When the day's battle began, Taira no Koremori had held back a unit of samurai infantry. Now he launched it at the Minamoto army's weakest spot in its strung-out, snaking line.

Minamoto [1d6]=1 Taira [1d6+1]=1+1=2
Minamoto lose 1 TP.

Yoritomo senjo-jutsu BCS [1d20]=10
Fails, no half damage.

Taira, 5.6 TP. Minamoto, 2.756 TP. Just barely a 2:1 ratio, Taira get an additional +1 to the 1d6 roll next turn, for a total of +2.

Please roll on the Losing column, +2 for Courageous.

BENC:
The character has an encounter as above, but the
Gamesmaster adds 1 to the Level of the foe as determined
on the Foes in Battle Table. Additionally, the Gamesmaster
may allow a 25% chance that the “foe” encountered is
actually more than one enemy. In this case, the number
indicated on the Foes in Battle Table is the total of the foes’
Levels.

ENC:
The character has an encounter with a specific foe. The
combat is fought under the normal combat rules. The foe is
a classic Bushi whose Level is determined on the Foes in
Battle Table. If the character wins, he gains normal Budo
experience points and adds the foe’s Level to his
accumulated total of heads. Any weapons and armor
belonging to the foe become the character’s property after
the battle.

Here, the harsh, "realism" Bushido rules are a little kinder and take the PC's level into account. That is, 6th Levels encounter stronger opponents than 1st Levels. Roll on the encounters in battles table. [1d6]=1 R for Rabble, +1 for BENC, so a Classic Bushi. I may move attribute points around a little for a little unpredictability. (The total won't be more or less than a Classic Bushi's. Will be a Level 1 Bushi, I think. I have to consult the rules). The maximum number of opponents in this case can't be more that 1, so we can ignore the BENC 25% rule. To be continued after Kentaro's roll.

What I said above is wrong. I think we just add 1 to the result on the table. So 2 instead of 1, still a Rabble foe for Hiroshi.

I don't understand Kentaro's roll. Did he roll an ENC, then a 1 on the Foes in Battle table?

Yes, he rolled an ENC, then you said "To be continued after Kentaro's roll." So, I thought you wanted me to roll on the Foes table.

Sorry, I missed the first post for Kentaro. OK, so a Rabble encounter. I used the information for Rabble bushi (ashigaru) from the War Party encounter in book 2.

Hiroshi
APs tied (10, 5)

Hiroshi moved quickly, often felling opponents with just one or two strokes of his katana. The more veteran ashigaru now before him has seen that and is more prepared. He feints a naginata swing at Hiroshi's side, but veers it toward his shin. The blade strikes, but the ronin's armor deflects it.
[1d20]=6 [2d6]=10
The range is Long.

Kentaro
NPC goes first on APs, unless Kentaro is on horseback and Tafu is fighting as a warhorse. Then it's Tafu, ashigaru, Kentaro, ashigaru, Kentaro.

Kentaro had been racing through the battle, defeating and beheading all that came before him. But now he's confronted by a wild-eyed ashigaru who's in a battle rage. The man screams a hysterical scream and aims his yari at the big ronin's heart. The strike misses badly.
[1d20]=20 [1d10]=3
Critical Failure [1d20]=5 No special effect. A normal miss occurs.
The range is Long.

Tafu the Warhorse (BCS 12) [1d20]=12 [1d6+1]=2+1=3
BCS 19 (+2 Superior blade) (+1 Mounted) = 22; Critical success 1-2.
Superior Katana [1d20]=20[1d6+8]=6+8=14
Critical Failure [1d20]=13
Attacker falls down and suffers a Daze Special Effect
(Target forfeits next Available Action Phase)
The warhorse rears as the ashigaru closes, lashing out with his hooves. The wild-eyed ashigaru screams a hysterical scream and aims his yari at the big ronin's heart. The strike misses badly.

Kentaro steps the warhorse in on the Ashigaru (medium range), then brings around his blade in a powerful two-handed swing, but the jostling of the horse makes him miss badly and throws him off balance.
(Lost second action.)

Kentaro
The warhorse's hard hooves strike the ashigaru's breastplate, but the steel protects him from injury. The man grimaces and takes a wild, quick jab at the ronin, his spearhead at an awkward too-close range.
Secondary action, medium range.[1d20]=12 [1d10]=1

Turn 2

He then steps back a yard and swings the bladed spearhead at Kentaro's throat. The strike is true, but it rebounds off of the ronin's heavy armor.

