so by...a commoner. And this gives Hazm an opportunity to say, "Do you stand with the sahuagin or with us?"
If Telurion's plea distracted her, the Halfling's question does even more so. And this...allows Ambergris to say, "No time for charisma and charm my sun-kissed beauty. The fish-folk are banging yer back doors in, wanting to get intimate and ravenous as piranhas-on-legs with yer Holiness's holy of holies."
The three women gasp at the aged sea captain's bold and bawdy words, and so he asks, "Can any of you swim?"

Finally, the Calishite woman finds her voice. "We...stand with our own!" she quips, giving Hazm a glare. "And you sir, watch your tone when addressing the Bitch Queen's servants! Her temple has not been disgraced, nor has she been violated as you suggest. We swim just fine, and you? From the looks of your arm, you've been swimming where you don't belong. Perhaps you should stay on deck instead of venturing into the depths unknown."

As if on cue, Tommy dives into the murky water of the harbor, seeking out his friend, Lesh. Muffled concussions of power can be heard below the surface, and the three servants of the Water Queen flinch and look to the Calishite for direction.
With a glare that would dull a blade, the Calishite woman says, "Why...have...you come here?" She jerks her head backward and one of the women with her, takes off at a run and disappears within the temple of stone.

And it is at this time that the kingpin of the Rats staggers up to the scene. Out of breath and with a stitch in his side, Yarl Blacktongue manages to say, "Underwater...took our man...we want him back now!"
"Then go get him! Or do rats not like the water?" the Calishite hisses.

Under the temple of Umberlee, the Bitch Queen, Lesh and Tommy unleash hell upon the sea devils and those who appear to be in league with them.
Tommy lets loose a barrage of eldritch blasts, knocking the sahuagin which has a net over Trueshot out of the harness of the creature it is riding! While the spectral octopus tries in vain to attack, Lesh sends a bolt of power, guided by Kelemvor himself, that blasts a hole clean through the priest of the Crushing Wave, filling the water with blood! The other two servants, swim toward Lesh and Tommy, approaching quickly with spears and saw-toothed swords ready to attack!

"We have to try something" - Telurion seems also lost at what to do next, but his tone to Talian is resolute. With a look around, he starts going down the stairs and into the water.

I am not very familiar with 5e rules about swimming and drowning, but Telurion can at least hold his breath for a while, right?
I am a bit lost at what to do, and I think I may not be understanding the situation very well. Are the Sahuagin attacking this place? Also, any info on my question above regarding swimming would help me make a decision. I am assuming like in most edition, melee fighting underwater is useless?

Hazm

With no way for several of us to breath water we are effectively out of the fight unless I am missing something, which is very possible.

Fixed name, getting myself confused. LOL

Yarl mutters fer fucks sake takes two deep breaths before holding a third, drawing his dagger and diving into the water.

This interaction is hysterical. Yarl comically far behind getting the response he did is great. I laughed out loud.

Apologies > I overlooked your comment.
The stone temple sits at the end of a long pier with a crumbling stairwell along one side that literally extends into the water and continues deep into the harbor. The sahuagin are in the depths below, along with some others where there is a platform of some kind. Currently, Tommy and Lesh (and now Yarl) are in the water (actually under the surface) and are attacking the creatures/people down there.
The rest of you are either in boats or standing on the edge of the pier confronted by the servants of the temple.

As for swimming and holding your breath:
A creature can hold its breath for a number of minutes equal to 1 + its Constitution modifier (minimum of 30 seconds).
When a creature runs out of breath or is choking, it can survive for a number of rounds equal to its Constitution modifier (minimum of 1 round). At the start of its next turn, it drops to 0 hit points and is dying, and it can't regain hit points or be stabilized until it can breathe again.

(PHB, page 183)

Underwater Combat

When adventurers pursue sahuagin back to their undersea homes, fight off sharks in an ancient shipwreck, or find themselves in a flooded dungeon room, they must fight in a challenging environment. Underwater the following rules apply.
When making a melee weapon attack, a creature that doesn't have a swimming speed (either natural or granted by magic) has disadvantage on the attack roll unless the weapon is a dagger, javelin, shortsword, spear, or trident.
A ranged weapon attack automatically misses a target beyond the weapon's normal range. Even against a target within normal range, the attack roll has disadvantage unless the weapon is a crossbow, a net, or a weapon that is thrown like a javelin (including a spear, trident, or dart).
Creatures and objects that are fully immersed in water have resistance to fire damage.

