Kit

Kit picks up a couple of stiff drinks and tries to find an opening to have a conversation with the Colonel about potential openings in the SEMC.

Frank

To Vitt: "You contract is ending? We are recruiting you know, and down an officer. Think about it, the Sargent-Major is our recruiting officer"

To Wagner: "A fight would have changed nothing, my client wanted to leave and the reality is that you have more resources than the SEMC, although you would have had to fight for each metre. " he smiles "I think the Colonel would appreciate it if you did speak with him, the poor man was a Major this morning"

At some point Frank spots Kit hovering:

"Good evening Colonel. Did you want to speak about something?"

ooc: Frank let's Jess know Skip's resigned, poached by 4DC.

On "Sergeant's intuition" Gaughan goes to "check his lads are settling in" and returns with a full kit bag of bottles muttering "Sure they're like children!" He then locks the drink securely away. [/dialog]
Jess laughs and glances at the stack of ammunition boxes in her office: Wonder what's left fer the gentlefolk ter drink in there? Coloured water an' hand sanitiser, prob'ly.
Enjoying the novelty of his office he awards himself a drink for a job well done. He calls through "Him? You were nearly there - just a "w" out! The lads used to call him "the wandering genie" so they did... " he smiles and takes a sip as he pauses for effect " ...because he'd lost his bottle". He goes on "Now, you can't pick on the other fellas' for fitness. They're lucky to still retain the use of their legs! Not only have they been in the Guard they were constantly fed cake and driven around by other people. I hear that happens a lot in the cavalry..."
Her smile at the genie comment soon disappears: Are you callin' me fat, you cheeky git? Her good humour soon returns: Still fit in me Number 2 Dress, didn't I? Mostly. An' yer didn't seem ter mind the bits as bulge before. Anyway, it's Armour as gets broad in the beam from sittin' about. Cavalry's diffr'nt. Dashin' about the place, not ploddin'.

So the other two're worth an interview, are they? I'll invite 'em in, in the mornin'.

Franks message arrives and Jess sends back: Not surprised, they've got a pair of recruiters I'm definitely not going into competition with.

Kit

"Good evening Colonel, as things are winding down here on Inchin and with my ticket finally complete, I wanted to see if there would potentially be a position for a me within the SEMC. I do know that administrative position that I had with Baron is not something that I enjoyed, my best day here was when I was working with your unit."

Frank

To Kit: "Well, we are recruiting, although not for Colonels." he smiles "We are looking for good officers to manage a squad though, and as we are expanding this is an opportunity to help guide any position into areas you're particularly interested in. We're a small unit where flexibility is key. The Sargent-Major is our recruiting officer, so send her your resume and have a chat. Although I'm happy to answer any questions you might have. I'd be interested to hear of your military career, although there will be plenty of time for that, and to talk of the future, during the journey back to Collace."

Kit

"Before yesterday, I was never a Colonel. I will send my resume the Sargent-Major and as you said we can talk on the journey to Collace and if there is match we can go from there. Thank you for your time Colonel and I look forward to our longer chat." Kit shakes the Colonel's hand and heads back to get another drink, while sending his resume to the Sargent-Major (done via PM).

Jess receives the resume and scans it. Good candidate to replace Skip. Decent skills, seen a few fights, got some brag-rags. Lucky too, no slow-to-duck badges among them. Pity he's another Bootneck.

She texts Frank: Received Mr. Ghoshal's resume. Strong candidate. Interviewing tomorrow a.m.

Frank

The Baron's dinner concludes and the guests disperse to various diversions arranged for their further distraction. Frank is aware of some interest in a card game. Kirsten Vitt approaches and, after declaring she will think about his offer, states “You should play your hand Colonel – after all you have a seat at the table”. Frank sees that Wint and Kidd stand on the door to the drawing room where the card table is set up. The players seem to be Drace Keening, a sour faced man Frank recognises as Courtnay McClelland, The Baron and Duran. The dealer is Erica who is also tending a proxy hand set before an empty seat.

Sure enough Frank finds he has a place reserved for him set next to yet another empty chair. House staff enquire briefly as to his needs, bring him a drink and leave the (high end) bottle before withdrawing.

Drace Keening stands to welcome Frank and usher him to his seat as Kirsten Vitt takes post inside the room. “Colonel Cross, we are all impressed - both by your liaison ability with the delegation and your unit's performance. A one hundred percent kill ratio to no loss speaks for itself. That is very much the way we like to deal with competition!” Those present who do either corporate or diplomacy chuckle dutifully.

