Isvand immediately sends 2 arrows at the dwarf, with the second at least going wide. He'll continue to move sideways, trying to keep a clear field of fire on the dwarf while staying clear of his friends.

Sven is surprised the ashy mage took the bait so easily. :? "You cultists are all the same!!!"

He immediately fires off a pair, that's right, a pair of magical energy bolts into the foul grey cultist. Magic Missile [2d4+2]=3+2=5 :x 1st Level Spell Retention (INT 15) [4d6+1]=21+1=22 :x :x :x of course

As the darts unerringly hit their mark, the young mage shouts out to their enemy. "None of you have to die here today because of this grey bastard! Any man who decides not to take up arms against us will be spared!!!" CHR Check (9) [4d6]=12 :x

"Okay Sylvester! You can come out now!"

If the grey mage starts a spell, Smokie will hopefully be there to bite him in his ass.

Anyone know how to reset the dice roller? It either wants us all dead, or else it needs a reboot or something.

Gerdal rubs one of her twined dried flower bracelets on her arm and while breathing in the sweet smell focusing her attention on Garrett if she can get within range (otherwise on one of the laborers).

casts charm person

If the spell has any effect, she addresses the target:

"Help! They're going to sacrafice us to some dark god!"

May 10th 1066

Barrowmoor, south of Helix. Duchy of Aerik.

1.20pm Light rain.
Light: Visibility poor. Lantern (Truro) Lantern (Treyvor).
Effects none.

'Nergal's Door Mound

The wariness and unease among the party is brought to an abrupt head as Sven articulates very well the thoughts of evil Knievel. The ashen faced necromancer, physically scarred by his delving into the deep speeches and black arts of being one of 'The Chosen', gives an order to act before the party strike preemptively themselves.

He points to his men to seize the priest with one hand and motions a circle with his other. Realising the ambush upon them, the party each prepared so not caught unawares act with simultaneous motion. Sven triggers his own amplified magics that would strike twin impaling darts of arcane energy into the chest of his nemesis. Instead the trio of shafts, the third a barbed javelin hurled by Orgoth each strike an unseen shield and ricochet away.

The one eyed assassin needs two good ones for his aim goes awry, the dwarven crossbowman firing wide of his target. The gnomes, ready their weapons but are beset by two mallet wielding thugs who bash the little men. Truro gets overpowered by a trio of men who grapple him and try to haul him to the butcher's slab. One of the men, perhaps touched by the words of faith from the preaching evangelist seems to have a more repentant heart. He doesn't react to the order to sacrifice the priest and instead focuses on the 'vision appearing from the mist'. A woman speaking soothing words and calling him to his senses in the madness surrounding him. Drew gets charmed by Gerdal and picks up a mallet to shield her from any who would attack.

Isvand hits the dwarf in his shoulder with an arrow. Amos is unopposed, he brings his staff to bear without effect.

Sven brings his wolf. Smokie, seemingly hidden in the veil of mist suddenly leaps into the fray, landing on the altar. Bristling white winter fur and baring fangs, he howls viciously. It is too much for the labourers. The five hired hands become 'fired feet' as they immediately run away overcome with fear.

In an instant the battle has changed. The necromancer suddenly surrounded and abandoned, draws a dagger to defend himself, taunting the party to "come, spill my blood and gain entry into the cursed abodes yourselves."

Garrett left moments before to investigate any writing on the tombstones. The dwarf is still above the stone door loading his crossbow. Only five of the six labourers ran away. The one charmed by you is still there.

Can we assume that you keep the same initiative order till the end of the battle?

Sven is not surprised to see the locals run, but wishes he could have acted a second sooner when it came to the evil mage. He tries something different that won't be stopped by such simple magics, fumbling with a cube of sugar in his component pouch.

"We cannot give you what you seek evil one. For that is up to the gods to decide, false or otherwise."

The frightened young mage intertwines magic phrases into his words. casting Charm Person

"We didn't come here to enter this cursed abode as you did, but we cannot tolerate the ritualistic killing of one of our own. Perhaps we could compromise and find another suitable and more willing victim? Together? Tell your men to stand down and we can discuss this as friends."

Sven wills Smokie to run around to try to find the other members of their gang that might be trying to shoot at them through the mist.

Gerdal

"Drew, is that your name? I'm so glad I found you out here, what are the chances? It's so rare with true friends. Drew, look at me. We must find Garrett immediately and tell him about this terrible misunderstanding. He went to the tombstones, let's go look for him. But beware, there could be monsters our here, so keep your cudgel ready will you?"

She lets Drew lead the way.

