Was hoping to post tonight but it's 2am and I'm with my son in the ER. It might be his appendix. I'll be replying soon!

Hate to hear that but at least it was not something worse (I am sure your son feels it was the worst thing in the world though).

BTW: please excuse my slow posting, in jury duty. Strangely enough I am totally drained at the end of the day even though I just have to see there and listen to the case presentation.

A good idea in theory, but I've never had a donkey last very long in a dungeon delve. Inevitably, you reach a point they can't traverse, so you tie them up. And they get eaten or run off.

Henchmen die, too, but it's usually easier to recover and redistribute their inventory.

I think we actually have a fair amount of starting cash for a first-level party, and most of us have volunteered to put or savings in the kitty for hirelings. So we don't have to scrimp on our party's compliment. I think we need some folks to tote and hold torches, but we should try to get some men-at-arms, and, if possible, a thief for picking locks.

Well I'm not going to buy a mule unless there is an immediate benefit. For example, travel time to the mines is very long when heavily encumbered. Or something like that.

No worries, we're making good progress on the hirelings front, going to interview first candidates soon :)

I wouldn't bother hiring a thief, a 1st level thief is going to fail around 80% of all rolls, except climbing.

I like the wizard :) I kinda imagine he has Saruman's voice (from the movie) when he says "Dhondaruhm".
