Re: II. The Hole in the Oak
Haelan agrees with Zan "Indeed, while the rushing sound of water seems natural, a green glow is much more unusual, though I know from earlier experience that fungi can produce similar light."

EDITED
“Aye that it can,” the dwarf said, her voice low. Rubbing her chin with blunt, calloused fingers, Ealga continued, “Something ‘ere don’t feel right and I’m of the notion of heading toward wind or water. If we get to the considerable task of clearing away that plug o’ roots, well, it could bring us attention we dinnae want. The other way, could be it circles ‘round back ‘ere.”
Then under her breath, “‘O course I’m just a dwarf, so what would I know….” Damn tall folk, standing around woolgathering and all, she thought.

Re: II. The Hole in the Oak
Haelan nods "That is also a fine point. But on the other hand, would you be comfortable trekking around in these tunnels with a strange glow of unknown origin at your back? Right next to the only exit we're familiar with?"

Re: II. The Hole in the Oak
Glove
While the group debates which direction to pursue, Haelan spots an old leather glove, fit for a left hand, resting on a twisted root. The glove appears as if sized for a smallish human hand, and shows heavy wear and stains from dirt, oils, maybe even some burns?
Tracks
It's difficult to tell whether the hoof tracks were made from a two- or four-legged creature, but those that examine the floor and track them from the point of the junction notice that these hoof prints exclusively tread down the passage to the right, towards the roots, and the glow.
Scouting
To hopefully help discover additional details that could aid in an ultimate decision for their next course of progress, Buzar scouts a safe, short distance down each path.
Right
The half-orc is able to confirm that the warn green glow originates from beyond the root blockage.
And the passage is, in fact, blocked, and shares the same cramped conditions -- maybe 5-feet wide with a 6-foot ceiling.
Passing beyond the section overgrown with the roots will require either cutting through them, or possibly shoving them aside to create a path.
A closer, more direct inspection will be required to know for sure.
Left
The half-orc scout halts any investigation to the left after a very short distance -- maybe 5-10 feet.
The passage dimensions are roughly the same, but the walls become more sandy than earthy in texture, with several exposed roots along the walls and small sprouts of roots dangling from the ceiling.
The floor itself is also sandy... and the detail which gives the scout pause is the fact that any boot prints seem to cease after maybe 10-15 feet; or just beyond his current position.
Despite the relative lack of distance covered, however, it appears as if the branch to the right -- towards the noise -- appears to open up into a larger area after maybe 50-60 feet.
The half-orc returns with his findings.

Zan
“I believe so!” Zan agreed with Rawani, waiting for one of the others to perform the task. He took a brief inventory of his pack so as to emphasize his involvement in more important tasks. After hearing the half-orc’s report, the scribe added, “When and if we later investigate the opposite way, we should be wary where the tracks cease. Perhaps there is some unseen trap or peril.”

Re: II. The Hole in the Oak
Haelan pauses for a moment. "Hold on, what is this?" He takes a closer look while not touching the glove. What size is it? What material? Any markings or symbols? Any sign that the roots took it off someone as part of an attack?dmw71 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 10, 2021 11:57 pm While the group debates which direction to pursue, Haelan spots an old leather glove, fit for a left hand, resting on a twisted root. "I believe this confirms the notion that these tracks were left by intelligent creatures. Let us observe how exactly they interact with the roots before we start hacking."It's difficult to tell whether the hoof tracks were made from a two- or four-legged creature, but those that examine the floor and track them from the point of the junction notice that these hoof prints exclusively tread down the passage to the right, towards the roots, and the glow.
"Yes, well observed. Though if there are footprints coming back in the other direction, that would suggest a secret passage of some kind."
Re: II. The Hole in the Oak
The Glove
Without touching it, Haelan performs a closer inspection on the glove he spotted.
He is unable to discern too much additional detail, however.
- It's made of leather;
- The glove is well used, by the sign of heavy wear and discoloration, especially in the creases;
- It is likely human-sized, but could possibly fit any-handed creature of that rough size.
The only real new observation the cleric is able to make is that the glove seems to be placed upon the root it rests on. Or, if dropped or tossed, it fell and landed in an ideal position.
Blocked with Roots
The passage to the right shares the same cramped conditions -- maybe 5-feet wide with a 6-foot ceiling.
It is, in fact, blocked by roots.
Passing beyond the section overgrown with the roots will require either cutting through them, or possibly shoving them aside to create a path.
Beyond the roots, an inviting, faint green glow continues to radiate. This right-hand passage also feels a bit warmer.
A wider, more rounded area is also visible beyond the wall of root blockage. This wider area also appears to have a taller ceiling.

The Glove
"Do you mind?" Rawani says, bending down to reach for and grab the glove for a closer examination.
It's a glove, for the left hand.
As described.
Touching or holding only confirms its age or condition, as it's initially stiff when lifted.
