Quest #29 “Raiders of the Lost Obelisk”
Re: Quest #29 “Raiders of the Lost Obelisk”
Cealwyn Blackthorn
Laughing with the pure joy of battle and physical exertion, the ranger snarls and raises his blade to strike again, but a great shadow falls over him and he looks skyward to see the enormous beast raising its meaty fist.
The laughter dies in his throat at the sheer enormity of his foe and Cealwyn curses wickedly as he dodges back and to the other (southern) side of the obelisk. "Bonnie!" He shouts a warning as he retreats, sword raised in a defensive position.

Luther
Hey, Big Ugly! Over here! Luther roars as he sends two arrows at the big humanoid.
Longbow [1d20+1] = 14+1 = 15 longbow damage: [2d4+1] = 7+1 = 8
Longbow [1d20+1] = 7+1 = 8
Luther's hackles rise. He holds position for the moment.

Avaala the Grey
Using the confusion and the fact that none of the "other" Slizards are looking at him, Avaala casts a Comprehend Languages on himself and approaches the closest Slizard casually and attempts to just touch its shoulder. His plan is to just get the spell in play and listen to what they are saying, praying, warning us against, etc. If the Slizard says anything to him, Avaala just reacts according to what it said, knowing the spell only allows understanding, not speaking.
Do I need a roll for what would seem to be a 'friendly' touch?

Bonnie
"Crap, crap, crap. Of course they aren't the power here, it's that thing!" Bonnie tears herself away from the plaque and moves to the south side of the obelisk, but not before taking a look at the red letters.
She pulls her longsword and gets ready to play keep away from the hulk.
Is this thing ogre-like in size and shape?

It is ogre sized, yes. But it doesnt look like any ogre you have ever seen before.
No need for a roll on the touch from behind. I'd say there is enough distraction going on at the moment.

The Obelisk
Sunday, 21st of Goodmonth
Late Afternoon, Hot, Humid, Buggy
Bonnie reads the first line of the words forming on the plaque before moving around the clear obelisk to avoid the huge monster trying to kill Cealwyn. The boar is content to leave the fleeing ranger with the sharp sword alone, aiming its sights on the scattering elf this time instead. It charges Bonnie, leaving a small gash in her leg. 3 dam Cealwyn’s defensive posture does little to prevent the huge hideous beast with the razor sharp claws from attacking. The massive monster tears a huge wound into the side of the man, painfully rending through flesh and armor. 11 dam Mercifully, the ranger is barely able to evade the swipe from the second claw.
The beast lets out a roar when Luther and Grimm stick it with their bolts, but the damage it takes only seems to enrage the jungle monster even more. Paul stays at Chauncey’s side, unsure if he should attack the slizards since they are showing no aggression. He holds his sword out towards the shaman menacingly, looking for direction from his leader, who only smiles, pointing his wand in the direction of the lumbering behemoth upon the platform.
Wes calls forth the magic of the Shalm, causing the wild boar to suddenly freeze in place where it stands, eliminating one element from the tumultuous melee.
Avaala spends his time casting magicks that will allow him to understand the strange lizardfolks language. Though he knows he needs to touch one of them first, it shouldn’t be too difficult to do so in his current guise, especially since every one of them is currently fixated on the now glowing obelisk.
Chauncey aims his wand high at the massive target, since he isn’t exactly sure what is about to happen. He clearly pronounces the words “One Dress” loudly, causing a thin grey beam of energy to shoot forth, hitting the shoulder of the dangerous monster. The beast roars in pain as his entire right arm, from shoulder to claws, suddenly turns from green to black and quickly withers away into ash that flits away in the breeze.
“Oh my.” Chauncey exclaims aloud as he readies the magic wand for a second blast.

Avaala the Grey
Avaala, seeing that between Chauncey, Wes and the Rangers, this fight seems to be very one-sided, continues with his plan, touching the closest Slizard and beginning to gather what he can from their talk. Personally, he is hoping that the big monster, with the now missing arm, was dominating the Slizards and they'll be grateful for removing him from their village. But he doesn't let his hope get the better of him.

Wes
Wes considers the next spell he should cast. Another try with Hunter's Hawk? Faerie Fire, to make the ugly beast an easier target? Should he move closer and try to use Summon Insects?
The last idea jogs Wes' memory. He had been puzzled by the failure of his Entangle spell...The sheer mass of grasping vegetation always had some effect on whatever it caught. But the monster had walked right through it as if it wasn't there...Just like the hag on the beach had been unaffected by his casting of Insect Swarm. The insects had surrounded her, to be sure, but not actually touched her...Just like the monster here had shrugged off the grasp of the grass and weeds..
Wes decides not to risk throwing away one of his most powerful spells to no effect. Instead, with arrows and bolts whizzing by, Wes tries to illuminate the large ugly beast by outlining it in Faerie Fire.

