Meetings in the Meanwhile

#1 Post by thirdkingdom »

This thread can be used to narrate any meetings between old and new PCs before the official IC thread is lost. For Ardath it probably makes sense for the meeting to occur in the rough and tumble frontier town of Alice.

"I'm going to get fat, and you'll leave me for some skinny young thing!" Brixa pouted as she led the way down to the common room. Laughter and tabak smoke wafted up the stairwell. Mugs made solid thunks as both serving girls refilled heavy wooden tables of happily paying customers.

"You're going to get healthy, and I'll dote on you no matter what you look like," Ardath replied, and then grinned. "Besides, you'll need energy later. So will I."

"Says you." Brixa turned and stuck out her tounge at him, grinned, and then wiggled just right.

Ardath sighed, and then smiled. "It's good to be the priest..."

- - -

Brixa worked the room to gather news; Ardath had gotten what he needed earlier in the day. Clean clothes for the two of them. At a small price, the name and description of one of the adventurers who had led the exploration. The news was even better, the man was to be at the inn this very evening.

His tabak pouch in place, and enough coin in his purse, Ardath moved around the room and talked. Finally, by description and demeanor, he found the man he sought. He moved forward, with arms relaxed and hands away from any weapons. The man was obviously as much at home in the wilderness as anywhere.

"Sir, I'm looking for a man called Newton? Is that you?" Ardath said. "I'm Ardath, my wife and I are new here. Would you have time to talk?"

Alice
Sixthmonth, Thirdday

Newton has come south to Alice with the tanned hydra skin to try and find a leatherworker capable of turning it into quality armor. He asks around for the better part of a day, and is finally directed to a small, dingey building on the outskirts of town. The inside is surprisingly well lit, with oil lanterns hanging from the support posts. An older woman, hair at her temples turned silver with age, bends over a workbench, pommel on one hand forcing a large needle through a thick hide. She introduces herself as Bia Ilvall and takes a look at the tanned leather Newton has brought. "Hydra-skin," she says, examining it with a critical eye, "I've worked with this before. Been awhile. Whoever tanned it did a decent job, but look at all this scarring." She points at the multiple rents in the hide. "Next time you bring something like this down it's best to use blunt weapons, or find yourself a sorcerer that can kill with but a word." She brings an oil lantern over and holds it above the skin. "I can do something with this," she says, "but you need to tell me what you want. I can make you two, maybe three, suits of high-quality armor*. Depends on how much these sword and arrow-scars get in the way. However, if you want, I can also fashion you a suit worthy of enchantment, though I can't do the enchanting. It's a wasteful process, though, and I doubt I'll be able to get more than a single suit. Alternately, I can buy it from you, for, say, 750 gold."

After meeting with Master Ilvall Newton returns to his room at the inn, then ventures down into the common room for dinner. He is soon approached by a man with a godly mien . . .

Newton and Master Ilvall

Newton nods and looks thoughtful. "I shall take your advice regarding weapons. Tell me master Ilvall, are you able to work with dragon hide? Not that I currently have any, but who knows what the future will bring"

I assume this means similar to the drake-hide? either +1 AC or reduced encumbrance?

Newton at the Inn

Newton sits at a table with Ribar, Toma and Wilter. The events of the day have put him in a good mood, he has his new armour and the hydra hide is on it's way to be turned into something useful. He is enjoying the good food and ale when a man arrives at the table
Leitz wrote:"Sir, I'm looking for a man called Newton? Is that you?" Ardath said. "I'm Ardath, my wife and I are new here. Would you have time to talk?"
Smiling, Newton looks the man up an down, with an appraising eye. "That is me, Newton Longville, known as 'Drakesbane' to some. his smile deepens and his hand seems to unconsciously move and touch his armour, a splendid set of obviously superior leather armour with an unusual green-brown mottling."I have plenty of time to talk, this evening at least. We return north in the morning." he gestures to an empty chair. "Please sit, would you like some ale?"

Newton and Master Ilvall

Newton thinks for a moment and comes to a decision.

Master Ilvall, could you make me two quality suits of armour, one for me and for Wilter here? He needs all the protection he can get. Then, if there is enough left, could you make me a saddle and saddlebags? What would the cost be?"

Master Ilvall

The armourer does some quick calculations. "You're providing the material, so that's a savings there . . . looks like I can do the armor for 500 gold total, and let's call the saddle and bags another 100 gold. It'll be about two months before everything is done."

"Thank you master Ilvall, that is most acceptable."

Newton hands over the hide and 600gp from his cut of the orc spoils. He also provides the master details of how to contact their factor when it's complete.

"Ale is fine, though your mention of returning north has my attention. We arrived scant days ago, and our meager belongings are still mostly packed," Ardath said as he took a seat across the table. "I've a mind to keep moving, if it's the right thing to do. If you're game, would you take a meal in return for answering a traveler's questions?"

Assuming the affirmative

Ardath waved a woman to him, and then placed a gentle arm around her waist before returning to face Newton. "This beautiful creature is my wife, Brixa. If I occasionally seem to be distracted, well, now you know why."

He pulled her close, for a moment, and then released her. "We're going to eat well, tonight, and perhaps resume our journey to the north in the morning. Please join us when the food is here, and be thinking about how to get everything ready. Newton is the man I heard about, and I'd like to be ready to move early."

