Sorry, busy weekend and then had a heckuva migraine yesterday. Not my favorite reason for spending most of the day in bed...

So for Malone, the first thing to note is that he needs to get to 2,001 XP to hit 2nd level (yep, the actual charts in the PHB make you get one XP over the mark, believe it or not).

Going from 1st to 2nd level, the main benefit for Malone is going to be hit points gained. Secondary benefit will be when fighting known creatures of less than one hit die (essentially, any fight against a creature previously encountered where the creature has less than 8 HP will grant Malone an extra attack per round at 2nd level, 2 extra attacks at 3rd, and so on). No change to THAC0 or saves.

Onlyme, I assume that you're contemplating whether or not to take a rest in order to gain the level sooner than later, but it looks like you're still a few XP shy even after the battle with Krell...?

oh sorry. I thought this game was based on OSRIC, ( though with 100s of houserules from Vargr...) OSRIC leveled at 1900 instead of 2000.
Will look for another bunny or two to swat.

You know, it is OSRIC, but I often look at the original books out of habit and because I know where stuff is there, and I didn't realize that OSRIC gave such different numbers for XP. So, I guess I need to contemplate this in more detail and get back to you. My bad! :o

No worries. I think it flips with the next level, if I recall correctly. I guess the OSRIC folks were trying to level the classes by "correcting" the requirement in their minds.

Oops. I've been looking at the 1e books, too. I figured it was the same for XP.

Been super busy, but I should be back to checking in more than once a week now...

On the sheet Thurinor's XP for next level was 1e, so I assumed that was the rules along with house rules.

If it is OSRIC, it's 2,400 not 2,501, in which case Thurinor made 2nd.

So I'll await rags' Solomanic wisdom on the matter. If most of us were operating by 1e I'm fine with staying consistent with that.

Ok, so I have no idea why they changed up XP in OSRIC. Maybe they needed to do that to keep enough of the rules different and avoid copyright issues? Makes me nervous that all kinds of other things are different and I just didn't realize. I dunno, but since it looks like more than half of us had been using the standard 1e advancement tables, and since on a glance it's actually HARDER for fighters to get to 3rd level in OSRIC, we'll go with standard 1e XP. That means Malone and Fairfax and any other fighters need 2,001 XP for 2nd level, but only 4,000 at 3rd. I can post the full table if anyone needs it in the future (for fighters or any other classes).

So I guess I'm coming down on the side that 1e is the King James bible but you can all look at those fancy new translations like OSRIC for most stuff since it's "easier"... (yep, used to be a church boy)

Soloma... what? How do you spell that again? 8-)

Solomonic wisdom :) as in King Solomon, 1 Kings 3:16-28, and his novel solution to determine the true mother of a stolen child.

Oh I know that one, Grog. And all his wisdom went wasted on a harem full of "strange" women from other lands... ;)

In another setting and life situation, Solomon might be Cugel the clever! :o

Happy birthday rag. Thurinor took the bag along. Who would like the bag and magic rope?

Thanks, Grog. Good bday. Got some of the new dnd minis from the wife and kids. Random pack with a stone giant, a gargoyle, a doppleganger, and a gargoyle.

I figured Thurinor probably would have picked up the bag, but I like to know where these things are, just in case... ;)

I'll wait another day or so before updating. Friday at the latest...

Wait... it's just the cloak, the ring and the rope that were magical, right? Was the bag magical? Bag of holding-ish-ly magical?

Sorry guys, had a run-in with a dryer, had to swap out a motor (with trips to the laundromat while we waited for the part to come). Lame, huh?

Nice pumpkin carving, Grog! That sure beats my efforts. Hope you all had a scary halloween.

As to magic items, you're almost on track, Chubby: no magic ring, but a magic crystal; and yes, the sack is magical too. No one has really played around with the sack yet, though you could maybe guess its nature from what you've seen of it so far.

Malone calls back,

Yes. It has been some time now. Guards will come looking. We need to exit...

Oh I can't take credit for that neat pumpkin, it was a photo someone sent me. My carving is very level one :)