Bonnie
Things aren't going as planned. I should have recognized that these lizards don't seem particularly competent warriors, the flying terror lizard roosting as protection was a clue. Still, I wouldn't have guessed they had a jungle beast in residence. Bonnie thinks as she tries to salvage the situation.
She winces as the boar manages to get a piece of her, and gasps as the beast rips through part of Cealwyn. As she starts racing around the obelisk to get behind the beast in an attempt to strike a blow, the boar suddenly halts. Having experienced the effects of a hold spell, she whispers a thanks to Wes and turns the corner just as the grey beam of energy hits the beast.
Bonnie watches along in astonished horror as the beast loses half its attack. She quickly looks to the source of the beam and sees Chauncey lining up another blast. Extremely reluctant to interfere with the private time of a mage and his wand, she holds back. If the beast turns to chase Chauncey, she'll strike out at his back.
Long Sword (20) = [1d20+2] = 16+2 = 18, damage SM = [1d8+1] = 1+1 = 2 / L = [1d12+1] = 1+1 = 2 wow. guess her heart really isn't into it.

Cealwyn Blackthorn
The ranger cries out at the sheer impact of the savage blow, then forces the pain to the back of his mind and limps out of reach of the massive beast. He will move west toward the treeline, glancing back repeatedly to dodge or sidestep attacks or pursuers, if necessary. He heads for the treeline or his companions, whichever is closer, looking to gain range and employ his longbow next go-round.
"I'm going to roast your damned pet on a spit tonight, beast!" He growls across the clearing. "He'll taste good while we sing songs of your death."

The Obelisk
Sunday, 21st of Goodmonth
Late Afternoon, Hot, Humid, Buggy
Avaala moves forward and touches the closest slizard on his shoulder. The humanoid turns to look at the mage, but doesn't seem to be bothered by his presence. He continues to chant and bow, despite the craziness scattered all around. "Praise the power. Praise the light", is the only thing the mage can pick out so far from the monsters rambling reverence.
Wes stays put and begins another spell aimed at the huge jungle monster currently ripping apart his friends. His idea to ring the monster in a glowing light also fails once the spell is cast, causing the druid to wonder if the thing is immune or at least resistant to his natural magic in some way.
Luther and Grimm continue firing at the behemoth, the rangers sizzling energy arrow burning a hole in the one armed things bare back, soliciting another wicked howl from the jungle monster.
Trying to escape another blow from the beasts sharp claws, Cealwyn turns to flee, but his horrible wound slows him down too much to escape the ire of the enraged monster. With a massive bite from the things sharp toothed maw, the ranger is chomped upon harshly, bringing him to unconsciousness and leaving him hanging onto life by a mere thread. 8 dam Bonnie rushes up behind the monster, but isnt sure if she should attack or wait for another blast from Chauncey's wand. She is shocked to see Cealwyn fall to the stone dais, now bleeding to death. (I will use the attack you rolled for this round unless you tell me otherwise.) The monster reaches out to the elf next with his one remaining arm.
The groups leader is certain that it is only a matter of time before his new splendid little toy eliminates the beast for good, so he shouts out the command word once again. "One Dress!" But much to his chagrin, instead of a devastating ray of withering, a small stream of butterflies exit the tip of the wand this time, leaving the normally cool headed Chauncey looking rather flummoxed. Seeing Cealwyn fall, and Bonnie now facing the beast all alone, Paul ignores the slizards and charges into the fight, slashing the back leg of the creature with his sword, leaving a minor wound.

Bonnie
Yeah, use that roll to attack last round. It's not like it would've been the killing blow.
Bonnie slashes at the beast, merely tickling it, and unfortunately gets its attention. "Oh, fudge." Chauncey's wand is less effective the second time, which prompts her to call out.
"HOW IS THAT HELPING!?"
I'm assuming that she's still kinda behind the monster right now. Bonnie sees that the situation is getting out of hand and with an attempt to mimic Cealwyn's battle cry, she tries to leap on the missing arm side and back of the monster and grab onto its head. "I'll use your skull as my chamber pot, you oversized kobold!" If possible, she'll use her sword as a bit in the monster's mouth.

Grimm let's a curse come out of his mouth as he sees Cealwyn falling at the beast's hits. He grins, aiming at the monster with his crossbow and fires.

Next time, get yourself a short bow, 1-6 damage and two shots in a round...
