Quest #34 "The Search For The Ruined Tower”

Too Much Crabs
Earthday, 25th of Goodmonth
Noonish, Hot, Humid, Buggy

Feanol stares up at the babbling gnome in the tree when Keg shouts up for TK to secure a rope. Max seems lost to everything around him, unable to mentally process anything he sees at the moment. (I made the roll I requested from you, and failed.)

The silent crab ambles forward a bit further, almost as if it were taunting the other two. They both watch it for a second longer before suddenly ignoring it all together, returning their attention to the partially fleeing group. The distraction gives Keg, Keyon, and Elnaerel time to escape, while Gnodric and Darklin attempt one more stab at killing these tasty monsters.

Good news first, brave Gnodric plunges his longsword into a soft spot under the badly wounded crabs thick shell, shoving it in all the way into the beasts brain and killing it instantly. The behemoth falls to the rocky ground with a loud thud, its many legs still convulsing slightly as it dies.

Darklin doesn't have the same luck, not only unable to injure the remaining (less wounded) crab with his attack, but also unable to escape the things grasp once he tries to flee. One huge claw snaps loudly around the elven spellsword, nearly cutting his body in two separate pieces. 8 dam His limp form flops over slightly as he loses consciousness, now at the complete mercy of an angry (and likely hungry) giant crab, while most of his friends are moving away from the fighting.

Unsure if the creatures will be affected, but knowing its the only way to save Darklin, she throws her sleep spell at the two monsters.


Gnodric

Moves around the dying crab to see how Darklin is doing with the other one, he finally realizes a third is coming. He also hears familiar words being spoken by Feanol, and so moves to his right around the beast to help Darklin if he needs it after his cousin is finished. If the creature is still up after her spell he'll rush in and attack.

Turns and sees the one crab go down and the second grab up Darklin and curses. Damn it all!!! he adjust his grip on his sword and charges to Crab 2. He will try to move behind it so that Happy Crab is opposite of his position and hopefully leave Crab 2 flanketed.

For Odin!!! he howls and swings his sword at the Crabs backside trying to find a soft spot.

"Darklin! We've got to do something. I could still help him!"

She fires a sling stone at the damn crab (if the DM allows).

I'm gonna approach him next round and try to heal him with the last spell.

Winds up his sling and lets it fly at the big crab.

The elf frowns. "Why is that huge crab not doing any sound when it walks out with its pincers?"

The Knife

"It came out of the trees and undergrowth!" shouts The Knife from his elevated position. His next words are even louder, a curse as he realizes that there's another tree preventing him from throwing his darts at the big crab.

Max

Seeing a member of the troop fall in battle with Over-Grown Marine life is about all he can handle. He runs into the fray with his shield held high in his left hand/arm. Runs to Darklin and grabs the collar of his armor and keeps running back the way they came across the rocks. If he makes it through he will try to drag him away about 50 feet before stopping.

No problem, man. I will move the action along since it shouldn't matter anyway.

That Was Easy

While the crab with Darklin in its grasp slowly pulls the elf towards its snapping maw, Gnodric rushes around to see the third crab moving in even closer. Hearing Feanol's spell, and seeing her pinch of sand fly, the newest party member wisely decides to wait see how this all plays out before rushing into a possible spell effect. In the meantime, Keg runs back into the fight and smacks the second crab directly on a particularly hard barnacle, chipping a rather large hunk of steel from his sword blade. (-1 on damage until it can be repaired) Let's just say that Odin was not impressed.

Max and Elnaerel sling stones at the crab about to eat Darklin, skipping them off its hard outer shell harmlessly. I'm not sure why Max is trying to take 2 actions in one round, but I will take the first one posted so he doesn't rush in to ruin the sleep spell.) Keyon just flicks his long hair back, certain everything will be just fine eventually.

