Hello, folks!

#1 Post by Merctime »

Hi everyone. Name's Tim, nice to meet everyone. I post a little, and lurk more, over at Knights n' Knaves Alehouse and the OD&D proboards. Having heard Rredmond talk about this place, I decided to bite the bullet and check it out. Might be fun!

I'm mainly interested in AD&D/OSRIC, Moldvay/Cook B/X or LL, and ASS&SH. I'd love to try some OD&D, but don't have any of the books yet. I haven't actually been in a gaming group in a long time, but I think I could manage playing in an online game or two. I used to DM alot, but, I think I would hold off trying to do that until I get some playing experience again. Not sure I could actually DM and actually make it fun without 'getting my chops back', as it were.

I'm not a power-gamer, or a rules lawyer, and prefer to play with others of like mind. I've never really tried an online game before, but think it might be cool. I don't have a webcam or a mic, and probably would only do PbP because I'm on a laptop.

Anyways, nice to meet everone :)

Happy gaming! -Tim

Edit: Just being curious, but when do we get to post without having to be approved by moderators? Nothing rude meant in this :)

Welcome to the Unseen Servant Tim! Trust me, you've found an excellent gaming group on this site.

Having read some more on this site about the lack of dungeon masters, let me go ahead and make this statement: I'd probably be willing to run a game or two, in the hopes of filling some of the gap between DM's and players.

Some of the stuff that Vargr wrote about 'expectancy' of gamers to come into a site and 'hey, I am entitled to game right nao!' made me really think. Silly as it is to me, I never even thought that when coming here, I had that same idea in mind! (I.e., I thought by coming here, I could slide right into a game, just because I made a username). Not that I think that people do this on purpose, or that I think Vargr thinks that people do this on purpose or anything, it's just that it makes sense that folks like me might pop in and take for granted that there is a skilled dungeon master for every player. I'm not trying to be accusatory in any direction here... Just trying to think about this objectively. Those posts made sense, and I think now I should be thinking of what games I can run as opposed to what games I can play in. 8-)

But the games I run probably wouldn't be more than a few one-shots that didn't grow into 'campaign status' due to my inactivity with DMing for so long. This is a skill, people... A skill! Because of not having done any DMing in so long, the games I run would have to be something that is probably familiar with folks around here already, like a module, and would probably only amount to relatively short games until I can get a feel for DMing again. This is especially true because I've never run, or played in, any type of play-by-post, ever. :o I've read a bit about doing that, as well, and some of the advice offered by guys like Alethan and Rredmond are very helpful. Thanks to them, and everyone who's name I've missed, for that advice!

The games I could DM in would most likely be:

A) B/X (Labrynth Lord) Nice and simple! Still fun as hell! :)

B) AD&D/Osric ('1st edition AD&D') The fricken game that rocks! Love this! Could be hard to manage after my gaming drought.

C) Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerors of Hyperborea. This would be later on, as I still need to work out a low-level 'introductory' adventure for it. But I love this game dearly... And I've never DMed it in my life. But god, I want too!

Lastly, I'd need players that understand that I haven't done this for a while. Mistakes will be made. Some things may seem silly or under-gamed. They would need to know right up front that I need to get back in the driver's seat, and that that takes time!

I think I'm going to pop on over to the DM advice section over here again, and see what I can work out. :)

By all means, feel free to start DMing a game as soon as you are comfortable doing so.

But do not in any way feel you are obliged to DM a game, simply because you are a member of this forum. There is no such requirement, nor will there ever be.

While there are some basic rules of etiquette everyone is expected to follow on this forum (which can mostly be summed up with, "Don't Be A Dick"), running a game is not one of them.

I Appreciate your words, Al. I suppose I don't want to come off as 'feeling obligated' more than I do want to come off as 'wanting to contribute' :D

I'm pretty sure I can follow this rule 8-) I'm pretty easy to get along with, and I prefer to not 'hide behind the internetz' as an excuse to be a jerk to people (because no-one is close enough to punch me in the face for it). I'd rather just play games and have a good time with others of a similar mind. I'll prove this in the long run, I think.

I'm working on getting familiar with some of the features of this board and the Dice Roller. I've made a test character, and have started a 'campaign', but it will take a bit more time to get set up, I think. Cheers, guys n' gals, and happy gaming! -Tim

I wanted to clarify because the intention of that statement you referred to WAS to require people to host a game enforce they were allowed to play. I assure you that will never be the case.