Hiroshi
Edit: This NPC action didn't occur. It skipped Hiroshi's secondary action from the previous turn. Please completely disregard.

Did I miss a secondary action for Hiroshi for turn 1?

Also isn’t a 2 a crit not a fumble?

Re: 2nd Scroll - Bamboo and Butterfly

...isn't that a critical success on Hiroshi instead of a critical failure?

Kentaro
Turn 2:
Tafu the Warhorse (BCS 12) [1d20]=1 [1d6+1]=1+1=2
Tafu the Warhorse (Crit!) [1d10]=8[1d20]=11
Target knocked back 1 yard and Stunned
(Target forfeits any Available Action Phases
remaining in that Detailed Turn and all on the next Detailed
Turn. The target is considered Passive during this time and
loses any benefits for Defense)
BCS 19 (+2 Superior blade) (+1 Mounted) (+5 target passive)(+5 side facing) = 32; Critical success 1-3.

Basic action: Close to Engage. Horse BMA is 6, half is 3... is that enough to shift to a Side facing?

Superior Katana (BCS 32)[1d20]=11[1d6+8]=6+8=14
Secondary action: Attack.
BCS 19 (+2 Superior blade) (+1 Mounted) (+5 target passive)(+5 side facing) = 32; Divide in half = 16, critical success 1-2.

Superior Katana (BCS 16) [1d20]=19[1d6+8]=3+8=11
Miss.

Turn 3:
Tafu (BCS 12 +5 Passive +5 Side facing) = BCS 22, crit 1-2.

Tafu the Warhorse (BCS 22) [1d20]=10[1d6+1]=1+1=2
Superior Katana (BCS 32) [1d20]=16[1d6+8]=3+8=11
Superior Katana (BCS 16) [1d20]=17[1d6+8]=1+8=9

Tafu rears again, nostrils flaring, and kicks the Ashigaru squarely in the head (-2), leaving him stunned. Kentaro pivots to the flank of the helpless man, slicing down hard with his katana (-14). Tafu kicks the man again (-2) and Kentaro's deadly blade again strikes home (-11)

Turn 4:
Tafu the Warhorse (BCS 22) [1d20]=12 [1d6+1]=5+1=6

If the man is still standing, he takes a powerful hoof to the breastplate. (-6)

Total of 35 damage before the Ashigaru acts again.

Derp, I've been playing too much AD&D. The 1 is a critical success.
[1d20]=3 Double damage, 16 HP. I'll revise the post a little later.
Sorry, we need Hiroshi's secondary, and primary and secondary for next turn. NPC takes no actions.

OK, unless Hiroshi had a chance to heal from the previous day's battle damage, 16 takes him out.

Sorry about the goof, please disregard the ashigaru NPC's crit success roll against Hiroshi. It didn't happen (as yet :)) because it would have happened in the future. That would force the player with knowledge of the future to either take a desperate action, or take advantage of knowledge of what's going to happen in the future. No good. Hiroshi's secondary action needed, then we go to the next turn and the NPC rolls his primary. (BTW. Hiroshi would be incapacitated if his HP loss exceed his HP. He'd be at 0 with the crit, so still fighting. If damage exceed HP + level, then dead).

Summary: - Hiroshi has a secondary action, HP still at full 16. His naginata ashigaru foe missed on primary phase. Need Hiroshi's secondary action for this turn. Then the NPC will go first with primary next turn.

- Kentaro and horse. Everyone missed in Turn 1. Kentaro's horse crit stunned the yari ashigaru at the top of Turn 2. Kentaro used Close and Engage to maneuver his horse to the ashigaru's Side facing. I'm going to say he'd need a successful bajutsu BCS to do that in the middle of melee and Engaged. But even without the Side +5 bonus to BCS, Tafu and Kentaro both more than hit and take out the foe. ENC successfully ended. Head, armor, and weapons belong to Kentaro. He'll have to remember to claim them if he wants them, though. :)

Hiroshi's secondary action from the first hour of the second day of the battle are up. 1st level bushi vs. a Rabble, but cautious, ashigaru and his naginata.