Right before the second crab falls asleep from Feanols magic, dropping the still bleeding body of Darklin to the hard stone, the third, much larger and happier crab suddenly turns away from the action, silently marching right back into the spotty forest where it came from. TK watches it quickly disappear back into the swampy morass beyond the foliage from the vantage of his elevated tree branch.

And just like that, the heated battle appears to be over.

Elnaerel doesn't waste any time. She runs towards Darklin and makes everything possible to staunch his wounds. "Someone kill the crab!" She says as she kneels next to the spellsword.

If there's need of using any item, cloth or something, just tell me and I can remove a large sack from her inventory.

Runs over to Darklin with his holy symbol out and casts Cure Light Wounds on him.

The Knife remains up in the tree for the moment. He keeps his eyes open just in case the giant crab decides to return.

Keyon

Keyon pads quietly toward the sleeping crab, still wary of the massive claw which nearly ended his brief life. He'll motion for others to help, seeking weak spots in the beast's natural armor. If his comrades will help, he gives a signal once all have found a spot to attack and plunges his blade into soft flesh. If no one joins in, he'll back away and let sleeping crabs lie.

If my shoddy prose isn't clear, I'm hoping others will gather round and we can all impale this thing and kill it in one fell swoop. I can't ever recall how this works by the book in 1e...if I need to make a roll, I will.

Keg growls angrily at the chip in his blade and is all too happy to help in dispatching the crab. He will take a good moment to find a soft spot and then study the beast for more soft or exposed spots for later incase the come across more... especially the big one. and hoping for better rolls. Sheesh!

This could have went better... damn it all.

Rushes forward to see if she can be of any help to her friend after the crab let go of him.

"Well I guess we now know where those mysterious crushed bodies came from" He says as he joins Keyon and Keg in dispatching the sleeping crab. "Now if we can figure a way into this monster we could harvest enough meat for a decent meal. A bit different than cracking them open after their boiled, but should be similar, or maybe just cutting off the claws will feed us"

Monster Crab Boil

TK stays aloft in his thorny tree, watching to make sure there are no more crabs coming out of the swampy area beyond the treeline.

Keg, Gnodric, and Keyon move in to gut the sleeping crab, killing it instantly.

Elnaerel, Max, and Feanol rush in to assess the dying Darklin, his unconscious form becoming a bit of a theme on these excursions recently. Max uses a prayer of healing on his fellow elf, bringing him groggily back to the land of the living. His guts still ache from where he was crushed by the claw, but he will apparently pull through.

With the sun now directly overhead, and the temperature rising, any edible meat from these crabs will need to be harvested soon before it spoils.

The Knife

The Knife climbs carefully down from the thorny tree. "That thing's not coming back. It disappeared way back in the trees over there." He shrugs his shoulders. "Must have just been a territorial warning or something."

The Knife looks on as the others get to work on the other crab. "Would anyone who's going to eat that nasty thing care to donate some actually edible food to a poor gnome who's about to throw up?"

This should help take away your pain. Stop squirming around and hold still.

Casts his last cleric spell for the day on Darklin to heal his injury. Waves his hands over Darklin's gut and Mumbles to Boccob.

"Heal this poor crab busted elf and take away his pain."

Still kneeling next to the wounded spellsword, the elven cleric looks at Max. "Max, I didn't know you devoted your life to the gods. Which one is the one that grants you this favour of being able to heal in his or her name?"

When he makes a further attempt to heal Darklin with such a relative success, she stands up and sighs. "I could still help him, but that would mean that I won't be able to ask Ehlenestra for water for ourselves today." She looks up at the clear sky with its ever brighter sun. "And the gods know we'll be in need of it."

She claps her hands. "Well, for the time being we should get these carcasses and ourselves into the shade of the jungle and start preparing them. I'll give you from my own rations, Knife, don't worry. We can rest there at least until it gets less hot. It sure will do us well, specially Darklin."

She then falls silent and keeps staring for a few seconds to where the huge crab appeared and then left, ruminating for that sort timespan, before getting to work.
