Are you breaking camp and bringing mercs with you, or basically just consolidating the two search parties and taking a look?

I think we should leave the mercs and just merge the groups

Yeah, let's consolidate.

Sixthmonth, Eighteenthday
Hex 226.117?
10:00 am

The adventurers head back to the blocked cave, bringing the mercenaries with them this time in case their labor is needed. As they travel north a wind begins to blow from the north, into their faces, bringing with it colder air and a spitting drizzle. By the time the cave is reached the rain has stopped but the cooler temperatures remain, a perhaps welcome respite from the summer's heat.

The stones blocking the cave do not seem to have moved since the adventurers were here the previous day although now the moss-covered stone surfaces are slick with rain.

Horatio

I'll make sure that I have all coins off my person, move everyone outside of the range of the spell and then cast locate object for coins at the cave entrance.

Horation detects the presence of coins behind the wall of stones.

"Myself, I am afraid of hard labor, but I guess there's nothing for it." He quite unhappily begins to move the rocks listening for the sound of anything inside.

Sixthmonth, Eighteenthday
Hex 226.117?
3:00 pm

It takes most of the rest of the day -- and varying degrees of grumbling -- before enough stone is cleared away from the opening. Only so many people can work there at a time, the stones are slick with moss and moisture, and many require two, even three people to roll away, much left lift. Shortly after noon Newton and Horation both feel the hair on the back of their necks stand on edge, as if they were being silently observed, but upon looking around they don't see anything.

The rocks finally moved, a shallow cave -- more a cleft no more than ten feet deep -- is revealed. Leaning on the far wall is a skeleton dressed in fine, but decayed clothing, and at its feet are three wooden chests. The skeleton does not appear to be animate.

"Seems a poor way to go, buried alive. Of course, he may not have been alive when he was entombed here." He makes a careful sweep for traps in the cave. If he finds none, he will have a look at the chests.

Svenn doesn't spy any traps in the cave, nor do the chests appear to be trapped, although they do look to be locked.
Rolls redacted.

"Uh...certainly! I love nothing more than helping along the next generation." The look on his face says that there are in fact many things he loves more.

"When it comes to traps, my young Wilter, if there is a doubt, there is no doubt. That's the first thing they teach you. The rest of you might want to stand back while I attempt to open these." He will attempt to unlock one of the chests. If successful, he will stand to the side as far away as possible and open it.

Could I use my knowledge of history to place a general time period on the skeleton (assuming it has clothes or armor on) and chests?

"Goshawk! Come here and look at this skeleton. Would you say this is...or was a man or woman?"
Goshawk is proficient in healing...that's not a great fit here but I'm hoping between the two of them they can figure this out.
