[Open] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
[Open] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
A proposal for another expedition,
Here ye, I hark your courage and ask you to rattle your swords against evil and takes its hidden treasures. In the barren recesses of a desert lies an oasis said to house The Observatory of the Great One. Be it that this Great One has long since past into history and dust, he could not take his minions, books and magical treasures with him.
Thus let us come together as a party and relieve The Great One of his earthly burdens?
OOC: Ok, I'll GM. Tunnels and Trolls 5th edition rules with Talents and Spite Points- Who is in?

Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
Character Creation Campaign number is 864
- Roll three six-sided dice 7 times, add up the scores, drop the lowest, and write them next to the prime attributes you wish. All right here in the forum.
- For now I would like to stick to the basic fantasy trope kin. Human, dwarf, elf etc.
- Please remember ROLL AGAIN ON ALL TRIPLES and they add up.
- 3d6*10 for gold
- Pick one Talent (an ability connected to an attribute that gets a +1d6 added to it.) Rogues get 2!
- Remember: We are playing with spite damage.

Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
I've given this more than one look; so here are the questions that come to mind:
What sort of game do you want to run? There's a "GMs of The Unseen Servant" thread (viewtopic.php?f=21&t=2417) that might give you a good place to talk about your style of running and the types of games you prefer. Most game mechanics are secondary to the DMs style and intent.
Knowing the game type will let folks better consider joining. T&T is on sale for USD 7 on DTRPG, so it's not too much of a stretch. You might also want to talk about why you prefer 5th to later editions.
Some folks like dark and gritty. I'm old enough to have lived through dark times, no desire to game them. I can give my ex-wife a call if I want that sort of pain. I really enjoy light-hearted team games where people work together and you have to make stupid mistakes to die quickly.

Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
I have had enough medical procedures so that I don't play with the gooey (well maybe Ochre Jelly or an occasional Gelatinous Cube). My undead are clean and pristine ala Anne Rice.
I too have many ways of placing misery on myself. None of them involve the games I play. I mean what are games for- misery? Nah!
Not that my adventures are ever in Munchin-land or suffer from the ridiculously benign. Oh yes, do something wrong and my minions will mop the corridors with you.
I adore the party, the company and find that interaction more entertaining than the ticky tack of dice. In pbp even more so.
Let me know if you want to play.

Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
I have the 5th ed PDF downloaded now. Will read up after supper.
First stats: [3d6] = 9 [3d6] = 8 [3d6] = 16
Second stats: [3d6] = 16 [3d6] = 8 [3d6] = 8
Last stat: [3d6] = 9
Gold: [3d6x10] = 12x10 = 120
There was a middle roll that was discarded; it was 2 sets of 3d6 and I just needed the 1.
Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
That's fine. But do the underscore [_3d6] that way if you roll triples you keep going!
Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
I'm not familiar with the "triples" mechanic, can you explain? Of those rolls, though, only the two 9's and the one 12 could be a triple. How would you like me to handle that? Or just re-roll with the "_"?
Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
Yeah with attributes and saving rolls, triples and doubles respectfully roll again and add up until no more said repeats.
So you can either keep what you got or re-roll from scratch.

Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
Well, here's my thinking: I can roll 2 sets of [_3d6] and see if either are doubles. If so, then one or both of the 9's are add-to-able.
[_3d6] = (2+3+3)=8[_3d6] = (4+2+4)=10
So, no luck there. My thoughts on attribute assignments would be: STR: 9, DEX 9, INT 8, CHA 8, LK 16, CON 16. That gives him +4 adds and more hit points to last through a longer fight. He is also pretty good at saving throws, and he'll need it.
With enough cash to by a club and leather armor, he's mildly ready.

In this life, we can only hope to be mildly ready.
Don't forget to sign up for campaign 859.

Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
Okay, Arlen is a human fighter. I don't see "Talents" in the book. Do you have a page number?
I'll get him reassigned to 859.

Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
Talents are in the seventh edition of T&T and I really like them. Simply put pick some thing that you are good at, tied to an attribute. Roll d6 and when you do that talent you get that bonus on your SR.
Some examples:
Physically agile (DEX):
acrobat
dodge
evasion
sleight of hand
lock picking
eagle eye
Physically powerful (STR):
Wrestle
Sword fighting
Door-opening
Bare knuckled fighting
Potion mastery (IQ):
alchemist
poisons

Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
Sounds cool. Do you roll the d6 once, and use the same number every time, or roll each time you use the talent? A 6 would be very useful, a 1 would be, uh, just my luck.
I could see Arlen being the runt of the litter, and not getting much in the way of school (IQ) or attention (CHA). Or protein (STR) or play (DEX). So, he built up his toughness (CON) getting picked on all the time, and he's always been daring enough when Lady Luck shows up. Sort of like Steve Rogers/Captain America.
With talents, and needing to be a warrior, maybe a mercenary spent the winter at the village and told Arlen he had a "natural talent" with swords? Whether or not it was initially true, it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. So Arlen ventures forth to seek his fortune as a bladesman.
How's that?

Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
Pretty damn awesome to start. You will learn more about him as the adventure progresses.
Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
Well, Arlen can afford enough for a basic start. He needs to get a level or two to raise is Str and Dex to use larger weapons. A short sword, sling, leather armor and buckler, and general clothes, etc should be doable.
Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
Now lets get some more trolls on board.
Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
I agree about being old enough to prefer quirky to gritty! Sounds the best way to go. I shall give my dwarf a little leprechaun dna, just to prevent him from being too grim.
Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
Just used the dice roller and got 120 for gold - not bad! More than leather armour and a bludgeon, for sure.
Re: [LFP] Tunnels & Trolls: The Observatory of the Great One
Heavy flail (4+4) for 55 and leather armour for 50, leaving 15. Hmm.. Poniard (2) rather than a buckler for 10, 10 torches and 100' hemp rope for 3, then 2 for bribes - if I can have some rations and a water bottle as inheritance from my recently deceased great-great uncle Chuffer on the maternal side.
