I really don't understand the rolls in this game. it all seems very complicated.

The rolls seem complicated, but I don't think we need to make individual rolls for combat. I think our noble referee makes those, doesn't he?

Day 1, Afternoon (turn 13.2)

You're absolutely right, my apologies for having a brain skip and forgetting to factor that in. The fiend has Taken That, and Biddle's IQ (18) is added to the rest of the party's hit point total of 37.

That's 55 hits (party) - 24 hits (ghoul) = 31 damage taken to the ghoul, which is enough to destroy it!

Biddle has 6 points of ST depleted from casting the spell, recovering 1 per turn.

Image

The ghoulish gormandizer snaps his jaws like a starving piranha, ignoring blows on all sides as he tackles his prey. "A delicious little person, just like the other delicious little persons! A feast day of succulent, juicy litt—hey, ow—whatchit oof—agh! Gasp! Arrghlrglrlglrgle!" The creature is clubbed to the floor, and even as he reaches out for one last bite Biddle delivers the fatal blow with a sizzling zap to his brain.

The ghoul lies dead (again) on the ground, sprawled before the open secret doorway that leads into the peculiar room of discarded furniture and dead hobbs.

Doughty offers many thanks to the others in the group for jumping to his aid. Then he sees the dead hobbits again and rethanks each member of the party. He gives the toothy ghoul a wide berth, entering the secret room. He says a prayer for his kinsfolk, then searches them for anything valuable or useful.

Biddle will search the bodies and the room - cautiously but methodically.

Digsby shovels the ghoul's body back into the hidden room and off to the side out of the way. With a look of obvious revulsion, he sets the blade of his shovel against the creatures neck and, with a quick hop, drives both booted feet down on the steps to forcibly separate the ghouls cranium from its body. He looks over his shoulder at his compatriots, "Sorry but it was dead once and came back. Didn't want a repeat performance." With a deep breath and a hint of hesitation, Digsby kneels down alongside the slowly leaking corpse and rifles the body for anything the ghoul felt valuable enough to keep on its personage.

Once he's completed the less-than-desirable deed, Digsby turns to help his companions search the ghoul's lair. "Do the victims have anything identifying them? Signet rings, paper's patent? I'm sure their families back home would like to know of their loved ones valiant battle with evil."

"Thank you, Digsby. Nasty work but you took it on bravely. We are in your debt, sir! If there be any means of finding out who our predecessors were, we shall ferret it out. When I say "predecessors", I must hope there are no listening ears that take me at my literal word!'

Day 1, Afternoon (turn 14)

Image

The group moves into the room. The stench of day-old carcass fills the air.

A sickening crunch echoes off the ceiling as Digsby decapitates the ghoul, followed by the hollow sound of its head rolling across the room. He holds his breath while palming the corpse, and finds nothing on its wasted body but crumbs of food no doubt stored for later consumption.

You recognize these hobbits. You'd recognize their deeply sun-soaked faces anywhere. You met them carousing the docks of Antharia before your journey out here. They had hired onto another expeditionary merchant ship that left for the Eastlands a few weeks before yours, and had even bragged their way into a few bar fights before they left. You seem to recall that two of them were brothers, and one was named Volpits.

Biddle Spratt examines the bodies and finds their leather armor chewed up and destroyed. The ghoul did not bother to remove their weapon belts, which carry small swords. Aside from a mere six gold coins, a coil of string, and two-and-a-half letters of hire from the H.B.M.S. Racketeer. One of them has a pouch on him containing a single scroll of Little Feets, smudged with so much blood and fat that a 3rd-level saving roll would be required to read it.

The room is L-shaped, 30' to each side as it hugs the corridor. It is absolutely littered with discarded furniture, some in good repair and others mere piles of wood. Many of them are covered in white sheets to protect them from dust and cobwebs, both of which cover the room. Through the maze of furniture you can see a small corridor exiting out of the south wall.

Weeba will step forward and start pulling sheets off of furniture. It would be good to know what else is in the room.

He does so with his left hand; his right still holds his sword.

Doughty takes a few steps back from Biddle. It might seem like months so now, but it was just the other day that the old mage set the attic in fire and left Doughty to die. He searches the room for more secret passages, as well as the trigger for the wall the ghoul came through.