"That's not what you usually mean by needing energy,"
Brixa said. She looked at Newton and his men, and then curtsied. Her voice took on a husky, dramatic flair. "Noble warriors; I am commanded to attend shortly, please, excuse me for a while to abase myself properly."

Brixa rolled her eyes, turned, and wiggled a little as she left.

"The love of my life. Now, if I knew how to help her grow into a proper lady..." Ardath sighed, and then turned back to Newton. For a moment he was distracted, but refocused enough to ask a serving girl for six meals. "Where were we? Ah, north. We have a few boxes that were loaded onto other's wagons; my vestments, books, all our few worldly goods, really. When you say north, are we heading to another town, or into the wilderness to achieve a goal and return here?"

He glanced at the path Brixa had left by, and then his gaze returned to Newton. "You see my concern. She is a strong woman, more than even I know. Yet the city did not prepare her for adventures in the wild. I am a priest, and have traveled before."

Newton in the Inn

"You're a priest?" he gestures to the oldest looking of the three young men with him "Ribar here is a cleric of Manifest. he pauses, before continuing " You want to travel north? I need to be blunt, and I mean no disrespect, but it is dangerous to the north. We plan to rejoin our friends who are currently staying in Draea, halfway to Kimrid. We've been helping the siderenos, the ironskins, clear out some troublesome orc tribes, and we even fought a Hydra. Both the inhabitants of Draea and Kimrid have their own cultural deities and it will be a challenge to change their beliefs. We've also heard some hints of human settlements out in the wilds that survived the last cycle and we hope to reconnect with them."

Ardath and Newton

Ardath nodded respectfully to Ribar. "Each of us chooses our spiritual path, just as we choose our temporal path. I can't convert anyone, but I offer another choice. One that suits me well, and may suit others. I am Solvergn*."

He sipped his ale and looked at Newton. "Blunt? No. Honest words are a gift. Let me return the favor in kind. I can beat the average orc in a one on one combat, though I'd certainly run from a dozen of them. You fought a hydra? I have heard of them; ferocious beasts and difficult to kill. If but half the old tales are true then you are mighty warriors indeed!"

"There are people further out? Then going there would suit us well. I have a mind to build a chapel, but don't yet know where. Breaking new ground, or rediscovering lost colonies, sounds interesting. Are you planning on establishing a forward area there or returning here between forays?" He leaned back as the serving girls laid trenchers and bowls in front of them. Pausing, he looked at Ribar and then grinned. "It is of custom to give thanks for the blessing of a good meal. Would you do that for us?"

Newton laughs "Gardo and Feargus are the warriors, not I, although I can certainly look after myself. We also are rather good with our bows."

"We hear hints of villages, and lost ancient tombs, some may be real, who knows. Although, when we do go looking we do seem rather good at finding the tombs with undead guardians. We have a factor here in Alice and one in Rhea's Ford that help to look after our dealings while we are away.

Ribar looks a little surprised, then smiles and nods:

"Manifest, we thank you for the success of Alice, the growth of the farms, and the food it brings. We ask your blessings as we travel to the North to return the lost to civilisation as is your command"

Ardath and Newton

"Hmm...after days on the trail, this is too good to ignore," Ardath said. He dug into his meal; eating well without making a mess. After several bites, and a refreshed mug, he said, "Treasure, ancient or no, can lead men to live in their weaknesses. We all have them. While I am interested in learning more, I realize you may want to know more of me before sharing your confidence. Perhaps we can learn of each other over time?

Brixa struggled to eat without making a mess. She blushed, and watched Ardath eat. He glanced at her often, and smiled every time. When she showed him an empty bowl, he smiled and said "Thank you for honoring me and the cook. You make me proud to be your husband."

Once the food is done, bowls removed, and mugs refilled, Ardath leaned back in his chair and brought out his pipe. "Would your company have need of another priest? If so, what supplies should I procure before we leave? How long will the journey to our next town be?"

"We are always looking for like-minded companions. Draea is around a day and a half travel by horse. You have horses I assume? If not you should buy some, and I can check what you currently have and advise on any other stuff you might need to get by in the wilderness. We can talk as we travel. When you meet the rest of the group at Draea we can decide if we think it'll work out"

Ardath and Newton

Ardath shook his head. "We've been riding in caravan wagons or walking alongside the mules. I know a reputable stable that could part with two horses, and tack. Neither of us are trained to ride war mounts, but we do know how to ride. I've learned to care for them, as well."

He paused, and looked directly at Newton. "Gut feel for the trip; should my wife go with us or stay here?"

"Honestly? Leave your wife, and those crates of yours, here in Alice, at least for now. We can put her in touch with our factor to help her settle in. Once you've had a chance to scope out the situation up north you can always come back for her. Ultimately, it's your choice, but it's what I would do."

Ardath nodded. Not happily, but with resolution. "If you can introduce us to your factor, I would appreciate it."

"Hmm..." He nodded again, and looked around. "On the way here, one of the older soldiers was talking about needing a stake for his tent making business. He offered to sell me his horse, and gear, but it was just the one. Let me see if I can find him, and if the offer is still open. The horse was solid, if not exceptional, and the gear was well cared for. It should be more than enough for my needs, even with your recommended additions for wilderness travel."

He waved the serving girl over, stood, and paid for everyone's meal. "If we are to leave in the morning, let me secure the mount quickly. Would your factor be available this evening, or better to talk to them early tomorrow? How long will it take to gather your recommended supplies?"
