Re: IC II
Thaumont 14, AC 1000
The wet combined with the chill mountain air makes for an uncomfortable night, but at least the stalwart adventurers are not molested. The new day dawns promising warmer air and cloudy skies. Off in the distance, perhaps a mile or two off the trail to the west, a tower is visible, clinging to the side of an almost sheer cliff face. Lanny examines it through his spyglass and is unable to discern any sign of life other than a murder of crows perching on the gables and window ledges of the fastness. Indeed, it appears to be in a state of some disrepair.
The adventurers break camp and continue northward, descending in altitude and quickly leaving the treeless peaks behind. Just before midday they arrive in the small community of Jessup, which appears to be slightly larger than Eagle's Nest. A hot meal is obtained at the local inn, The Haggard Wench, and again the companions are aware they are the target of numerous stares and whispered comments.

Lanny the elf
Lanny enters the inn, looks around, and then walks up to the innkeeper behind the bar.
"Greetings, friend! We are just passing through your village, but from my map, I see that your village is situated at a crossroads between a path heading northwest and a path heading east. Tell me, what points of interest lie along these paths? Also, we passed by a tower coming out of the mountains from the south. It looked run down and abandoned... Do you know anything about its history?"
Lanny will pay for his meal with a platinum coin (his only carried treasure) with the hope of getting some useful information from the innkeeper.

Tratiln will stand by the fire for a moment to finish warming himself up from the previous day and night and then sit down for a warm meal. Perhaps, comrades, depending on what Lanny finds out, a quick trip to that tower might yield some interesting information or treasure, if it's abandonded.

Re: IC II
Innkeeper
"I don't have change for that, sir elf, just so's you know that." He serves Lanny a generous portion. "The road north leads to an elfen village, about a day away on horseback. Then I've heard it goes on up into Darokin. Eastern road isn't used much, these days. There's one or two villages that way, and I've heard it told you can get to the Duke's Road that way, but there've been rumors of orcs and the like waylaying travelers. Some old tombs and battlefields can be found out there, though, left over from the old days."
He pauses to make the sign warding off evil. "That tower, now, is cursed! Everyone knows that. It's old -- don't know quite how old -- thirty, forty years ago this wizard moved in, claimed it as his own. Didn't bother nobody, least not at first, then folks started disappearing. Slow-like. One at a time, the old and feeble first. My own grandpa was taken. Then one day it stopped. The mage was never seen again; no one disappeared no more. Who knows what happened! We stay away, though, in case that wizard returns."

Re: IC II
Marodin the Cleric muses on the usefulness of such a tower. "Perhaps if it's empty, we could consider it as a site for our party's stronghold? It might be nice for us to have a homebase to sally forth from. Still, that's a thought for another day. We should hasten to help our elvish friends and then track back to do some exploring at a later date."
Re: IC II
Meagnor the Elf smiles while answering to Tratiln: "I agree. Let us just not talk about this to Quinthos or we will become the ruffians again. Maybe we should cast a spell to make him sleep". While sympathetic to Quinthos quest, Meagnor doesn't forget offenses easily.Bouv wrote:Tratiln will stand by the fire for a moment to finish warming himself up from the previous day and night and then sit down for a warm meal. "I appreciate the information, my friend. I appreciate the food and drink even more! We will be passing through these parts again soon, no doubt. In the meantime, if you hear any interesting tales or meet any interesting characters passing through your village, my companions and I would love to hear about them when we return here... We are always on the lookout for adventure!"
Lanny smiles and nods his head in thanks to the innkeeper, leaving the platinum coin for him on the bar.

Bregalad the elf
Bregalad will try to keep Quinthos' spirits up, during the trek back to his home. "Thank you for sticking with us, Quinthos. This is a brave group that does not shy away from danger. Together with your scouting, we can defeat this monstrous threat."

Saul is feeling much better, for which he thanks Marrodin, and his morale is at an all time high now that he feels he can actually hit the broadside of a barn.
The Tower interests him and he would have agreed with Tratlin if they had the time but when he later hears Lanny drilling the innkeeper he knows he's going there. As soon as everyone gathers around he proposes:
"A wizard throwing curses around, making people disappear and ruining what appears to be a fine piece of the scenery. I think it's our duty that as soon as we deal with the ogre situation we take a look."