Duran sips his scotch and nods amiably at Frank while Erica ripple shuffles the deck and dextrously cuts it one handed.

Frank takes a seat "Thank you Deputy Director, I am very pleased at with the performance of my troops on this mission. We did have one serious injury, but they are on ice ready to be fixed up on Collace. So, what's the game?"

He returns Duran's node with a smile.

Wint and Kidd nod to Vitt before closing the double doors from the outside. While drinks are charged Drace Keening holds court “While I'm aware we have absent friends I assure you both are fully briefed and so I'll begin. Ladies and Gentlemen, as merchants and business people we all understand the need for stability and the rule of law to facilitate trade and confidence in the market. I'm sure all here cherish and uphold those values dear to us all”. This last generates a “Hear, hear!” from the Baron who waves his glass so excitedly that both the umbrella and a maraschino cherry are ejected from his alcopop.

Erica deals cards and Frank is relieved to discover that the game is poker. The Baron declares a lack of knowledge and, with the agreement of all, a demonstration hand is played but with the cards still kept private while Erica talks the Baron and the other players through the options with her “open” hand.

Frank finds his first two cards are a pair of eights.

Erica doesn't even look his way.

Keening continues “Therefore, it falls to those of us thrust into positions of authority to take action to the benefit of the trade of all”.

A single sonorous knock at the double doors precedes them being opened in concert by Wint and Kidd who clearly have an eye for the theatrical (or at the very least musical theatre). A delighted Keening announces “The Lady Polly Iyhlua, personal representative of Yūgure, The Twilight and spokesperson for Teahleikhoi, the Regiment of the Falling Night”. He has clearly been practising his Trokh pronunciation and with all the smoothness of a panther in a silk pyjamas he glides across to pull out Polly's chair. Polly sits, clearly content with the appropriateness of the attention - and then plays footsie with Frank. He notes that she seems quite “animated” which usually bodes well for Frank but less for his planned early start in the morning.

Frank smiles and stands as Polly enters and sits once she is seated. He also plays his part enthusiastically in the footsie game.

He also doesn't believe that the Baron doesn't know poker, that's the oldest trick in the book.

Jess signs out and closes the link to Gaughan. A last check on the work and she heads back to her stateroom for a shower and the bed she expected to be in hours ago.

Kicking off her boots she remembers Freya's reaction to her first fight and comments to herself Pastoral care.

Calling Freya on a private channel she asks: Hey Hun, crazy night, eh? You want ter come over an' chat?

Frank

Erica deals again and Frank gets the black aces to go with his black eights. He finds his hole card is a Joker. Ending her "tutorial" hand Erica collects and disposes of the cards dealt.

Keening, warming to his task announces “Piracy is a scourge on trade and must be stamped out by all law abiding folk wherever it is found. Only recently, in the latest example of this blatant outbreak of piracy, an innocent Aslan trading vessel was fired upon as it travelled to Collace from the Trojan Reach”. Keening pops up some holo footage of a thousand ton plus clan trader taking sporadic fire from an unknown source. Initially the Aslan ship's turrets return fire until the doors over its bay weaponry retract and then the trader torrents fire at its unseen assailant. Keening anxiously stops the vid. "Um, yes. However, as honest traders, my dear friends of House McClellan are also too aware of the predations of pirates”.

Courtnay McClellan, sensing the need for a response, manages a minimalist smile - although it could have been a twitch or maybe even "wind". Meanwhile, the Baron seems quite beside himself and rants “Those API villains are behind the whole thing!” He excitedly downs his alcopop in one and then claws about hopelessly in an attempt to open another. Kirsten Vitt leans in and opens it for him absently pinning the Baron's idly groping hand in a painful lock with her left hand whilst pouring his drink, adding ice, an umbrella and a cherry with her right. Now both chastened and "refreshed" the Baron massages his tender wrist but wears the smitten look of a man in love.

Believing he has warmed up his audience enough Keening gets to the point. “Colonel, it gives me great pleasure to announce that McClellan Factors are sponsoring an anti piracy mission on Avastan. The corporation, in combination with their businesss partners, are offering this as a pro bono service to the District. However, that of course means they are covering your fees: transport, ammunition and “fair use” wear and tear. I believe the five million credit contract is very generous including the option to buy out the 30% lien McClellan claim on any prizes taken. Given the “goodwill” involved the stipulation of “Success Only” seems only fair”.

