Gam’A Zone, Motter’s Realm 261D/81 (Late Afternoon)
Max scrutinizes the black ceiling column with Podo. It rattles slightly in the groove as if its loose from a connection. Some of its short round stumps have a microscopic seam where they meet the main body of the stalactite.
The sun still partially illuminates the primary circular chamber from the open doors at the ends of the alcove portals.

Urlando joins the others examining the black stalactite.
Urlando theorizes that there must be some relationship between the low columns, the moving stalactite and the room with the silvery liquid floor. "Maybe we have to put something on these platforms here to activate the magic. Or--or--we have to put something in the pool of quicksilver over there." he utters. His whiskers twitch. "That bumpy thing there must be how you use it," he utters, pointing at the stalactite.
The rat-man thinks about poking and prodding at the stalactite, but them he remembers the disaster that befell the group the last time he tried to operate the advanced technology in a fortress like this, so he keeps his paws to himself and just observes.

Always willing to help a friend, Podo takes one of his spikes and sets it in the center of the center pedestal. He then walks over to this floor of liquid silver Urlando has informed him about and drops a spike into the center of the pool. He looks back curiously, giving a thumbs up, to see if anything happens. (He will also listen to see if the spike makes any sound if/when it hits the bottom of the pool.)

Podo acts on the rat-man’s hunch and sets a steel spike on the center platform, before walking down the corridor to the silver pool. The fungal giant drops another spike into the liquid floor, where it sinks and produces a dim >PLUNK< five seconds later.
No apparent reaction to the actions (beyond the PLUNK) is observed.

Urlando can't hold back his curiosity, and will begin to manipulate the bumps and grooves on the stalactite, assuming they are buttons, levers or some type of control. Unless one of his companions intervenes to stop him (or counsels him against taking unwise action), he will prod, tap and push at them for a minute or so to see if he can make something happen.
The fortress is probably dead anyway, he reasons to himself. What's the worst that could happen?

The rat-man’s probing of the object results in a distressing >CLINK< as the ceiling column cracks along a circumferential groove and a lower chunk falls onto the central platform. Dozens of translucent waxy pellets, the size of a potato, dribble out of the gizmo and roll all over the floor.

Urlando is cut from a shard of glass (DMG 2) when the object breaks.

Max watches the artifact shatter, eyes agog. He pats the rat-man on the back, saying, Least it didn't blow up on ya! Then he looks at the blood and thinks about how it broke and amends his condolence: I mean like a big "boom" explosion.

Podo begins moving toward the next hallway to the northeast with the larger circular room, looking up cautiously to see if any flying pests are around and will stop at the entrance to the hall to wait for anyone else coming along.

Urlando mutters in frustration after breaking the stalactite and hangs his heads in shame. After pausing to tend his cut from the broken glass, he bends down to inspect the potato-sized pellets that fell out. Probably not a food cache, he thinks to himself. If there is nothing obviously dangerous about the pellets (e.g., they're glowing, they're moving, they smell awful, etc.), he'll pocket a few to inspect further. He then hurries after the group to search for more secret access panels.

After determining whether the pellets are safe to touch, Urlando collects a few of the hard, waxy objects and pockets them. He then joins the group to explore more of the structure.
Moving east, you stop at the entrance to a hallway being a copy of the one you just left. Two flies, that were feasting on cylinder slime, are startled by you approach and move deeper into the corridor.
You cautiously enter the passage and verify the side corridor leads to a cylindrical shaft leading up into darkness.
