At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
Re: At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
Ethan will take the house Reed, Umber, and Mormont Shields, and bundle them in his sack.

Ethan nods at Antheris' wisdom. "You are right. Time enough for trophies when we have victory." Ethan will leave the shields, for now.

Re: At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
Date: Autumn, 432 ca., Campaign Day 1
Time: 20:55
Weather: 40 degrees, heavy rain
Location: STEADING OF THE HILL GIANT CHIEF, Barracks
Nearest Safe House: First of the First Men, 5.5 miles southeast
Magic in Effect:
Antheris:
- Call Lightning (expires in 3 turns)
- Protection from Fire (cast on treant)
*****************************************************
The party completes its search of the room, uncovering a few interesting items, but nothing that truly furthers their mission.
Gaerys picks up a fist-sized amethyst inside the skull, and stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Ethan, ready to open the double doors to the south.
[Going to give other party members one last chance to contribute to the search of the room or anything else.]

Re: At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
Gaerys puts the amethyst in a bag. When the rest of the party has finished searching the room, he will slowly open the door to the south and peek into the room beyond.
I'm not sure what else to search in this room. Maybe look behind all the shields? Otherwise, it's probably time to resume our primary mission of kicking giant butt.

Re: At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
Gaerys begins to slowly open the door outward. As it cracks open, the ranger's cautious approach is interrupted by the sudden assault of a huge brown bear, at least the size of Blue!
Bristle-backed and growling, the bear rips into Gaerys with both claws and his teeth. All of its blows land, and the bear then takes the ranger into a violent embrace!
[Bear smelled party and was waiting to ambush them, so it got a round of surprise.]
[23 damage!]
The ranger does well to slide free of the deadly hug, but the beast again takes initiative and attacks, landing only a single claw attack this round.
[Gaerys takes 7 damage!]
[Party is up!]

Re: At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
Oof. Starting out at 20/56 hp!
Gaerys recovers from the attack and counter-strikes.
Giantbane (vs. L non-giant): [1d20+2] = 15+2 = 17 Damage: [1d12+2] = 4+2 = 6
He hits, but both he and Giantbane are less deadly against the bear than the giants.
ETA: Unfortunately, I only thought of this after I rolled the attack, but the bear might make a good ally if it could be charmed. If I can take back the attack and have Gaerys back away in a fighting retreat while Antheris attempts to charm the bear, I will. Can an actively attacking animal be charmed?

Vorsyin was in the middle of speaking When we get to a safe area I can inspect the treasure we find to look for magical .... when he is interrupted by the surprise attack of the bear!
Re: At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
I will allow all of this, but with a small bonus to its saving throw due to it attacking. The rest of the party would have to hold their attacks this round, however.Zhym wrote:Oof. Starting out at 20/56 hp!

That is a nasty "trap" -- right out of the module.

Antheris the Druid and Blue the Polar Bear
Blue moves next to and ahead of the druid ready to intercept an attack from his ursine cousin, while Antheris takes out some of his best mistletoe and casts Charm Person or Mammal on the misguided brown bear.

Re: At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
The cave bear comes to a sudden halt, puts all four paws on the ground, licks its lips, and looks up bashfully at Antheris.
[Natural 2 on its save!]
Beyond the door, the party sees a well-appointed and plush (for a hill giant anyway) bedroom full of soft furs and carved wooden furnishings. The furnishings and other ornaments in the room, not to mention the musk, strongly suggest that it is the lair of a high-ranking female.
The party does not see any giants or other living things of significance in the room.

Re: At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
Gaerys contemplates petting the newly-docile bear, then feels a twinge in one of his claw-wounds and thinks better of it. Instead, he'll start searching the room—checking under rugs, inspecting the walls, and looking for anything else of interest.

Ethan Blacktyde
Ethan holds off on killing the bear, and is relieved when it becomes docile. He joins Gaerys in giving the room a quick once over, checking drawers and the space under the bed for anything of interest.
"More women. She may have a key to the chief's room, though."

Antheris
Antheris smiles and gives the cave bear an understanding nod, and then motions for it to take his left flank, while Blue has his right.
He then looks the cave bear over for any shackles or collars, and if he is able, removes them from the bear.

Luna looks at Antheris Where's my bear? You can't go hogging all the animals. At least give me a cat or something!
Re: At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
Gaerys expresses his gratitude Luna for the healing. "I seem to be in frequent need of your ministrations this evening. Thank you again."
He will also imbibe the potion of healing to try to get closer to fighting strength.
Potion of healing: [2d4+2] = 4+2 = 6
HP updated to 42/56. Potion of healing marked off.

Vorsyin wasn't planning on it, I think it was more of a general thought. Why is there anything I should look at ?

Re: At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
Sounds like a hint to me. Although I'm sure our DM would deny it.
Re: At the Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
The druid slipped a jewel-encrusted collar off of the neck of the bear. And so it was that the party acquired one more ally for their inevitable showdown with the hill giants (and whatever allies awaited).
The ranger and noble fighter give the room a once-over and, indeed, find two keys ... one chest-sized and another that would seem appropriate for a hill giant-sized door. The remainder of the chests and drawers contain clothing and the like.
Where next?