Keening smiles “If I may be so bold I look to our honoured guests for any contributions with which to “sweeten” the pot. This being something of a charity affair". Skipping Frank he looks to Polly who announces “One fire team of Teahleikhoi Reserve Warriors”. Courtnay McClellan simply states “We will cater to the strategic transport and communication needs of the endeavour”. Duran contemplates his call for a moment and then picks up not standard chips but a stack the high denomination plaques at his elbow. He lays down five one million credit tokens and calmly says “Mister Keening, 4DC and The Shore will match you – but in kind. One fire team of 4DC mercs and no contest over taken prizes”. Keening looks more than concerned “Those terms with our “fair use” clause leaves the whole enterprise dangerously exposed!” Duran restrains his smile and replies smoothly “Such is the burden of “pro bono” Mister Keening. However, I'm sure Colonel Cross will have a care with our valuable assets. I have absolute confidence in the rising star of SEMC – don't you?”

Rather discomforted Keening rallies and turns to Frank “Well, Colonel, what do you say?”

Frank smiles "I appreciate your confidence in the SEMC, and the terms are generous. Unfortunately, I'm not in the position of being able to agree to anything without discussing the offer with my business partners. I'm sure there will be questions, and we'd want to see a copy the contract before we decide. A commander needs to fully understand the mission objectives and constraints. I'm sure you understand."

Keening replies "But of course! If you agree in principle we can start on finalising the contract. Our needs are for a raid within one month to entirely destroy or put beyond use the pirate ground facilities on Avastan".

"Is it acceptable that I discuss this first thing in the morning with my partners and we give our provisional answer then? How much flexibility is there in the timescales? A month isn't much time when you include travel, preparation and intel gathering"

Frank

A few cautious hands of poker are played and the Baron is eventually persuaded from voicing his particular “tell” when being dealt a pair by shouting “Snap!”

During a break from play Duran approaches Frank and says “Colonel, I would not wish to tie your hands tactically by any means and I stand by the offer from 4DC. However, I realise that four of our specialists that Mr Keening deems to be too expensive to commit to combat might restrict your planning somewhat. Maybe I can offer something else that wouldn't... ah...” he smiles “cramp your style”.

“We have many specialist support units to facilitate your operation. For example a deep recon team to prepare your strike or perhaps we could simply supply you with an AFV? 4DC are currently upgrading our APCs. Those that we have are more than adequate for mid tech mercenary work but require upgrades for the higher end of the market. We have contracted a local retro fitting programme and so these hybrid vehicles' power plants are built on Collace and, therefore, can be maintained by local techs. We could gift you the equivalent of our bid in materiel to cover our end of the deal”. He smiles again “Then, if you break it - it's your own problem!”

Duran provides some suitably opaque details of the deep recon unit's abilities and, with more clarity, those of the APC*.

Polly also joins frank and seems particularly pleased with herself “I have received prior instructions from Yūgure regarding this prospect and she has allowed me discretion. It is, of course, a test. I too should declare the Clan troops that will take part in your venture. The Iyhlua Clan will provide four warriors from the reserve. They will be equipped to the standard of your troops and they also have a battlefield specialisation: assault”.

All

The Morning after the Night Before...

Dawn and hangovers break over Inchin while in the sangar atop the Mansion Baker gently wakes Easy to start her watch. Few on planet realise how their rest could have been non existent save for decisions made by those steering their fate but a short while ago.

Business decisions have been "agreed in principle" but amicably postponed pending "adjustments to contracts and due diligence".

The Swordy "mercs" maintain a highly disciplined and robust but low key presence about their billets in Star Town. They are effortlessly both "nails" and polite which is difficult to pull off but is entirely aided by the growing realisation of the population's acceptance of them as liberators. Camo clad soldiers leave their posts to aid townsfolk with burdens and Junge girls drive up close to flirt outrageously with their sentries. The whole town's mood is artistically captured by Baker's curtailed addendum to his morning report "It's all a bit like the start of this vid I saw wot, on the instruktions, said "Featuring Real Swordies" and... er... anyway there's been no visible threat or incident of note in Star Town and Barter Town's just... very peaceful".

Meanwhile Kit interviews openly with Jess and entirely supports his excellent CV.