Drudsa the dabbler
"Wait a minute Saul, we don't know if it was the wizard who was making people disappear. Specially since he vanished as well. Why are the mages always seen as the bad guys?" he says with a mocking smile on his face
"Now I can see us reclaiming that tower. Drudsa's Spire! Sounds imposing doesn't it?"

"Why! Maybe it's because your lot are always up to no good. I say the reputation is well deserved. And I say this knowing full well you're given to cackling about like a mad man whenever we kill some poor creature and you have a nasty habbit of conversing with demons in your "sleep"."zebediah wrote:Drudsa the dabbler

Saul looks at Lanny seriously for a moment as if expecting a reply but before Lanny can do so he breaks out in laughter.
"Yeah, you are right, nothing really tells us the wizard did it, all we know is he's gone but that some people vanished too and he is, somehow, involved. Hell, maybe he's a victim as well.
That's what we should find out and, if by any chance, there's no way we can find these people in good health and restore them to their families I guess an abandoned fortification is a fine place for a group of adventurers such as ourselves.
We might even get Father Varis to visit and give us his blessing, with any luck and enough booze I'm sure we can get him to help us clean out the cobwebs. Semele, my dear, you didn't hear that last part."
He looks at the young girl with a big goofy grin. He's not really afraid she'll say something to her superiors, just trying to make her feel at home with them.
"And you can keep your tower, I bet those things are windy and when it rains you'll have all sorts of leaks. Nah, I want something in the middle, high enough to have a view, big enough to set up a small workshop for making some traps."

Meagnor the Elf laughs watching the conversation: "Elves will probably only be allowed to make some cabins at the treetops, supposing there are trees. Hopefully I'll be lucky enough to find a nice tree near Thordin's brewery."

Drudsa the dabbler
"The thing colleagues like Bargle miss is a good public relations advisor. You actually get much more out of being helpful to people like we have been trying to do. In the end you have all the perks, a good reputation and you still get to do all the weid arcane stuff in the privacy of your tower or whatever place you set your business on.
As for leaks and general shabbiness, that is standard. You don't want your tower to draw much attention and you don't actually need a very tall one since you can have as many underground levels as you want. But we should leave that to our trip back, once Quinthos is reunited with his darling and his friends."

Re: IC II
The little village of Jessup is soon left behind, and the remainder of the journey goes smoothly, the only occurrence of note happening about half an hour or so before camp is struck. The trail runs beside a babbling brook for some while, and midway down the stream the opposite bank opens up into a sandy beach, perhaps 10' deep and 40' wide. A quartet of giant ferrets, each about three feet long, frolic in the sand, sinuous bodies weaving in and out as they play with what look to be some terrified crayfish -- if crustaceans are capable of such emotions.
A short while later the hills are left behind and the group enters the forest proper. Quinthos urges caution, "We are near enough to my home village. It may be wise to find a defensible spot and set camp for the night." Such a spot is found and camp is set up. Those practicing with spell or with sword do so.
Thaumont 15, AC 1000
Everyone is up early, ready to go. The sky is clear this early, but Quinthos is wary. "The wind is from the east, my friends. This time of year it often means rain will blow in from the waters far to the east." He looks about. "We are perhaps two hours from my village." Squatting on his haunches he draws his dagger and begins to draw in the dirt. "This trail runs through the village proper and continues on to the north, towards Darokin. The foul ogres came from the north as well, establishing themselves in a lair a few miles north of town. When I left they were stationing guards here," he points to a dogleg in the trail just south of the village, "and here." He points to a spot to the north. "The creatures had not yet attempted to assault the town when we left -- my village is poor in magic, but we are all fair archers, men and women alike -- and were attempting a siege of sorts. In addition to the two guard posts there were groups of two or three patrolling the woods at all times."

Tratiln, satisfied that he was able to get Rainbow Attack learned, decides to focus on Leap from Maeva's spellbook next, using two hours during the evening to study by the campfire and "enjoy" his trail rations.
"Quinthos, do you recommend we approach the village warily? Are they expecting you to come back with help? I do not wish to be the targets of the guard's posts archers!
