Zoster's enchanted staff smashes into the skeleton's leg. Bones splinter and the monster's right leg is severed at the knee. It collapses to the ground. The skeleton tries to rise, but with a mighty battle cry Xale smashes it's skull with his war hammer. The huge scimitars clatter to the ground as the creature collapses into a loose pile of broken bones.

Anyone want to open another?

Zoster sighs as the undead collapses into a pile of bones Was there anything inside the chest other than this aberration?

He tries to identify from where he stands if there is anything lying on the floor together with the remains of the skeleton and the chest.

Nothing to do with greed my friend, we are here on a mission. Are we sure we have uncovered all that is relevant in this room? asks the druid

When last we left our heroes...

...they had just defeated the giant skeleton that had attacked when the party opened the wooden chest. Fosco, the target of the monster's worst attacks, had fallen in the battle. But Zoster's quick ministrations brought the thief back to consciousness—beaten, bruised, and tired, but alive.

The skeleton's bones once again lifeless and inanimate, the party considers its next move. Two chests remain unopened. Mason counsels against further exploration of the chests. "Will greed be the death of someone?" he asks. Zoster the druid reminds him of the party's mission. "Nothing to do with greed my friend," he replies, "we are here on a mission. Are we sure we have uncovered all that is relevant in this room?"

What will the party do next?

Notes:
  • Please check your character on the status list at the bottom of this post to make sure I have your HP right.
  • MrHemlocks won't be playing Fosco from here on out and the character sheet was accidentally deleted a while back. I've offered the character to a player on the waiting list. If I get a taker, the new player will need to re-roll Fosco and will start at -23 HP. If someone doesn't take over the character, I'll retcon that the thief's wounds were actually fatal and that Zoster noticed this before casting his healing spell. Fosco will walk around in zombie mode for now.
  • Xale's Find Traps spell has expired.
  • Please bear with me as I try to figure out what style I prefer for my DM posts. Thanks!

OOC: If Fosco is at -23hp; shouldn't he be off to another plane of existence? If we CAN bring him back to the world of the living; do we just use curing spells to do so? I have a pair of Cure Lights and a pair of Cure Serious; but it might take all of them to just bring him back to 0 or a low positive number....I'm just wondering what the options are here....thoughts?

Xale will let out a breath of relief at the defeat of the monstrous skeletal warrior and then rush over and do his best to bandage up the fallen halfling*. Hearing Zoster's question; the Dwarven warrior-priest answers with a solemn; "Indeed....I believe we have to continue searching this place for whatever treasures and answers it may hold to complete the mission Zoster just mentioned."

Glancing at the other chests in the room; he suggests; "Well...I believe we should risk opening these chests to discover their contents; but perhaps it woud be best if only one of us opens it while the others move back to the edges of the room and prepare weapons or spells for any more sinister surprises...I volunteer to open the next. Thoughts?"

*Curing Spell(s) may be used pending replies on the situation with Fosco

Fosco is at -23 from max HP, not at -23 total. I should have made that more clear. Because his character sheet was accidentally deleted, I don't know what "max HP" should be until I find a player who wants to take over the character. The player who takes over Fosco will re-roll his HP. If no one takes over the character, the max HP will be irrelevant.

So far I've had two people pass on taking over Fosco and another not respond. I just sent out a pm to a fourth. By my count, there are only two or three more people on the list, so we should know Fosco's fate soon. I'll wait to decide Fosco's fate until Friday. If no one steps up to take over his character by then, he is DOOMED. Until then, he should be as safe without additional healing as anyone else in the party.

The party stands frozen, paralyzed by fear and indecision. Do the remaining chests contain your doom, or the keys to saving the royal family? The wrong choice could be disastrous.

Xale is the first to break out of the trance. "I believe we should risk opening these chests," he says. But he plans to do so prudently. "Perhaps it would be best if only one of us opens it while the others move back to the edges of the room and prepare weapons or spells for any more sinister surprises." He bravely volunteers to open the chest and asks his companions for their opinions. Dead-eyed silence is the only response.

"I have my doubts that there is anything contained therein that will provide any material clues to this place. While there might be loot that may benefit us, I fear that it is overshadowed with the risk of death." Mason shrugs his shoulders before continuing. "But who am I to say how another chooses to live.....or die, as the case may be."

We may also check what lies in the other path that we were following before entering the room. says Zoster the druid If that takes us nowhere we can always return here and seek more clues. What we could do before that, though, is to search this room for hidden doors or traps.

The party continues to deliberate over whether to open another chest. Mason expresses his doubts that there is anything in the chests that will provide any material clues to surviving the tomb. "While there might be loot that may benefit us," he says, "I fear that it is overshadowed with the risk of death."

Worren continues to ponder the verse they found, hoping for a clue. But he finds no answers there.

Zoster suggests that the party could explore another path and return to the chests later.

As the party continues to mull its next move, Zoster starts wandering the edges of the room, looking for hidden doors or traps. When he reaches the middle of the north wall, he looks up and spots something high on the wall: a three-foot wide rough circle outline in the stonework ten feet above the floor.

Worren

Worren pauses a moment, recites some verse in an odd language accompanied by a flourish of his hands and takes a closer look at the rough circle outline to see if it is trapped.

"Give me a moment to see if I can find any traps on or near it," he then says to his companions.
