Xambaala

#1 Post by OGRE MAGE »

Considered a large settlement by contemporary Hyperborean standards, Xambaala has a permanent population of around 2,000 persons, with the enslaved native people (of mostly Esquimaux-Ixian descent) making up over half that number. Depending on the season, the town might swell with another 1,000 foreigners and transients passing through on business, pleasure, adventure, etc.

The free peoples of Xambaala are comprised of a varied mix of lineages, with Ixian and Moorish descendants of Yithorium dominating the ruling class. Travelers who pack the docks and dusty streets can range from Esquimaux, Keltic, Viking, along with many others.

Once a prominent and vibrant city before the Green Death, filled with scholars, sorcerers, and seafaring visitors from all walks of life, the city has since fallen into decadence and decay. Only the inner quadrants of the town are occupied by the ruling class, while the slave caste inhabits what they can of the Old City, which is slowly being devoured by the endless encroachment of the indomitable desert sands. The rich and fertile coastal grasslands that once allowed Xambaala to thrive have already fallen victim to this inevitable fate, the modern landscape now changed forever into a dry, vast nothingness.

Most buildings in Xambaala are drab and dust colored mud brick construction with plastered exteriors. Older structures reflect a wealthy antiquity, made of marble and stone with decorative colored tiling. While the outer Old City is now a dangerous dusty shell, choked with smoke and slaves, the inner city remains a vibrant, bustling town, where scholars, soldiers, merchants, mendicants, and priests rush about conducting their self-important tasks.

Though some streets may be filled with lotus dens, harem houses, and wine sinks, crime in Xambaala is simply not tolerated. The ruling Satrap, appointed by the Witch Queen of Yithorium herself, keeps close tabs on illegal activity, and any convicted criminals are dealt with harshly.

I will add numbered locals (that don’t get dedicated threads) to this post as they are discovered.

The Continuous Lighthouse (11)

A tall, slim, unadorned tower with a dull white light permanently shining atop its conical roof. A lone Xambaali guard stands outside the ground floor of its only entrance.

Kang leads Xenos and Tuurma back into the city proper, where they look around at the wares of the few remaining merchants along the dwindling bazaar route.

You can find what I already mentioned, and you are offered 1gp each for the javelins.

I don't know how much of this we need to roleplay out, so tell me what you want to do and I will lead you in the right direction.

I'm thinking it might work better for us to keep the javalin's rather than sell them as we could only get one long spear from that, maybe another if we spent some of the our money. So, maybe we just get the goat and the net, and split the cost up. Assuming we get something for the croc corpse we can reimburse anything spent now before divvying up what's left

EDIT: I'm thinking that if the locals can't pierce the croc with their weapons then I don't think sharpened poles will be much use.

Tuurma offers to pay the net for 2 gp if Kang agrees, leaving Kang to pay for the goat.

Kang will offer resistance before acquiescing to Tuurma’s offer.

Okay, so I think that's it? The net and the goat.

After the trip back into the city, returning to the Docks area to purchase a large rope cargo net, the trio heads to the Bazaar to look for livestock. Most of the stalls and stores are shut down by this time, but you are able to catch a local herder before he leaves to buy his sickest looking goat. (please make sure 6gp in coin is being deducted from your sheets for these items)

As bloated Helios slowly drops below the horizon, the normally active desert city begins to wind down for the day. Markets close and stores lock up their wares for the night, with most people heading indoors before the Eventide bell rings out the evenings curfew call.

Xenos leads the trio to a relatively safe place where he has slept out a few nights in his recent past, bragging about how cheap it will be, but not mentioning they will be sleeping on a rush covered dirt floor. Fortunately, they still have enough coin between them for a few drinks and a hot meal.

Lets pick that action up here: https://www.unseenservant.us/forum/view ... 87#p626487

I will post this here, so everyone can see it.
Karaunios wrote: Thu Oct 27, 2022 4:01 pm Sorry, I might have overlooked that part in the lore... is it a big deal being a Hyperborean? Is it something most people have heard of?
You don't see many true Hyperborean people around. They, like Atlanteans, are unable to reproduce outside their race, and despite the formers longer lifespan, both races are considered to be endangered.

I am not saying you never see them, but they are generally unpleasant at best towards other races, and are unruly to deal with whenever necessary. Those you may see in the streets are normally covered in long hooded robes, act standoffish, and are mostly unwilling to deal with any but their own kind.

Obviously we know that Tuurma isn't Hyperborean, but her pale (ashen) skin color and her silver/blue hair is obviously confusing to a few of the townies who think she may be.

Most known Hyperboreans in the game will be unpleasant to deal with.