Digsby wipes his hands on a spare piece of mostly clean sheet then claims one of the short swords along with the belt and scabbard, "I don't think you'll need this any longer," he says to the fallen hobbit. "If events get dicey I'll appreciate your gift." With that, he wipes the gear down as well as he can and belts it about his waist. Thus accoutred, Digsby joins Doughty in his investigation of the rest of the room. "The fiend may have only been interested in a meal but who knows what else may have been tossed aside?"

Day 1, Afternoon (turn 15)

Image

The party begins to search through the room, the sounds of their rummaging echoing uncomfortably down the open corridor to the south…

Biddle gathers up his findings from the pockets of the dead hobbs (Please add to PC sheet: smudged scroll of Little Feets (SR3 to read), 3 letters hire from HBMS Rackeeter (one damaged), 6gp, string.)

Digsby retrieves a short sword from one of the fallen adventurers (3+0 weapon, please add to PC sheet), and then he and Doughty begin a search of the walls. They quickly locate the hidden panel to control the secret door: pulling the lever, the stones magically ooze back into place, and another pull oozes them back out to allow access into the corridor. They drag furniture away from the walls and examine elsewhere, but no other secret passages are found.

Weeba examines the furniture more closely, revealing a couple of impresive pieces of furniture amid the trash: a very fancy ottoman laced with gold thread, and a large silver mirror attached to an otherwise destroyed dressing table. The rest is just junk.

Biddle uses spare time to work on deciphering the spell scroll more easily. in the hope that this study will pay dividends when its time comes. (Can he tell if it's a one-use scroll?)
He also takes a few tentative steps into the corridor, checking it too very carefully, ready to run back to his comrades at a hint of danger.

Say, is this by any chance the kind of Ottoman where the top is on a hinge and lifts up, and you can store stuff inside it? Weeba will check.

Day 1, Afternoon (turn 16)

Image

Biddle Spratt pores over the bloodied scroll studiously, scraping off bits of dried blood with his fingernail. It's too stained to make it any easier to read, but it looks like this particular scroll can be used twice before it disappears!

Weeba Zorts recalls the hollow ottomans on his family's country estate back home, and plays around with the seat's cushion. He removes it easily, revealing two small sacks inside, one with 25 gold coins and another with moldy tobacco.

The flame of Biddle's torch begins to sputter. It will go out in about ten minutes.

Amid the shuffling and searching, the party can occasionally hear the sound of rats scurrying through the hallway to the south.

Doughty moves over to Weeba and pats him on the back. Good thinking! Should we bother pulling the gold threads from the furniture? Or just take the fabric? That gold'll be worth something to someone, for certain. Doughty uses the furniture-covering cloths to cover the goblins and the decapitated halflings. Then pauses. Wait. Isn't there something about people coming back to life if their killed by the undead? Not wanting to decapitate halflings, he suggests burning the corpses. Any place around here a good spot? He looks for a fireplace.

Digsby follows the movements of his companions as they search the room. As they uncover furniture, the silver mirror catches his attention. Wondering if it would be something worth carrying, he sidles through the furniture thicket to take a closer look. Doughty's question about the dead coming back pulls the sappers attention away from the mirror, "I can't say if it works that way. I just didn't want to take a chance with the ghoul itself. As for their disposition, well, there's enough old furniture in here to make a funeral pyre."

Day 1, Afternoon (turn 17, evening will commence in 2 turns)

Image

Digsby eyes up the silver mirror. It sits on a set of heavy hinges, allowing it to be tilted to and fro. It's clearly worth money, but heavy: he estimates a combined Strength of at least 25 would be required to carry it safely.

A funeral pyre is constructed for the hobbits out of bits and pieces, and since Biddle's own torch is now sputtering out, the hypnotist ceremoniously tosses it onto the pyre. Slowly the bodies are engulfed in flame. Heavy smoke rises up to the ceiling, where it slides along the stone and out the southern passageway and northern secret exit. The whole image is quite poignant and tender.

While the party decides what to do about the ottoman and silver mirror, Biddle explores a bit to the south, following a streak of blood that leads into around a left turn and into into a shared bedroom of sorts. The door is burst open, loose on in its hinges, as is another door across the way. The blood streak leads up to one of six beds lined up around the room; on the walls are a few dusty and moth-worn portraits showing a long dynasty of dour and haughty butlers. He can still hear the scurrying of rats beyond, past the room. He returns to the others.
