All IFVs have a rapid pulse plasma "A" gun Pen 44 (+2 Autofire) - unless you went for the "single shot" Pen 54 version. Jess' ride has the point defence system with the VRF gauss slaved to that. It can carry just four troops.

The other "vanilla" IFVs retain the plasma gun but have the capacity to carry ten troops (instead of VRF gauss ammo).

The rapid pulse plasma gun is good against lightly armoured vehicles, bunker embrasures and all infantry but not starships (AV = 60).

If you kept plugging away at an AV 60 target with a Pen 54 weapon you'd eventually roll a six and get surface hits but not likely a kill.

However, the Pen 44 weapon is destructive enough that if you could get to "point blank" range and deliberately target certain ship components or vulnerable areas (cockpit windows, drive plates at the rear, sensor antennae, etc) you would surely degrade a ship's ability to effectively function and get a "mission kill". However, star ships are effectively super tanks and your IFVs don't want to be trading shots with starship lasers. One way to avoid this is to get close to the hull (or inside it) where the ship's turret weapons can't be brought to bear.

The weapons that you have that are capable of cracking ship's hulls are: breaching charges (zero range), the AT missile system mounted on one G Carrier and the launch/gunship's missile rack (three "full fat" ship to ship missiles).

I gather that the pirate ships and their berms are not the primary target of the mission?

The real target is infrastructure to the north?

If that is the case, then the less fuss we make taking these targets of opportunity, the better. Keeping the military assets hidden unless they are essential to redeem an AMFU for example. If we go in lightly equipped, the whole thing might pass off as pirate high jinks.

Of course, we still need to plan for a full-scale engagement, but if we go big then it has to be designed to roll over to the primary objective - once the IFVs roll out we won't get a second chance at that.

Well, arguably not since the broad mission is to put the base beyond use. However, there may be other considerations. Destroying or capturing a significant number of the pirate ships and/or crews would surely fulfill the success critera by default.

Of course the ships themselves have significant cash value even in used/slightly shabby condition.

As Willie Garvin might say to Modesty Blaise "Princess, we're goin' to 'ave to do this caper inside out".

You need some kind of "foot in the door" cum Trojan Horse of a plan to get aboard certain pirate ships in order to neutralise them/their reduced crews. From her conversation with the pirates Jess knows that whatever (hopefully modest) noise that makes seems unlikely to bother the local garrison.

You can surely rely on a certain amount of immediate tactical surprise with the pure military option but as I think you are realising you haven't yet got the Intel to fully maximise that edge.

In general terms you will all have the sense that the star port/pirate base, if not quite on a peacetime footing, certainly considers itself a "safe rear area".

Furthermore time may yet be on your side - presuming your allies aren't just here for the beer... ;)

All right, so let's take out as many of the pirate crews as we can on the way back to the ship, and then we can figure out how to infiltrate the berms to disable as many ships as possible.

Pending Freya's recon roll you're due some real time Intel from your drones (that you are now in communication with).

From what you have ascertained on the way out of the club (and certainly from what some of you have witnessed inside) various of the pirate crews were very roughly handled. They may now be withdrawing very fast/routing back to their only known safety on planet (having thought they were safe in "their" private club).

It's not worthy of asking for an IC roll but mull over the night's events from the pirate point of view - multiple crews were (rather brutally) attacked. They might not all be best mates but then who else have they got and "There but for the grace of God..." no doubt apply to their thinking.

Those crew that were hit, although pirates, may not necessarily be ship's troops (and certainly not soldiers!) and might perhaps be more likely to react to "surprise close combat not on their terms" like non combat "Techs". There is a reason the Navy has Marines! For example Viper's Nest is an auxiliary carrier - the majority of her crew are perhaps likely to either be just shipboard types, maintenance techs or fighter jocks. "Up close and personal" really isn't their thing...

However, the full military option does (quite properly) need a ponder as you will surely need it at some stage... ;)
