Forest Trail, Helix to Ironguard. Duchy of Aerik.

2.20pm: Sunshine. Light breeze.

The quartet take up positions either side of the trail to watch the proceedings as the fast racing clip-clop of horses comes around a bend in the trail. Proceeding from Helix village towards the citadel is a woman on a horse. She whips it furiously with tricorn hat, urging it to outrun a trio of pursuing men who steadily gain ground upon her tiring steed. As they close, the mounted men trigger crossbows ... the first two bolts going high and wide while the third strikes into the flank of the horse, bringing it down. The rider goes tumbling over crashing to the floor just a few feet from your positions. The trio reload, unaware of your presence as is the woman who injured, begins to feebly crawl away.

Dalin attempts to move off silently into cover and will aim for one of the men with the crossbows.

Roll me a check vs your move silently skill. Success means you can take a +2 bonus for a rear shot. Roll attack macro and damage. (Remember crossbow damage in the House Rules topic has been increased by type).

Roll initiative as well please.

Vann Hector

It is difficult to hide and watch the three mounted men prepare to charge down the now defenceless woman. Seemingly defenceless, what does he know?

He looks at Dawg Dann to see if he knows who they are. When he realizes that Dalin has sneaked off it seems we are about to commit so he steps out choice made and interposed himself between riders and the woman.

"Gentleman. Three rough riders against a lady. It is no fair game. Put down your bows and begone." He tries to sound intimidating to the guards, too far away to engage in melee.

Rondahl the Grim

"How did I ever survive the pits, making weapon choices like this?" Rondahl thinks as he sees the crossbows and looks to his own trident. Seeing Vann choose the direct path, Rondahl joins him, brandishing his trident in such a manner as to indicate serious intent. "He is not alone," he says in full voice, swinging his head back and forth to close the gates on his helm.
"There is no spoon."

Forest Trail, Helix to Ironguard. Duchy of Aerik.

2.22pm: Sunshine. Light breeze.

Before Dawg Dann can signal him to stop, the elf rogue steps out from behind the forest foilage and shields the fallen figure of a caped woman. She smiles as if the gods have answered her prayers, "They were trying to capture me, rob me or worse." she says standing defiantly. Rondahl backs them up, suddenly evening the odds and he braces for the riders to take his challenge. The men rein in their horses to trot closer but a crunching of branches underfoot cause them to jerk around to a new threat, Dalin the dwarf loosing his crossbow which flies to impact a rider in the shoulder. The trio return fire, the leader shooting at the pair in front. Despite Vann Hector's best intentions the crossbow shaft flies by him and strikes the unnamed rider who falls to the floor.

As the rear riders try frantically to reload after shooting at Dalin without effect. The leader draws his sabre and charges, intent on hacking the guardians down.

Dawg Dann steps out of cover to pull the woman off the trail.

Rondahl the Grim

Rondahl attempts to sidestep and drive upwards with his trident at the same time, but the move proves to be a bit too complicated, and the attack fails to find a purchase.

Forest Trail, Helix to Ironguard. Duchy of Aerik.

2.23pm: Sunshine. Light breeze.

The chaotic scene on the trail continues. The two mounted bowmen load and release shafts quicker, one aiming at the dwarf currently dodging behind a thick tree trunk which erupts in splinters as the bolt strikes in to it, the other aiming at the warrior seeking to dismount his comrade.

A reaction rebuff by Rondahl is enough to raise his buckler to snare the bolt before it impales him. The sabre rattling horseman charges into the fray, chopping and hacking either side of him without effect. Neither Vann Hector or the gladiator can stab the rider as his horse bucks and whinnies among them.

Dawg Dann and Dalin both miss with spear and bolt and to compound the status quo, the woman stands and points two hand held crossbows at the riders, the twang of string followed by a thud of wood, her bolts closer to the pigeons than anything else.

Sabres are drawn and the two riders seek to emulate the third by hacking these saviours of the woman.

next actions and initiative from first poster please.

Rondahl the Grim

Undeterred by their apparent lack of success so far, Rondahl continues to attack the nearest rider with his trident, thrusting upward to injure and, hopefully, dismount as well.

The abysmal martial skills on show means the melee drags on. Poor attempts to hack and slash or shoot, go high and wide except a three pronged attack by Rondahl which unseats the rider, unceremoniously landing in the mud.

Rondahl, seeking to quickly end this opponent, quickly stabs him again, driving him deeper into the mud, the tines of his trident sinking deep.

sorry i got us into this battle guys but hey my luck turned around on this roll.. only if you win initiative ...

April 29th 1066

Forest Trail, Helix to Ironguard. Duchy of Aerik.

2.25pm: Sunshine. Light breeze.

Critters initiative [1d6]=1

Ah-ah! Reacting quicker, Rondahl impales the fallen rider before he can stand. Dalin takes his mounted opponent to the ground, Dawg Dann and Vann Hector both miss. The surviving rider whirls his sabre. He jerks his horse around and slaps its hinds to gallop it back down the road to Helix. The encounter ends with one dead horse and two dead men in the dirt. Perhaps those bug critters you met earlier will come and feast on them.

The woman, dusts herself down. "I should thank you. Providence indeed blessed me this day." She busies herself calming one of the riderless horses.

Dawg Dann, "These men are dressed in militia gear. They are guards from Helix."

Dalin winces hearing Dann's words "Damn... so I guess I'll have to find somewhere else to go now. Saved a lady but damned for it now aren't we..." the dwarf trails off... "Sorry guys. I really did it this time." Coming back into his thinking verbalizing parts of it "It was a knee jerk reaction see a lady in trouble and try to save her..."