Nergal's Door (Mound 7)

Orgoth stabs at the mage who deftly dodges away. As does the dwarf on the mound above the stone door. His position peppered by Isvand's arrows and bolts from the gnomes though none find a mark. The one-eyed dwarf slinks off up the mound and into the mist.

Amos goes to lift up the battered Truro. The young cleric grateful his martyrdom has not yet come.

Gerdal shepherds the charmed labourer Drew. "Yes, I can see. A big misunderstanding. Garrett must listen also. The steward is highly influenced by the mage. I will go with you and you can talk to him."

He says and mallet in hand, waves for you to follow him around the mound to the tombstones at the other end.

Knievel defends himself from the melee and backs away towards the stone door and away from the wolf lurking on the altar stone.Sven mind-links with Smokie who slinks off into the mist also. He then sweetens the deal with the mage by halting the combat and charming him.

The necromancer, falls to his knees, banging feebly on the impassive stone doors. But no entry opens to him and you feel the aggression and bloodthirst leave. "A willing victim. Maybe I should be the living sacrifice. The augury vouched I would find only despair until my heart was truly His."

so Sven you now have a new best friend. As does Gerdal.

Gerdal follows Drew and tries to stay alert if Garret is hiding behind some tree.

She silently waves her hand, the invisible shield forming around her once again.

Casts shield.

A little more stressed out now she curses as this time the spell barely - but still - slips from her mind.

Isvand, having lost sight of the Dwarf, shifts to the robed figure that Orgoth is stabbing and adds his effort to bringing him down. As he tries to move for a better shot, he stumbles hard over an unseen root right as he gets ready to let fly. I rolled the second arrow, but totally understand if I've got a broken bow...

From last round:1st Level Spell Retention (INT 15) [4d6+1]=10+1=11 Whew!

Sven almost breaths a sigh of relief. Almost.

Seeing his trusted friend Orgoth, still in his battle rage, about to oblige the evil mage who is almost goading the half-orc to strike him dead upon the altar, Sven knows he must act quickly. Certain the tomb will open once the evil altar tastes blood, and having no desire to see what lies beyond the door, Sven casts a spell upon his own party member for the second time. casting Charm Person on Orgoth

“Hey buddy! Why don’t you hold on for a minute? We need this guy to call off his men so we aren’t constantly getting shot at in the mist out here. He is no threat to us right now.”

I have no idea if this will work or not, and I know Rex is just RPing his character, so no big deal to me either way. I just think Sven would try his best to get the others in check before killing this guy. So….

The mage looks to his new evil grey friend. “Call out for you men to stand down and return to us now. We can discuss our plans and if you still desire to get inside the tomb, we will do so using the proper rituals. Call them back. Do it now.”

Edit: You guys are murder crazy! Hopefully Isvand’s fumble negates the second shot. Maybe I should have used the Sleep spell on you both?

Since your first MM and the javelin failed to draw blood before I assumed Knievel had a shield up. If so, that second arrow should be a miss. Fingers crossed.

Nergal's Door (Mound 7)

interesting ...

Orgoth, having thrown a javelin which only just ricocheted away from the necromancer's torso, the warrior grabs his silvered spear and charges him, determined to run him through. Isvand has no luck with his bow, both arrows bounce off the invoked unseen shield that wards the mage from missiles. About to be run through and skewered like a Knievel kebab, amazingly Orgoth raises his arm to stab down but halts, another reasoning guiding his first thoughts.

Sven seems to have read the arcane bestseller, 'How to make friends and influence people.', his words and gestures helping him to make suggestions to those impressed by his charisma. Orgoth comes under the Charm Person effect.

Gnimish & Treyvor take up some watchman positions, bunkering behind the mound of excavation stone to ward the group. Amos and Truro check out the altar in more detail.

Knievel calls for his men as requested.

Meanwhile ... Gerdal and Drew walk along the foot of the mound to the northwest side about 120'ft away. She finds the two previous guards with Garrett. The steward is checking the headstones by candlelight, making notes of any etchings. You are about to invite the steward and men back to the excavated area when the one-eyed dwarf steps out of the mist, bleeding from the arrow wound, the shaft snapped in half and protruding from his shoulder. Blood streaks down his cloak.

"She is a witch. They have beset us." he says and triggers the crossbow from almost point blank range at Gerdal. The deadly bolt would be fatal but the missile pings off another invoked shield. Her 'meatshield' Drew raises his mallet to protect her but another shadow, cloaked grey in fur and teeth lands upon the dwarf's back to savage him.

A voice, faint upon the mist calls everyone to gather, but for those at the tombstones initiative please.

actions everyone.

The labourers scattered by the appearance of the wolf ran away into the mist.