The sahuagin are ascending the stairs to the surface, or gaining ingress through some underwater passage?

Ambergris

"Verily said, yet my comrade's comrade is about to be filleted into cod-pieces to bait the Gods of the Deep and I fear unless we act soon, many of us will be wriggling like fat maggots on Sahuagin hooks, just like this one "

Not sure what direct threat he can address or what specific help action he can provide.

Possibly, but since you are on the surface, you are uncertain as to what is occurring in the murky depths of Grey Harbor ;)

Tommy

trying to cover his movement Tommy creates an illusion of a falling crate box and tries to grab trueshot to bring him to the surface

OOC(minor illusion does not need any verbal components)
Minor Illusion
Minor Illusion

Illusion Cantrip
Cast At Will

Casting Time: 1 action
Range/Area: 30ft./5ft.
Components: S, M(a bit of fleece)
Duration: 1 minute
Source: PHB, pg. 260

You create a sound or an image of an object within range that lasts for the duration. The illusion also ends if you dismiss it as an action or cast this spell again.

If you create a sound, its volume can range from a whisper to a scream. It can be your voice, someone else's voice, a lion's roar, a beating of drums, or any other sound you choose. The sound continues unabated throughout the duration, or you can make discrete sounds at different times before the spell ends.

If you create an image of an object--such as a chair, muddy footprints, or a small chest--it must be no larger than a 5-foot cube. The image can't create sound, light, smell, or any other sensory effect. Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it.

If a creature uses its action to examine the sound or image, the creature can determine that it is an illusion with a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC. If a creature discerns the illusion for what it is, the illusion becomes faint to the creature.

Yarl mutters fer fucks sake takes two deep breaths before holding a third, drawing his dagger and diving into the water.

As Yarl dives into the water, Ambergris responds about the temple itself.
"Verily said, yet my comrade's comrade is about to be filleted into cod-pieces to bait the Gods of the Deep and I fear unless we act soon, many of us will be wriggling like fat maggots on Sahuagin hooks, just like this one "

And not 10 yards away, the body of a sahuagin floats to the top of murky harbor! As one might imagine, this causes the servants of Umberlee no little alarm! The stoic Calishite opens her mouth a couple of times to comment, but nothing comes out except some type of strangled cough.

"WHAT...HAVE YOU DONE?!?"
The power in the question causes those in its hearing to flinch; the servants of Umberlee turn pale and actually duck their heads.
Standing atop a small balcony, overlooking the fountain and the harbor itself, is a woman dressed in a shimmering dress of...scales? Her skin is dusky and she exudes power; in fact, there is electricity crackling between the fingertips of her left hand.

Below the Grey Harbor...
Yarl dives deep and through the murky water, he sees Tommy and Lesh...and he sees the underwater platform in the distance where a dead sahuagin and another figure floats in death. He also sees two figures swimming toward them with spears in hand. Suddenly, Lesh hurls a guiding bolt of energy right at one of the swimmers, blowing a hole through them and filling the water with blood!
Tommy is swimming toward the platform where a figure lies with a net over him...Trueshot!
Yarl wonders whether he can reach his friend in time, before he runs out of air.

Tommy is about to create a minor illusion, when the other swimming figure comes within range and attacks him!
Spear: [1d20+1]=8+1=9 [1d6+3]=5+3=8
Tommy is able to avoid the spear thrust, but knows if he doesn't hurry, he's going to run out of air...and Trueshot is going to drown!

Tommy reaches out to Lesh telepathically,
"Let's just get Trueshot and get out of here. If they follow us out of the water, they're done for."
With that, he propels himself forward with all his might, using his "Feline Agility" to double his speed, determined to pull Trueshot to safety as quickly as possible.

I have four characters in the water and two still standing in a boat (Ambergris and Telurion) - actions?

Seeing the attack on Tommy, Lesh fires a guiding bolt that slams into his attacker, knocking her backward.
Before she can recover, Tommy "dashes" past her, swimming as fast as Lesh has ever seen.
Yarl is going for Trueshot, because it is the only thing that matters to him right now.
Hazm is in the water too, diving and swimming toward the platform as well.

Once all four companions reach the platform, they can see two things:
1/ Stone steps are carved into the platform the pier rests upon; they lead about 30' to the surface.
2/ Trueshot is not breathing.
